If there is one game that I want to succeed it would be this one. it is the only Star Trek MMO, and since I started playing my first MMO years ago the one franchise that I wanted to see as an MMO was Star Trek. Now that we have it I have another underlining fear.
The game was rushed, maybe due to the deadlines, or some other reason, but the fact is the game has some major problems. be it the low amounts of content for the klingons, the non combat missions for the federation, or the lack if depth the game play. granted I understand that fixing problems for a game do take a lot of time. It is hard to write stories, or implement non combat game play in to a genre that is normally full of combat. But what I know doesn't keep people from quitting, and every subscription we lose is less money for the game.
When I see quotes like these,
For your employees sake I hope that STO continues to pull in money, unfortunately I can't justify giving you anymore of mine. Cheers!
I'm about at the same point due to the frustration of the current state of the Klingon faction. If I decide to leave, I won't look back.
Part of my hope for this game succeeding dies, and there are many more quotes like these on these forums.
None of us can't say cryptic is not working on the game, but at the same time is it becoming a case of to little to late for some players, and if we lose them will they come back if it is fixed. personally I feel that I will be here until the end, be it good or bad, but I have to be honest If the game fails chances are I would quit MMOs as a whole.
But it doesn't matter what my opinion. what matters is your opinion.
So If you are feeling like quitting, or you have had the thought cross your mind please answer me these questions.
due to the fact that it takes time to make content what would cryptic have to do to keep you here until that content is finished?
If you can't wait, and you end up quitting would you come back if they fixed the problem that made you quit?
please adds your thoughts, ideas, concerns, and feedback.

If they get two full working sides, and get some type of pvp going that the pvp minority will buy into, and to where were getting those weekly episodes we were promised then word of mouth may swing it back upwards. Some of what Ive seen in season 2.0 is a good start (start being the keyword there) but its a good step forward toward having a complete game.
And yeah, I've gone back to games after leaving. I beta'd LOTRO, got bored, left, and now I've got a lifetime
I know a huge fleet that wount come back they where all klingons they arent never coming back spoke to their leader a few days ago.
I myself will not do much in the game other then my dailys and when i find another game i find more intresting im outta here to , will prolly only play when something major happens like a new faction etc... i got a lifetime in CO as well i havent played that for months .
Every MMO is shaky it's first year.
My problem is I strongly dislike Cryptic or it's various money-grubbing and/or outright lieing behavior. That's what's killed this game for me.
Unfortunately there is nothing that will keep me here that has been mentioned so far..
This time tomorrow my subscription will be ended, and I've told me myself that I'll peek my head around the door again in maybe 6 months. It's not a single problem, it is the overall game layout. There is never anything new to see or do on the path to end game. Classes are identical, missions are clones of each other to the point of irrelevant quest text, and as it stands right now, pvp is all but dead.
Despite the initial customisation of character, there is no pursuit of uniqueness, and no need for any kind of optimisation. Add to that the lack of any real relevance to the IP, and I can only quit and hope for more in the future.
Summers, wow's servers may have been shaky in the first few months, but when they were up, you had a plethora of different paths and races to try that all had singular experiences. STO is 1 for all.
edit- I should add that we'll probably see Cataclysm and then TOR in the time period I set for another look at STO, so it's just as likely the boat will have sailed on this anyway.
Well make sure you do check us out again.
It's not even like Cryptic can't do it, when I first saw MC in Champs it was great. Towering buildings, deep flavourful districts, fantastic. And everyone you talked to could be like "oh cool, a new mission in that crazy zombie haunted place". everything was a bit too true to comics for me but it was still great, actually I'm thinking of going back for a bit.
In STO people barely remember P'Jem and if ou mention any other place like the korvat system theywont remember at all. Which is a huge shame because some of those place were really cool. I would have loved three more missions on that planet with the massive Forrest. Why are the trees so big? What is that blue stuff in the ravines? In games like CO and WoW there'd be a mission or two explaining each of those, and you could always go back. In STO we get one mission to see the pretty sights and interesting ideas and then no depth whatsoever.
I can tell you all about how felwood has been demon corrupted by former servents of archimond and all about how they poisoned the water and corrupted the elementals, but I have no clue why the skies of planet Mesea or whatever are choked with ash. And before I can even speculate I'm gone, never to return.
Actually, I should say that it's a matter of when I leave. Thus far, I haven't seen anything to suggest that the major inherent flaws in this game will be corrected. But to be fair, I acknowledge that the inherent flaws CAN'T be corrected. To correct the flaws would require an almost totally new game, created from scratch. To retro-fix STO to the point where it should be, would cost almost as much, if not more, than it cost to develop STO in it's current state.
I share your saddness Zodi. But, it's hard to let go of Star Trek. But I assure you, when the time comes that enough is enough, I will let go. For good.
Until then, I'll keep fightin the good fight in hopes that they might be able to turn this thing around somehow, some way.
I WILL NOT LEAVE!!
(feedback as he puts bullhorn down)
In my experience all MMO's start this way, I won't be concerned until 1 year has gone by.
I would just like to second this fact... I know ST:O isn't WoW... and it shouldn't be... but WoW is by far the most successful MMORPG around and I just wanna remind everyone how it used to be.
In the first year WoW was released they had a lvl cap of 60
Most missions comprised of:
Go Kill X number of X beasts
Go Kill this named guy and take his loot
Take this item and goto these 5 points and click on it
There were 5man missions all the way up but when you hit lvl cap there were only 2 raids (Zul Gurub 20man and Molten Core 40man) and getting 40 people together unless you were in a super organized guild was tough
There were NO BATTLEGROUNDS WHATSOEVER (people forget that was an addition much later in the game) so PvP pretty much sucked.
Flight points were not connected. Taking a trip from Ironforge to Booty Bay sucked! You had to sit at your computer and take one flight point at a time until you dismounted then click to go onto the next one. So getting around the world could take FOREVER!
Server stability was HORRIBLE. I can't even begin to count the number of times I'd get kicked off mid combat or just wouldn't be able to login at all for hours on end.
All I'm sayin is that WoW is an MMO MONSTER and look at it's flawed past. This game ain't doin so bad
By the time ZG opened, Blackwing Lair was already around IIRC.
The first two raids were Molten Core and Onyxia. Both 40man. Both requiring quest chains from 5-mans to access.
So in other words the game launched with two complete factions. Good for Blizzard Bad for STO.
Ahh true true... I stand corrected
Remembering that they had a 4-5 year development time behind them. No MMO launch is ever perfect, some are just less....bad then others. I was willing to stick with other for the first year or so so I see nothing different with STO.
But you also forgot in your wow run down:
A starting area for each race (minus a couple)
Community centres, ie Ogrimmar, Undercity, SW, Ironforge which were also quest hubs.
Class specific quests (though since dropped)
Faction exclusive story arcs
A full on crafting system of multiple types
Don't get me wrong, the cons you posted were also there, and glaring, but don't take away from what wow did have.
Some would also say that BGs were the death of open pvp, something that's perhaps the case in STO, which doesn't even have open pvp in the first place.
But....this is not a wow vs. STO thread. I find STO shallow and that's what I feel needs to change to make me resubscribe.
Guild wars. In fact, I do not remember an instance of unscheduled down time with that game.
Ah I believe you have me there I never really paid attention to GW so I am unaware of any issues it has ever had.
Hmmmm... you quoted my post and then went on to say something that has no relevence to it whatsoever.
Instead of nitpicking take my post for what it is... a reminder that no MMOs are perfect first year in.
You say "they had two complete factions"... great... as I mentioned before they also didn't have any organized PvP... whereas ST:O does.
But, as Syrinx previously said, this isn't a WoW vs ST:O thread.
I just hope that people can be patient... we're just 6months into the game right now. And, yes, it was rushed due to deadlines put in place beyond Cryptic's control. I think this game will be truly great at around the 1 year mark. With Season 2 and Season 3 coming up in the next few months I have high hopes.
Good things come to those who wait
A: First off, let me clarify. I am a begrudged lifer that wanted out of this game at the 28-29 day mark ( I'll explain why here in a sec), and was refused a refund. So with that, I have had a hate/love relationship with Cryptic ever since. I love the game and especially think it is one of the most beautiful MMO's ever made. I also am a Trek lover ( I'm NOT into canon, I just being Trekky ... there's a difference ).
The first month was great ! I had lots to do, great beautiful scenery and fun ships to fly main story line moissions were cool... but then it was all over... hey, I'm RA5..... after only a month? weird... there's not much to do now...this is EXACTLY like CO ! ( is what I flashed back to). Maybe the lifetime wasn't so good of an idea after all (hence the bad feeling of getting the refund refused). I would have walked away forever at that point without a glance back...ever ... I saw the content run out on two consecutive MMO's in the first month..... that just is awful.
So now resigned to the fact that I am here for life, I might as well make the best of it..... I quit for about 3 or 4 months (minus the random forum checkins to see what was happening).... I didnt play, I didnt care... I had a LOT to do with other games for my "electronic gaming hobby".
I came back a couple months ago, started another character, been playing for a little while now again and loving the game again for the most part.... still see some of the same bugs, some new cool things here and there.... and as of my posting here now, that second character is already RA3... Ive been doing single missions or two only each sitting pretty much, then do something else (playing VERY casual this time around).....been playing a lot of fun other games too... not focused soley on STO at all.
I still think my characters leveled way way too fast .... without having the feeling of the character "coming to life" ore "really accomplishing something epic" so to speak.... I dont have that "connection" with STO characters that I do with other games. Maybe that's the problem?
But, with my "second coming" to the game, I DO have a more positive outlook, and am feeling like I am less confrontational/knee-jerk than I was the first round..... Im trying to be constructive for the most part.....
but
lately I have found myself on the forums alot...... and thats a red flag moment for me..... If I'm here...something is not right. And it isnt. I may speak for myself here, but, I dont feel the fans/players are being treated as well as they should ( I'll leave it at that... there are enough threads to explain that )
So to answer your question. I say "Yes and No".
I wont totally leave, because I have a lifetime...I can go away, and come back, if I so choose... which may happen again soon if Season 2 isnt the hype expected. But... I will not support this gaming company anymore with my business. I will NOT even look at this third MMO they are working on..... never again.
CO was bad #1 for me, STO is becoming #2 if things dont change.
There are way too many GOOD .... Reeeally Good games to choose from out there..... if STO gets off of my "interested" list.... I wont ever look back.... it's riding on my love for Star Trek only ATM....
Season 2 is your Battle of Little BigHorn so to speak (what side will you be on?)...... I'm gonna start a new Captain..... and take a look. Gonna make a Klingon again too and try it.
If I feel the game has grown enough in six months to gain my confidence again... If I see that it has a chance... good for them. I am proud... I am excited... I will be a happy gamer. I can have Star-trekkin-across-the-universe-geek-fests anytime I want. I will stick by, and be constructive as I can, and patient, to help build the STOP legacy.
If not...I'm now at the *meh stage.....I'm over being really really ****ed....been ****ed alot here...because I love Star Trek.....not because I love you Cryptic...... and if not.... good luck with what ever you guys are doing...see ya. I can find plenty to do elsewhere.....
I'd probably go see if I can love the Star Wars universe as much as I do Star Trek..... which I'd rather not TBH.
sorry for the long winded post
The reason was if i would pay monthly... i probably would have quit or paused at some point in the first year and would miss out on the progression of the game... which is something i realy wanted to see, for good or for worse... and THEN decide if it is worth a Lifetime account for me or not.
I like to see the diffrent developments and all...
but i think...
if i would quit at some point, i would never come back because the impression of a bad game that you had rage-quited sticks in your head and stays there!
I tried X3 a few times and i ran into the same showstopper inside the tutorial every time...
i feel no need to ever go back and try that game again.
And hell there are so much games out there and allways new ones getting released, if i move on i'm gone for good, MMO or not.
At best i would come back for one month to play through the few new Episode Missions and pause again for another 6 Months.
For STO there is no possible way to see what has changed for yourself if you dont pay again.
So how would i know what changed and if i even like those changes?
By some engineering report that says "Ship Interrior" ? ... That can turn out good or bad or horrible, i wouldn't know without actually seeing it.
Also i would get pretty ****ed if there is more then $50 Stuff on the C-Store that i dont have after pausing for a few months, so that is not helping either to get new players excited or old players to considder coming back.
Things like the Galaxy-X for 2000 points are a bright red warning sign for me in any game!
If i pay FULL PRICE for the Box i expect to get the FULL GAME.
This might sound strange for some marketing suits and pencil pushers but that is how i feel...
if i pay full price for half a game i feel just as cheated as a Dev who sees his game popping up in Bit Torrent a week before the official Releasedate!
So if you want to cheat me then i have no bad feeling about cheating you.
Luckily for STO it is an MMO and can not be pirated or Cryptic would live in a world of pain by now.
But it keeps players away if they see an allready expensive DLC-Store.
heh.. I know it's long...
jsut trying to answer the questions honestly and show my position clearly.... and hopefully it can help in some way.
I guess we'll just have to see now
:rolleyes::cool:;)
Name another MMO that lauched with an incomplete faction?
DDO only had a single faction... it's actually still doin fairly well (allbeit on F2P)
Cryptic said right from the beginning that the Klingon faction wouldn't be on par with the Federation. No one's forcing you to play them yet... at least there IS a second faction...
LOL the circular arguement continues....
