Just giving some feedback being new to STO as well as asking for others opinions on this topic.
Patches/Updates-
I made the plunge the other day and purchased STO, created an account, installed STO only to be greeted by uber massive patches, I've been patching STO more than I have been playing it!
Sure, bugs and fixes need to be made, but c'mon could we at least have optional updates, not massive patches that take all night to download from servers that need some 'speed' issues looked at.
It's beginning to become a royal pain in my *cough*
Sorry but it´s the same thing with any MMO. Downloadable clients may get updated from time to time, install discs obviously are not. I know it´s horrible to wait while being anxious to play, but at least you´ll only have to do it once. Your timing is also wonderful since season 2 launches today, another big patch.
part of mmo live are frequent patches, samll ones regualiry to fix bugs etc and some bigger ones at larger intervals with added content. Just sit trough it once and you are done (and back up the bloody files if you reinstal your pc)
As has been said, things get patchy for a while when new content is released. In spite of testing, something always comes up and new patches/updates need to be done. I remember feeling the same way when I played my first MMO (and I was on dial up at the time so that really ... was awesome). That being said, they are absolutely necessary and while I'd prefer to see some of the larger patches broken up (little fixes here and there to broken mechanics that don't need to be held onto for months - like the C:SV "fix") the game will run better and be more exciting if they keep it loaded up with what we want.
I know it's obnoxious but it's for the greater good! lol
Seasons are really the only large patches you have to worry about, and there's only been two thus far (including today). Other patches are much smaller, including the incremental ones like Season 1.1, 1.2.
You think you had it bad on my first day I downloaded the demo from the STO site. Now you would yeah so thats the demo no their demo is the whole game with only the first part unlocked to play. it was downloading all night long then when I got up in the morning I ran the installer and was all set to play when there was a large patch that needed to be installed which took an hour to download I so ticked I almost said forget this. but I stuck with it and Im glad I did.
You bought the game and it had to patch up for all the prior patches added to the game.
Then today is a huge patch as well for 2.0. So your patching experience is worse than most due tyo your just joining, where others have had the patches spread out.
You should see quite a drop in the patch frequency for you after todays.

Thoughts?
Patches pain? Yes, BUT
They bring improvements AND more fun stuff, so it hurts gooooooood
What I am looking for is a way to manually download the patches. I have my home PC and my laptop. I wont be playing on them both at the same time, but I do want to use the faster internet connection that my home PC has rather than the 3G speeds I am getting out of my Sprint Evo wifi hot spot my phone provides. I was downloading yesterday on my Evo and the STO client crashed and I lost 1.9gigs of my 2.4gig download and had to start again.
A tons patches are normal for an MMO after it has been out a while. The golden rule is never to buy the MMO tell it is a year old. This one is a big step in the right direction.

Edit: Oops, and welcome to the game.
I just hope there isn't to many more 'large' patches in the mix..
Thanks for the warm welcome, I'll be spending more and more time on the forums if these patches keep coming

Patches are good.
They day they say there won't be any more patches is the day we're in trouble.
