I'm still spamming it. The one that balances requires me to press it every like 3 seconds. The others I spam when I need to.
Lots of spam. Like when I continually pressed space to fire but you fixed that.
Fix this. Let us right click a facing to turn on auto-regen for that facing. Of course if all 4 are on auto it'll be less effective but if only 1 or 2 are it'll be fine. Basically just like it is now but... auto.
The right clicking would be done on the part of the UI with the pic of our ship and shield facings. No need to use new buttons that take up space.
if they put everything on automatic why play the game... Why not just use auto-resolve like many 4x game...
At this rate, there will be "auto-instancing." Just enter an instance and the game will play it out by itself and upon the completion of the instance, you get credit for that specific missions.
Because not clicking the same button every second makes this game auto-resolve. If I could auto shield gen I could leave my computer for a day and come back and be the max level. :P
Anyways you'd still have to click stuff. Basically only the right click. The more you have on auto the less effective. You'll still switch which shield is regening all the time. You just won't SPAM it as much.

The spam is 100% unnecessary.
Putting my jokes aside, I agree with the OP. I feel like playing STO shortened the durability of my mouse and Belkin n52te keyboard from 3 years to possibly 6 months. I think right clicking is an ingenious idea.

The Thing is a Starship is run with upto 1,000 Crew, however there is only one of us in command... and we often have a dozen things to do at once, where as a Bridge Crew of about atleast 6 Crew would have their own Assigned stations on the Bridge and would have some of the dutys that we alone control...
Fire Control is atleast one thing we dont have to worry about as much any more, as we can put as many weapons as we want on Auto Fire..
Shields is something that needs this sort of attention aswell, not all of us are able to afford very expensive computer equipment just so these Roles are made easier to control....
So therefore Shields needs some sort of Auto Fire controls, I think there should be 5 automatic shield controls, Starboard Bow Quarter, Starboard Aft Quarter, Port Bow Quarter and Port Aft Quarter, so atleast 2 shields on each quarter would be allowed to have Automatic Control to equalize and the last Automatic Control for Shields would be to allow all shields to equalize...
This would help towards automation of the Ship as if a number of Crew are in control in some way... Still wouldnt be as efficient as a crew member would be there to control the Shield to adjust them to certain circumstances but would still help so we can do other things in the meantime and can momentarily forget about atleast 1 more sub-system....
Being that half the feds I meet in pvp still don't know how to balance their shields -let alone actually spam the ability while being focused on- I vote no on auto-balance.

I have also noticed this... and many do not understand how to control their shields and as I said before they have a dozen other things to worry about let alone Shield Controls... Most Feds I attack die with in seconds due to the player not looking after their Shields...
'Waaaah waaaaah game is going to automatic waaaaaaah'
There is still plenty of manual input required controling your powers, flying your ship and generally using your brain pan to pick fights properly but oh no... suddenly having one less button to push every 3 seconds means STO is ruined...
Heaven forbid the game experience be streamlined so that it isnt just a constant clickfest and involve a LITTLE more time to actually ENJOYING the game.
This is the exact same BS people claimed would happen when full weapon autofire was added... the game is going just fine and I see no reason for further improvements in reducing tedious micro-management.
If you want a game that does micro-managing go play an RTS.
"STO a x4 game ?"
"STO is going to get an Auto-resolve ?"
Could you sould anymore like children with the hissy fit over-reacting and hyperbole ?
As a Fed only escort pilot who does not PvP, I'm gonna say not signed. Its not hard at all to keep an eye on your shields while fighting. This sounds more like someone with an attention span problem wanting an "I WIN" button.

How the hell is this an 'I WIN' button ?
Somehow balancing your shields magically makes you awesome and allows you to kill legions of enemies... because... because...
Rather than clicking the button every 3 seconds you can instead focus on managing the rest of your ship functions.
This is the exact same attitude hyperbole employed by folks saying ANY autofire would lead to an 'IWIN' button.
Shame on you for being so shallow in your arguments.

There's nothing magic about it. Its all about choosing the right abilities. No amount of automatic sheild regen is going to fix lack of skill. Distribute Shield Power is only going to go so far and auto-firing it isn't going to change that.
Would you like to QQ again or are you going to respond in a mature and calm manner?

The thing is your claim has no basis in fact. It would do nothing but make the game more enjoyable. It might make n00bs a bit more effective but for me I already constantly do the shield thing. I'd like to give my finger a break... really, it's ridiculous. So is this idea about it somehow unbalancing the game to the level of "I WIN" buttons everywhere is pretty crazy.
It's like the autofire argument. Putting autofire in made the constant and unnecessary pressing of the space button go away. I went from pressing it 100% of the time during place to now just once when I want to iniciate an attack. I do everything the same. I just have a less sore thumb.
The same goes for this. Autoshields would save my clicking finger. Little would change anywhere else.
You'd still have to manually change what shields are on auto and which aren't. You'd still need to manage your shields effectively. You just wouldn't have to CLICK over and over and over.
You have no argument besides a crazy notion which also happens to be wildly incorrect.

Somehow clicking a button every 3 seconds = choosing the right ability ?
Although again, the 'ability' would simply be choosing WHICH shield facing to autofire. Right-Shield automatically reinforces without having to click that button every 3 seconds.
What the hell is the big deal ?
Automatic shield regen ?
Somehow people that are able to press a button every 3 seconds have 'skills'.
Somehow asking for the ability to AUTOMATE shield reinforcement = Compensating for lack of 'skills'
Oh noez... such an epic dynamic of being able to press a button every 3 seconds has been robbed from the game. Clearly these people asking for this ability are just unskilled fools who want to get an 'IWIN' button that increases their shield regen to 'GOD MODE'.
It's not like multiple options exist to nullify shields. Oh wait...
Its like firepower in this game is at such a level shields are invincible. Oh wait...
THINK of all those people with skills that have trained for weeks to click so well
What will all the people with these awesome clicking skills do ?
How about choosing which shield to click on, going back to clicking powers and spend less time micro-managing something that is just tedious ?
Or just simply benefiting from the fact they dont have to keep clicking the same button every 3 seconds ?
The exact same situation that auto-fire for weapons was introduce for in which the exact same BS excuses your using were brought out.
If I roll my eyes anymore at how insipidly incorrect and blatant BS this is my eyes will fall out.
As a Tac/Cruiser captain, I support the OP. I can eat a fair amount of damage, but being able to assign a shield quadrant or two to push would make my life a lot easier, since I also have to worry about holding aggro so those Escorts don't die in large scale PvE battles. I have a pallet of powers to make surviving my job easier, not having to spam a button for my shields when RSP and EPS are recharging would mean I can pay a bit more attention to the actual fight.
I agree that some sort of automatic shield management is needed - afterall, in the series, the tactical officer would allways be modifying the shield settings to give a constant shield around the ship.
Wel seeing this is a casual game I can agree on this though it will make pvp a bit less challenging, but I also agree because I find the interface for this whole shield balancing unclear often I have clue if it does waht I want it to or not and when you press balcne to 1 facing and than to all it only balances to 3 skipping the one you had selected before.
That is odd, I have my shield reinforcements on auto fire occasionally. I just say "Reinforce Front Shield" to Game Commander 2 and it is on unit I say "Front Shield to normal".
BTW anyone has a better command to stop the reinforcing? "Shield to normal" just doesn't feel right.

Maybe "Reset shield Grid" ? or "Reset forward shield harmonics"
I fail to understand how a large majority of people could ask for auto-fire to weapons without much resistance....
But when a shield 'auto-fire' is mentioned everyone balks at it like its ceding control to sky-net or something.
If ever there was a starship system that needed an auto-ability it was shields.
As it is right now its a question of "What shield facing or facings would you like to divert minimal power to for half a second doing you absolutely no good."
It should rather be a question of "Which shield facing do you want to continually re-route power to, if any, or would you like to set shields to always balance, or would you rather do it one off as now, or just not at all"
Its still a question of strategy, it still requires you to monitor and react to whats happening to your shields, it just lets you only have to alter the setting every so often rather than click it every 5 seconds.
