Just got done from a one-explore-mission-long session of STO on tribble to check out the new scanning mini-game/mechanic/thing. What would have been a brain suckingly boring click five undergound consoles mission was actually quite fun because of the wandering around space and ground and the little bit of excitement that I only had five seconds to match the waveforms. Really it was a good thing.
So I want to know what you guys think, if you've tried it or not do you think diversity in the gameplay and little extras like a crafting mini-game where you make your weapon/armour better for 15 minutes is fun, or just an annoying distraction that you feel you'll always have to do? Because I can definitly see myself in a month going "GAH! I hate this stupid matching waveform stuff! I feel like I have to do it every single time and it's just annoying!". Even though right now I'm REALLY loving it.
eventually, the mini games will get old. Hopefully, if they keep coming out with new ones, they can randomize them a bit.
crafting to improve your weapon a bit, almost as good as getting the next class of weapon. Maybe instead of a temporary boost, a way to craft the in game bomuses onto the weapon itself, instad of always finding/buying a new weapon and discarding the old. Maybe we can put a weapons locker on the ship to store all the old weapons?! nah. that'd be too much.

I've tried it. It's not bad. I sometimes skip it if I'm really focused on doing something else. (A lot of times I want to get the anomaly off the board so my scanner can point me better at what I'm really there for and when I'm rushing around on a mission like that I'll skip it). It's a nice little boost. I sometimes feel I'm not getting anything out of the experience. Like earlier today I "won" the mini-game and got a single technical schematic. Just one. I didn't feel like I got anything "extra" out of that, lol.
I am not a fan of temp buffs. I think it plays to the bad side of my fear of OCD. Like I'd have to have a way to keep a temp buff up as often as possible or feel like I fail. So for me as a gamer, the idea of mini-games to activate temp buffs ... probably not something I myself would want. But others mileage obviously varies.
In short ... mini-games are cool. As long as people don't expect too much out of them, they're fine.
