Look, we need too be able to control the layout. Assign which button does what.
The twist action on the ground should not be used for camera control but so we a change the direction our guy is moving. The Throttle doesn't even work.
What I would suggest is not to map the joystick control to the Xbox controller. That was a big mistake. If anything only give us basic joystick setup. The Axis, Twist, and Throttle properly setup and do not assign any buttons. Let the joystick vendor software take care of that. Please remember the Twist is for turning on the ground and for pitch/rolling in space/air.
Please hire someone with actual joystick programming experience. Please don't just try to figure it out.
I'm afraid I am also disappointed that I can't determine what buttons control myself. Also my throttle control appears to be useless. (Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.)
Very few games seem to have good joystick layouts by default, and alot of the time you get stuck with senseless layouts due to the default keyboard configuration or UI design.
They are more expensive, but I generally recommend the Saitek controllers, mostly cause they all have a programmable interface that allows us ( the players ) to completely bypass default control mapping.
Having said that, I still was extremely disappointed with the default joystick config, especially the lack of throttle controls.
Of course the entire physics of this game are more like a manta ray swimming through water then like a starship moving through space. So it's not really surprising that the default mapping for the control sticks doesn't lineup with any flight sim/game released.
Still, I'm really tired of games using the default FPS keyboard layouts for content like this. In theory this is a 3D enviroment, yet the game play and key layout is the same the orginal doom game.
Course, what do you expect when the core game engine is the old COH engine mod'd for star trek and not something fitting what a space based exploration game ( of nearly any genre ) should be designed around.
yes, this is as much rant as complaint on the joystick layouts. I expected alot higher quality product for a star trek franchised game and am extremely disappointed in those regards. Gameplay is ok, but considering the root engine, space combat is extremely dull and not at all realistic.
Joystick control is woeful and the worst implementation of a joystick in a game I have witnessed to date.
Joystick is for space and retain mouse control on the ground...
It so nice to give us Joystick control over the ship...but then they put camera controls on an axis...actually on sperate axis! What the hell were they thinking? Who uses an axis for view control? Come guys, you are supposed to tie views to the POV/hat switch...have you guys ever played anything than Mario Bros?
Those of us who wanted joystick controls, want them so we can emulate flight sims/dog-fighting games...in those genres, you always, always use POV/hat switches for views...geesh!
I havent checked to see if the keymaper allows me to set skill hotbar buttons to my joysticks keys...if I cant do that, then this release of Joystick control is about as climatic as Phyllis Diller popping out of a cake! Yay:mad:
Let's hope this was just the start of implementation. Basic steering control with chase camera is a step in the right direction, but......
Things I find missing:
1. support for multiple devices -- stick, throttle, peddals are often detected by Windows as seperate game controllers. STO appears to see only one (and if more than one are connected it horks as they conflict).
2. better assignment descriptions (binding a joystick axis to some obsure controller fucntion means nothing to me)
3. a throttle system -- it doesn't need to be full analog, it could be simply incremental
4. movement feels a bit squirrelly (especially in an escort). It could use some sensitivity sliders.
5. needs hat switch view imlementation (joysticks are "hands on throttle and stiick" not "hands on mouse and stick")
The trouble is the exact same problems exist for the 360 controller option. only one stick works, and half the buttons. This issue has in fact existed since launch, and surprised many of us as CO has full 360 controller support.
Basically, someone didn't know what they were doing when they tried to hook it up.
Get someone else in there to properly hook up the 360 and HOTAS controls.
Well on my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick button 2 controls A3 in the system tray, button 4 controls A2 and button 12 controls the camera zoom. None of the other buttons seem to have a logical function, save the triiger that I can use to press the respawn button.

I find it amazing that the players of the game can come up with a decent control scheme for the game but the Devs cant im going back to my old set up that worked just about but it was still playable.
ok so a thought why dont we have 2 set ups one for space one for ground that would make life so much easier
I have Track IR3...it comes with a mouse emulator in the install folder that runs as a secondary program(it requires that the main Track IR application be running first).
For later model Track IRs, I believe you have to go to the NaturalPoint website and download it seperatly.
Ive been using it for my mouse look...its not bad, though I'd like to get a Track IR5 to get better fidelity. As of now, its tough to use with BoP, but much easier with my Carrier.

I have this exact problem. I tried to use my joystick (oddly enough I have the same one) and it was very difficult to play with it. The throttle was of course a big issue there, but I agree, the joystick control needs some work before i'd consider using it.
So I am to assume that even with x-box control there is still no way to get this game to operate in that fashion proprerly? So for this question but have only been playing for a week or so and want to know so I don't waste anymore money on a game only keyboard controlled when it states in set up about rumble controlled devices.

I also have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick
You want these guys improving joystick function, not Googling "Phyllis Diller."
Still it was a blast from the past.
Cryptic - Please fix the joystick, my Father's Day present is currently useless.:(
