In last weeks MMO Report from G4TV about half way through here is the link.
http://g4tv.com/videos/47453/The-MMO

They reported how Cryptic is entertaining the idea of goin FTP with STO.

Looks like us lifers wasted our money! Why would Cryptic do this? I can only speculate the true reasons, but I must say I am very upset that Cryptic would charge 300 bucks for lifetime sub and the game at launch just to goto FTP just a few months in.

I'm appauled, dismayed, angry, and upset that this is happening. I believe I wasted my money on this game with my lifetime sub and my C-Store purchases just to have this happen.

What a betrayal!

WOW way to freak out over old news. Dstahl said he likes the model, he did not say we were going to it.
calm yourself down, and take off the tinfoil hat.

even if that was not case the case I laugh at the fact that he doesn't even understand the Hybrid free to play model they would go with.

So I will explain it to you.

in the DDO / LOTRO model there are thee levels of being subbed.
Free: only access to so much of the game, and you would have the option to buy stuff from the C-store.

Subscribed: you pay 15 dollars a month, and get access to all of the content.plus you get points each month for fluff from the C-store. ( because you have all of the content )

LifeTime: you get access to all of the content for life. plus you get points each month for fluff from the C-store.

see even if we went that way it would not be so bad. you money would not be wasted. So calm down.

Wow, this misinformation won't go away will it. XD I know how difficult it is to dispell a rumour, I've had to do so myself about an Ace Attorney rumour on the fansite I moderate at, but I wish Cryptic had sprung into action a tad quicker.

The report is only a week old. This may be Old news to you but in my working life campared to your free time, I just found out. And being angry about it is justified in my book.

So your oppinion on my reaction is niether wanted or justified. If you have an oppinion on the matter you may post it.

But your oppinion on my reaction or statement on the matter is not.

STO in my eyes is heading to FTP very quickly and will be FTP before anyone knows it and sooner than most think. In my opinion.

A report that you, in general terms, have wrongly assumed to threaten your lifetime status. Which makes your anger a little superfluous.

they were taking it out of context. So are you. it is best to track down the source first before posting it.

You haven't researched this enough and have reached the wrong conclusions based on faulty premises

Try looking up the background of dstahl quote where he said they'd be monitoring (but not necessarily adopting a F2P Hybrid model like DDO).

You don't even know what model they're considering or the fact that they're not even considering it yet.

    Do your research.

Also, if they went with the DDO/LOTRO model. you'd get MORE as lifer than you do now.

Oh look, another person who doesnt understand what their talking about. Here is a copy/paste from another post:
The DDO model still has a monthly sub you can pay that grants you access to all content, it simply gives you the option to buy the game in pieces as well. However, for those who plan to pay a monthly sub(like your already doing) absolutely nothing will change. And if you have bought a LT sub, then that will mean you get access to all content for life without having to pay a monthly sub...just like right now. Basically, if STO adopts that model than NOTHING changes for the current customers, unless they decide they would rather buy the game in pieces than pay the monthly sub. The people who are "opposed" to STO adopting the DDO model really have no idea what their even talking about because they dont understand it also includes a monthly sub.

They cant survive for long on just the subs , there isnt enough, after there 'experiments' with C-Store i think its safe to say FTP isnt far off.

Who knows what will happen , but cryptic have shown us theyd do anything and make any decisions no matter how the playerbase felt as long as they make the money to survive.

    Only time will tell.

Hey I had the same ignorant outlook on that model. a good thing about ignorance is the fact that you can learn from it.

I did too. I also liked my Lebowski avatar.

    However, it's Baumer time. :D

Anyways, the devs aren't considering F2P for the foreseeable future. OP, you can rest assured.

Also, the only model mentioned is the DDO/LOTRO Hybrid. Their lifetime subscribers have access to all content. F2P users have to pay to play the content.

With as much as they're putting on the C-Store you're assuming that they won't just keep the current 'Sub + C-Store Goodies' setup?

As long as they can support their game, keep an income and attarct lots of new players (and I get some kind of benefit for lifetimer) bring F2P on! If F2P is unsustainable and its their one last hurra to get some cash from the c-store and run the game into the ground then please, continue on as we are.

I see a cease and desist also in the not so distant future.

Any chance you can sticky this information? Possibly with the full-context of dstahl's quote.

People are getting worked up over a theoretical model that isn't being considered.

to bad I like that model. It would bring in more people, and we would still have subs.

Yeah, but if he wrote that STO would never consider F2P, someone would troll the forums years down the road and say "OMG, WHY HAZ U LIED 2 ME?!?!?!?!"

Means zip, squat, nada. The same thing was said about putting MU Uniforms and Preorder Bonuses in the C-Store.... "no plans to do this in the immediate future". Then a couple months later it happens.

I'm almost convinced that Cryptic is deliberately saying things just to keep its dwindling player base hanging on and grasping at straws of desperate hope.

UGC hint hint, nudge nudge... stay tuned for season 3!

After months of delay, here is your buggy and worthless UGC! Which 5 of 5 species do you want to kill? asteroid meter: heavy or ultra heavy. What color would you like the planet to be? Enjoy!

F2P nudge, nudge, hint, hint.... "We think it's an interesting idea."

5 months later... "There are lots of factors to consider..."

3 months later... "We've considered it, and have decided the time may not be right..."

Then, when only a handful of lifers are left playing the forums, Cryptic announces: "We've begun the initial planning stage to investigate the considerations of a F2P revenue stream. Stay tuned!"
