Ok it has been said that many player would like to see more exploration and discovery within the game. That being said, here's my thoughts:
A) You beam down, and get a message that says "Tricoders do not seem to function here". This means that you're totally in the dark as to the location of your objectives, but while you're out and about discovering the locations of your primary objectives, you find a cave with a lot of anamaly deposits... or a big ugly beast that scares the TRIBBLE out of you with a hideous roar when appearing suddenly behind you. They could also have a vacant starship wreck that you find and explore for loot and better weapons, technology's (yellow consols) and such.
All this from actually having to explore a planet instead of the "V" button, turn and "Shift" to sprint to the next little scan... boring for the explorers at heart!
I'd also like to actually DISCOVER new places, places that aren't mapped, but I can return to later after I've discovered their location. Currently, what we have are missions that pop up all over, and we grind through them. There's no discovery there taking place at all. In order to do this well, Criptic would have to recreate the current exploration systems to include an atmosphere of vastness where you could actually feel as though you are lost.
Anyhow, make these new locations the basis for newer Diplomatic Missions where Starfleet actually wants to show their kinder side to the planet and its people/beings. I know it would be asking a lot here also, but what about discovering active cities, markets, social hubs, and newer species??? All by DISCOVERING a new location. All these locations should have their own feel to them, according to the species occupying the planets, and there should be at least one for each rank... at least.
C) The ability to gain ship parts in this game has been made too easy, just by banging out three missions a day in B'Tran. There's no feel for unlocking and discovering new technologies. A 'discovery' system mixed with diplomacy would aid this a hundred fold! (Examples: finding a wreck with better technologies while leading an away team on a planet mission, or finding a space wreck that you board to find no life signs, but some cool loot, etc.).
D) Once you have this system set in place, then I believe we are ready for a great crafting system. Until then, it'll just feel like we've not accomplished anything at all because it's all too easy to get right now, and nothing really unlocks or is discovered. These look like some really good ideas for an explorer concept.
Some Suggestions for sleight Modification to Desired Procedures:
A. If you could find a Star Ship Wreck, and get the Goodies, they should only be available to one Character on your Account. Players should not be able to take advantage of Weapons or other goodies they have found as an EXPLOIT of the game. Going back to get the same things time after time would be unfair to everyone else just because one player found them first.
B. looks good as is, but do not open possible Exploits similar to A.
C. Again looks good, but hold takes to one per Account Holder.
I remember in Beta when they did not have a tricorder and you were "in the dark." It was a long, boring, plodding experience that was almost universally hated. That said, I'm all for adding random objects or missions to maps to reward those who take the time to travel off the beaten path.

A. Yes, I agree, it should not be an item that they can keep farming. Furthermore, the item or new technology to unlock would be as random and/or as 'one-time only' as a mission or a patrol.
B. Thanks for the complements.
C. Unlocks would be stupid if they unlocked for all characters. These items or technologies are either a) randomly generated in Exploration missions as "Bind on Equips b) entirely "Bind on Pickup" if in actual missions or patrols, or c) Unlockable Technologies that unlock certain items that they'll be able to craft (with reference to a futuristic in-game crafting system.
Thanks for your feedback. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who wants more explorable immersion in this game!
