It basically gives you a Saucer 'Pet' with 1 or 2 phasers, you keep your normal weapons, but the power levels are different, the stardrive section gets +10 to weapons and -5 to everything else. The stardrive section also gets a speed and agility boost and is reduced to 100 crew; basically you get a pseudo-escort and a saucer.
I've seen the saucer section do "Emergency Power to Shields" but I dunno if it's because I have it, or whether all saucers have it.
Sometimes it get's stuck, or just ignores you until you re-integrate, which is a tad annoying; but hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Your saucer gets 2 phaser beam arrays (maybe more, but I only see two firing simultaneously), and is capable of using Emergency Power to Shields, Engineering Team, and Science Team. It may have more abilities, but again, I have only seen mine spontaneously perform these three abilities.
The greatest advantages it provides would be the vastly increased maneuverability you get (flying the stardrive section, as always), increased weapon power, and another target to draw some of the enemy fire from you. It is great for taking on the flagship group in deep space encounters, as well as dealing with Breen frigates; send the saucer in first, and they will all target it with their tractor beams, leaving you free to move about.
Also, you can command the saucer, in a limited sense; if you select an enemy target, it will attack that target. If you select the saucer, it will stop where it is. If you have absolutely nothing selected, it will follow you around. It also seems to have a sense of self-preservation as well, as it will try to get away from exploding ships, and use its abilities in an attempt to keep itself alive.
Yeah, the seperation of a saucer in TOS involved detonating explosive charges at the point of connection between the saucer and the neck, and required a Spacedock to reattach the saucer to the stardrive.
(Information is contained in the "Ships of the Line" coffee table book, which shows a TOS Saucer Seperation)

... pared down post...
Overall, lots of fun, and VERY cool to watch.
actually, your saucer does not have those abilities, you do. When you are seeing your saucer using them, it's because you are casting them onto the saucer.
Saucer Separation
Separates the saucer of your ship. Non-essential personnel are evacuated to the saucer section, leaving the Stardrive with minimal crewman. However, relieved of her bulk, the Exploration Cruiser's Stardrive section becomes a formidable attack vessel, comparable to any Escort. Power systems are diverted to weapons, and speed and maneuverability are greatly increased, though hull and shield JP are slightly reduced. The saucer will follow you, and will attack your target, but the saucer section is not built for combat. If it take heavy damage, it will be disabled, and you need to disengage "Saucer Separation" and re-dock with the saucer to get it functional again.

As a Galaxy Retrofit captain as myself I must say it's both look nice and works fine.
I use saucer sep quite often, especially if I need to get the enemy down faster or I for some reason get lots to fight with at the same time.
The Saucer part deliver quite nice damage, not nearly equal to you, but still good.
It also makes you able to move easier, more like an escort
When using Saucer Sep you'll get +10 in weapon damage and +10 turn rate, but as an above speaker said, you'll loose crew, hull, shield, auxillary power etc..
But still.. I have used the Galaxy Retrofit for quite some time now and it's not a ship I plan to exchange or get rid off, I'm happy with it.

However it couldn't re-integrate, and the Constitution stardrive would be useless without the saucer as it has no impulse engines.
This was also (originally) going to be used in the pilot for Star Trek Phase II (Which became The Motion Picture with script changes)
