Launcher stuck on connecting to update

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I can't get past the launcher window: connecting to update launcher. The launcer window never appears after over 50 attempts to connect. When i try to run the "Gameclient.exe" directly it tells me that the connection time's out with the log in server. Other on line games I have are connecting fine back to the states (like WoW). Internet is up and opperational and the game is allow and was working fine till this morning? The server status on the STO websites claims it's up also??? Any Ideas???

check that your firewall/antivirus have not reflaged the programs as requiring authorization.
make sure IE browser is not set to work offline or had its internet options communications lan settings set to use a proxy.

do a tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com and a nettest and post the results

    Nettest:
    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download this file and run it
A command prompt should appear running the test automatically

For good connections, column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate). If the values in these columns is less than what is expected you may have filtering or blocked ports either on your personal network or from your ISP.

the game uses ports 7000-7500 and full range needs to be unblocked or unfiltered.

7255 is used by the patcher,

I've had this happen on occasion myself, but found that if I just closed and opened the launcher a few times it would start working as normal.

BLUF, ping to 208.95.185.41 times out. Trace Route times out after about the 13th hop at IP 216.55.4.18.
    the four prevous hops are:

    207.88.12.57
    207.88.12.21
    216.156.0.30
216.156.1.13 all of these are around 260-350 ms.

The nettest program stops after the pinging the server at (250ms.) and screen hangs at "port 80:"

New symptom, when i hook my PC directly to my cable modem, it works. When I go through my Linksys router, it won't ping the patch server. I tried manualy inputing the the port range you suggested and even tried running the router in gaming mode to free up all port requests. still no ping? let alone trace route. Does an external IP have to be assinged for the game to work? What other settings on my router could affect this issue? And since the program you suggested stops at port 80, what does that have to do with anything?

certain router and 2 wire modems can not handle the number of connections the game makes you may need to upgrade the router or sometime a power cycle of it helps. you can also try using the proxies in the launcher option it may help.

This strongly suggests that your router is just plain dead. This sort of thing does happen to commercial networking equipment on an annoyingly regular basis - the stop passing certain traffic for no conceivable reason (and eventually stop passing any traffic at all).

Try swapping it out for another one and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have a dead router.
