How big is the Season 2 download??>!!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
how big is it?? Ive found nowhere online that says, no one in game can answer, and your "search" feature is useless (keeps saying "you have less than 2 terms" even when i have a full sentence).

I am on limited bandwidth and need to know HOW BIG IS THIS THING???

Thanks

I've had some big patches. the last build was 800 MB, and I had two or three patches that were over a gig. so it is big.

If you have recently played on Holodeck - then the total download is about 2gigs total. More if you haven't played in a long time.

course if you played on tribble over the weekend it appears the whole path will be copied from your tribble folder, least thats what just happened with me, I didn't download a single kb.

Holodeck is the name for the live play server, Tribble is the name for the test server.

It means they've been patching in parts of it behind the scenes. So if you have played recently, you already have part of the download. If not, you'll have to download more.

I think he means if you have not played in a while and downloaded all the patches in between release and 2.0 which would make the download bigger than 2 gigs

i've been playing on tribble doing various testing etc, so have done a number of downloads in relation to that (last update was over the weekend)......however after i've been logged into holodeck and exit its relaunching trying to download the 2.4gb patch.

should i allow this patch to download?

because i'd have thought i should already have the patch contents?

I asked coderanger about this earlier and the reply was that if you played on Tribble over the weekend - the pre-patch is in fact going to use most of the files you had already downloaded from Tribble into your playtest folder. When you are "dloading the prepatch" it may be in fact processing all the information from your playtest folder to get it ready for the Holodeck release.

Still not sure if that is what is going on in your computer though...

i'm letting the relaunch patch download/verify now and its seems to be doing what you've said.

My question isn't how big, but when. I need to know when to take a break from Starcraft 2 to play a little STO. Would hate to quite SC 2 to play STO season 2 (weird, both 2s) only to find out I can't :(.

Why, oh great cryptic people, why did you have to go and make the release the same day as StarCraft 2? :D

So I have something to do tomorrow, as I could not possibly care less about Starcraft.

The patcher tries as hard as it can to not download data. If it finds a file it needs in the Tribble folder it will just do a local copy (thats how the prepatch works too, its just another data folder to copy from once the patch goes live). The total transfer between the current Holodeck build and the one going live tomorrow AM is just over 1900MB I think. If you download the prepatch now you should have little or no actual transfer once season 2 hits Holodeck, and ditto if you already have the season 2 files from playing on Tribble.

Took like a minute to pre-patch when I logged off just a little while ago. I've been testing on Tribble a lot lately. It went really fast through the patching process.

So here's one post confirming that it's working the way Coderanger describes for some people.

I´ll back that up, real download was about 10 mb i guess. :)

Yeah, it worked as intended for me as well, coderanger. That's an additional benefit to helping test on Tribble, I think. I have a slow DSL connection (best I can really get, though, because I live out in the sticks), and I like the fact that my pre-patches for Holodeck go super quick because it pulls from the Tribble copy.

(I still have to wait agonizing long times when I download the Tribble updates, but at least I don't have to wait that long when the update makes it to the live server. :) )

I too have been on Tribble a bit over the past week, so any pre-patching that was going on tonight was not even noticed on my end during login earlier.

That said, I do not know when the pre-patch went into effect, but there were already posts up about it when I logged in early this AM.

i have been playing tribble and then tried the prepatch. it appeared to copy over everything as i did not have to download anything and the thing patched in less than 5 minutes

:D That quote's going into my STO Bio Fodder file.

(Yes, I have a Bio Fodder file. :p Started one for Eve, and I've made one for STO now as well. It's just an way for me to keep cool quotes in one place, really.)

okay so... for the player that doesn't have Tribble, how big is the seaon 2 patch gonna be? I have all other files to play the "live" version of the game. How big should i anticipate that the patch will be??

As stated earlier in the thread, it is around 2GB, apparently just over 1900MB.

Also, what is all this pre-patching people are talking about?

    I can't be 100% sure, but I'd say about 2gb or so.

If you load the live (Holodeck) game, and exit, then the launcher will try to download the pre-patch if you don't have a Tribble copy, or it will copy the files over from Tribble (and maybe a bit more) if you do.

(Sorry about the double post, folks!)

    Ooooh, ok, thanks!

Will the game be playable after the pre-patch?

Define "playable". You can play it, to be sure. But it won't have S2 activated. It'll be just like not habing the pre-patch until tomorrow morning, when S2 goes live.

Yes, sorry I should have been a bit clearer.

What I meant was, does it 'half patch' the game, thus making it unplayable untill the final patch is released, or does it copy the pre-patch to a different folder, thus allowing normal game operation. (Can't be too sure with cryptic)

But you have answerred my question. Thanks.

Yeah, like Aris said. You'll simply have a jump on having to download the patch tomorrow after they turn Season 2 on. That way, you shouldn't have to download much (if anything) once it does go live.
