What is the fastest way to level up? Ive been playing for awhile but so far im only a LC, it just seems to take forever! And why do the escorts suck so much? I made the mistake of picking one as my first ship and I regret it.
Escorts are great, but you need to equip them with the best weapons available at your level. I just hit Commander with my Tactical Captain. He had no trouble with Lt.Cm missions.
I would often take out two of three Birds of Prey before they got anywhere near me. Basically, I would slow to 1/4 Impulse and just open up on the first one that was in range. A lot of the time, they would never turn and would try to take me head on. Big mistake. Just when I think their facing shields are almost down, I fire off a High Yield Torpedo and as it's enroute, switch to the next target (using my shield boosting abilities are needed).
It's probably not the best strategy for later on, but it works at Lt. Cm quite well. You just have to have good weapons and some weapon boosting consoles. Also, make sure your skill points are spent on your Energy Weapons.
As far as leveling faster, the Explore X Cluster missions seem to be the way to go. You'll get XP a lot faster by going to the highest level one you have a mission for and just repeating it over and over and over and... yea.
Personally, the only time I did that was when I wanted to "power" through Commander on my Engineer/Crusier Captain because I really wanted a Galaxy Class ship. I just LOVE the Galaxy Class and I got impatient. lol Didn't help that I don't care for the four nacelles of the T3 ships... I could have maybe lived with it if I could have had a "true" Stargazer, but... yea.

Escorts don't suck, you just need to know how to use it
The fastest way to level is by doing your lowest level story and patrol mission then do a explore and/or defend the sector block mission. If you are LC 3 then do your LC story and patrol mission followed by one or two explore/defend missions to bring you to the next level. Never do a story or patrol mission that is for a higher level than what you are. You will just end up having to grind at some point.
I remember...back in the day...... When everyone complained about leveling 2 quickly!
"...Geez ma... how fast the kid has grown ...."
I'm new to the game. Been here two weeks? Three, perhaps? Anyway, it does seem that we level too fast to me. I really don't want to hit Admiral! lol
I ran through Commander just because I really wanted "my" ship! My baby! My Galaxy! And well... I did really want the rank of Captain, too.
I know it's probably silly, but the rank of Captain should be special. I don't want to fly around the galaxy as an Admiral... it just seems odd to me. Captain Picard, Captain Kirk, Captain Archer... ext.
When Kirk was Admiral Kirk, he was stuck at a desk. If it wasn't doing an inspection of the Enterprise at the beginning of TMP, Spock would have been the Captain, not Kirk.
So yea, I want Captain to last as long as possible and be a Captain doing what a Captain should be doing! I don't want to be an Admiral pretending to be a Captain. lol
I'm sure this has been brought up before, though. But as a noob, I wanted to say it. :P

I'm new too. Owned it for two days played it for 2 hours.
It does seem ridiculous to be an Admiral doing the things we do. And sooner or later there's going to be thousands of admirals. That doesnt make any sense.
It would be like a Star Wars game populated by thousands of Jedi. After a certain point it will get pretty stupid.
If a player wants to be an admiral then by all means be an admiral but limit their play to admiral play. Like diplomacy and sitting in an office.
I am in a similar boat if you get my drift. Currently at LC 5 nearly 6 and I have just completed the story mission where you have to lay the self replicating mines around the transwarp hub.
Not sure where to go from here, I like doing the starbase 24 space battle mission, but it doesn't seem to get many points mainly because its a low level mision.
I am thinking of doing the save the deferi (I may have spelt that wrong lol) mission, but will it lead onto better ones?
Not too interested in PvP at the moment, though I love the team missions like the starbase 24 mission.
Just open your mission log, and start running the lower rank missions and move your way up. Before the featured episodes, there was enough content on the Fed side to level completely up to Admiral level by just doing the patrols, and the story missions, with a few exploration and DSE instances thrown in.
Now there are extra missions from the 2, soon to be 3 featured episodes, plus daily repeatables from each series. PvP is fun though, and a good source of extra experience. Once you get to admiral levels, the daily PvP missions give marks and emblems for some of the best gear in the game. If you wait to start PvP until the admiral level, you will be far behind in skill to people that have been competitively playing PvP for a long time.

Actually I have a Tact and she has flown nothing but escorts and I have only played for about 1 month now. I tried a cruiser on my engineer and got bored and hate the turn rate. I can turn a semi-truck in a circle faster then you can turn a cruiser.
Escorts are fast and highly maneuverable with tons of dps. Simple tactic I use is constantly move in and out and change facing shield while hittling them with everything you have constantly, keep using your specials when they refresh, if your a tactical officer they you get some great abilities you should be able to take on NPCs that are 2-3 levels above you with no problem what so ever.

There have been two featured episode series added since Season 2 (July 2010): the Breen and Devidians. The next one starts Saturday, January 29 (featuring the Romulans). Doing the aid the Deferi mission will open up the 5-episode (repeatable) Breen series to you (requirement is Lt 10) and you can already play the Devidian series (requirement is Lt 6).
It's been told to me the second Devidian series, "Spin the Wheel" can be done very, very quickly and can be replayed every 30 minutes. If that's not a super fast way to level up, nothing is.

If you level a character up by doing one mission over and over agian, will you run into an issue where you will miss some missions becuase youa re now a much higher level than the game intendted?
For instance, lets say I go ffrom Commander to Captain rank without doing anything but pvp and repeatable mission. Will I still be able to gather the quests that are available to commanders later in the game? Or will they not show up on the mission screen?

Make sure your power levels are set correctly - 100 weapons power in an escort should melt things pretty quick.

You won't miss any missions. They will still be available. In fact, even once you do the missions, you can go into your Ship's Interior, into your Captain's Ready Room, and access the computer on your desk. You can Replay all those old missions again (some with new rewards, even!).
When I first got to End Game (back when it was Rear Admiral 5), I hadn't yet completed about half the missions and I was able to do them then. No problem.
The only downside to having "saved" missions is that most of the regular PvE story missions are level locked. Meaning the opponents will be many levels below you and you'll mow through them with no challenge. It'll help to do them on Elite, but still easy. Worth doing though because of the cool stories, but less interesting because so easy.
The Featured Episodes PhyrexianHero mentioned above do scale with you. So those will match your level whenever you take them. I believe the eventual plan is to make all the missions scalable, but that will be a while.
2 command an escort is fun!! You will understand after youve blown your first ship in pvp with an escort and full emblem cannon support...
Do always the highest rank missions first coz highest xp...
And about becoming an admiral..Yeah will look little stupid with a thousand admirals but on the other hand its war against the klingons and wasnt war always the chance for fast promotions? Dunno, what about us navy ranks? guess they have hundreds of ranks??? Maybe cryptic should have a look into it??
1. Ignore the multi-system patrol missions if this is an alt and you have the money to buy max level stuff for your toon or are willing to do exploration cluster grinds for badges. The time and the reward is almost never worth it, those are easily the lowest xp per hour imo.
2. Do the "Patrol the X Sector Block" missions often - you used to be able to hop instances and rack these up very quickly but I think there's been some nerfing on that front because I didn't seem to be able to do this last time I tried.
3. Mission Replay is your friend. The most "low work" missions from the Featured Episodes are Spin the Wheel, Cold Comfort, and Everything Old Is New. Skirmish also isn't too bad and you get the Subspace Field Modulator for all of your ships. Rotate among these for your 30 minute timer if you can stand to do them this much, but 2-3 rounds of these should be enough to level.

PatricianVetinari brings up a good point. While you can level up quickly repeating the featured episode content and you won't miss any episodes, the regular missions are on a fixed level. So if you do eventually do them you'll be 10,20,30,40 levels above the enemies and it won't seem very fun. If this is your 5th alt you may not care, but if it's your primary character I recommend you take your time, enjoy the stories and the ships, get a feel for the environment. You have a *very* long time to be maxed out, so you should at least take your time once.
Yes, shields are not a priority on escorts. If you want shields, be a cruiser or sci vessel....You are there to kill, kill, kill!
