Why Can't my Ship Do Front or Back Flips?

    why can we turn on a dime but not be able to go up or down at ALL...when something is directly above me or below me I have to do these sloppy spirals to get anywhere near them and takes forever...why cant I just point my ship down and go that way.

    Because they are already annoyed enough not to have to search or maybe are not a forum regular.

    Many Captains use this flaw to hide from cambat, firing at you from the top of the "Box" so you have to spiral up to get them.

    Sounds like a strategic use of the environment to limit an opponents tactics to me. If it was not this within these limitations it would be something else.

    Use the search function to find the answer to why. It is there.

    i actually was thinking the physics engine just couldnt handel a fully 3d space enviornment..... because X3 and that whole series did it very well.... but i was hoping for more of a stimulus that encouraged the devs to make more effort towards that because yes the advantage is way to clear for the klingons and sneeking up from above....

    Well duh, because if the captain pulled the ship straight up everyone would slip off their feet and fall down towards the back of the ship. ;)

    Think of the mess it would make if the ship actually rolled over on its back.

    I started the following thread on the 28th of April, this year and it contains a poll regarding the Starship Movement System in STO.

    POLL: Starship Movement System.

    Most importantly, it contains quotes from dstahl which will provide you with all of the info you need and all you have to do is read post number two.

    To front/back flip your ship needs to be trained in the ability to barrel roll first, which opens up at Galactic Emperor Lower Half 4.

    tl'dr version

    The devs hold us in such low regard that they think we can't handle a third dimension.
