Beams look washed out since 2.0 and I also am having problems with some planets and asteroids being blindingly bright to the point that it hurts my eyes.
I have this same graphical problem. There's also issues with blinding bloom from things that shouldn't have it, like asteroids. It doesn't seem to be an issue with particular graphic cards, either.
As I mentioned elsewhere, I have to turn bloom quality to 'low' otherwise any bright lights producing bloom will shine through me, my ship, floors, walls.... anything.
S2 definitely messed up something....
(Card = NVIDIA 9800 GT, problem was definitely not there before 2.0)
Yeah, just got a DX11 card, GTX 470, right before 2.0 patch, man was everything even more extra shinny. Tetryon beams were absolutely beautiful. Emergency power to shields was almost blinding. I definately noticed how much better everything looked from my GTX 280 DX10, after patch, not so much. As previously stated, all phasers are washed out, but yet some planets and ship hull reflections are simply blinding. Don't know what happened, but i hope they fix it. Hope some Devs notice.:(
I am seeing the over-bright bloom on inappropriate objects as well, asteroids, planets, even my own ship.
In the new Fluidic Space fleet action, my own ship bloomed so much that I had to reduce the bloom slider to 0 in order to even see.
That instance was bugged as well, in that the enemy ships never appeared to defend the NPCs from, so all in all a less than positive experience with season 2 thus far.
I doubt this is a driver issue, since people with both ATI and Nvidia cards across a wide range of hardware and drivers are all experiencing the same issues.
I believe it may have something to do with the new bloom slider,
At any rate, both bloom and contrast are all over the place after season 2, and there have been many recent threads concerning each.
Nothing overclocked and still having bloom problems. It's so strange since bloom works for everything else but the beams...which are my favorite part ;_;
Well another patch has come and gone, and still no fix for the missing beam bloom.
Is this being addressed any time soon?
It is fairly disappointing to finally have all these nice new graphical updates on the iconic ships which CapnLogan worked so hard on, only to have the space combat look like TRIBBLE because of washed out beams.
I'm also seeing the dulled phaser beams in 2.0 with a Nvidia 9800GTX+ and 197.xx drivers. Are we supposed to stick bug threads in the gameplay bugs forum rather than here?
Upgraded my drivers to Cata 10.7. Did the whole patch thing this morning. Jumped into a DSE.
And beams still look horrid. Has any Dev said anything on this issue? There are a wide range of PC set ups with this problem. So I'm very curious to what exactly is causing this. Its a serious bummer since everything, I mean everything looks great... then you fire a shot, or take a hit and it's just... looks like something out of Quake.
No, not Quake III...Quake. The original. DOS game. Make a long time ago. -_-;
Haven't seen anything like that ever (my PC specs in sig.) during closed beta, open beta, or live release; but I will say that the Bloom has been all over the place; some stuff is often blindingly bright with bloom at 100, while other stuff seems low. I canl say that I too have noticed beam weapons across the board have way less brightness/bloom than before; and while I don't feel they look all that bad; they (imo) don't look as vibrant or colorful as they did pre Season 2.0.

I recently managed to fix my bloom issues by disabling AA in-game and instead forcing AA with my graphics card.
same thing here. i have no bloom on beam space weapons since 2.0. what's the deal? I am using Nvidia Geforce GTX 285M and drive version 188.33 and eveything rand great before 2.0.
I tried turning off AA, but that did not effect bloom for me.
I also get too much bloom on background gases in space that make it hard too see other ships.
Well... I am still getting this bug. Not only is the bloom on beams missing but all weapon effects are bloomless now. No settings change this in the slightest way. I really wish the devs would at less address this...

May be related to specific graphic cards.
I'm using a GTS 250.
ATI Radeon 5850; driver version: 8.741.0.0
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Something was definitely changed in Season 2, and it may have to do with the new Bloom slider.
Warp flash bloom is missing as well.
nVidia 9800 GT is what I have.

windows vista 64bit. see dxdiag: www.deadlyshoe.com/dxdiag.txt
The Nvidia 197 drivers still HAVE bloom and run very flawless with STO.
Nvidia 256+ drivers still have some odd issues in STO. At least for me.
While I did not have the bloom issue, a buddy of mine said as he went back to 197, his "laser bloom" suddenly re-appeared.
Maybe it will for you, too. You could give it a try.
Edit: Maybe I was not mistaken as I found my backgrounds to be "less colorful" with 258 drivers...
I'm still running the 197 drivers,so that can't be it.

I wish they would just put it back like it was until they can find a working new system.
I miss the old bloom.... now I have to run with it on super low quality
ATI HD 5770
Intel i5 750

very immersion breaking

It also makes shadows behave better.

Before Season 2.0 they looked like this:
Beam Effect 1
And after Season 2.0 went onto Tribble/Holodeck:
Beam Effect 2 & Beam Effect 3
