How would it be possible to get CBS to approve of this when all we hear is that they have such tight control on the IP that it takes forever to get something approved?

    Holodeck. It can create anything.

As long as UGC takes place in the "holodeck" and is not part of the "real" game world, then there is no conflict of canon or IP with CBS. And the fact that the Devs are already working on this system and said they hope to have it in Season 3 probably means they have already been given permission by CBS. Either way, if you dont like it you dont have to use it. Its just that simple.

    People are overestimating UGC.

We are most likely going to be provided a pre-made set of menues that combine into a mission, but no actual modification allowed. For example, we can choose Map 3, with 2 Klingon Spawn Points, 4 scanable locations, and a fleet of 3 ships in orbit. Beyond that, we'll be constrained on what we can control.

I doubt we can add text, name NPCs, or create ship layouts. I'm CERTAIN we won't be allowed to upload custom models or textures.

COH has UGC and that's how they manage it.

With all the years of watching trek why is it that I don't know what UGC means lol

After reading more I see what you mean user created content... I think.

Well the point is that they could alow it and not have to worry about IP because anything fans make would fall under the catagory of "fan fiction" which is legal. You just can't make money off of someones IP, but if I like Star Wars I can write a whole book about it and declare it "Fan Fiction" It will never be part of the offial Star Wars Universe (mabey picked up by the Expanded Universe if I'm lucky). So anything made in STO by players even their RP stories are Fan Fiction so any levels/races/ship configurations all of it is fan fiction and not a problem with breaking IP so no CBS has no control over that.

    User Generated Content.

It's not a Star Trek reference, but a gaming one.

CoX was more than happy to let us add text, name NPCs, heck, create our own NPCs.

I wish they would allow us to upload our own models. That would be awsome but i do doubt it. I remember they said in an interview that they might look at places like Vulcan and Earth being open for UGC

And where was the IP for that? No tv show, or movies attached to CoX....

Once again, as long as the UGC takes place in the holodeck and not in the "real" game world, then there is no IP problem. And the fact that Cryptic is already developing and talking about this system suggests CBS has already approved it. If you dont want to use it, dont. No one will make you.

I really hope you're not right here. I wouldn't be that surprised though.

There was a post awhile back when dstahl said that the UGC will not be like the genesis thingy that randomly generates 4/4 bad guys on random planets.

I'm pretty sure that we'll get something that allows flexibility and creativity.

Honestly, when I first heard about the Genesis system I was pumped, then I played beta, and realized it was the same access database running over the same 5 missions with different backdrops. It was touted as creating thousands of missions, yet as in Klingon space, you only have 1 ground and 3 space ones...

Pretty much hits the nail on the head here. The only thing ST canon in this game is the manifold plot, stories, characters, timelines, etc., that come out of STO. For example, allowing a shareable database of player made races or allowing users to create fully customizeable missions doesn't effect ST canon one iota.

I'm all for UGC. It would open up a new avenue of content. Some of the players would probably dedicate their STO time strictly to that. But if the UGC creation options were extremely limited and watered down as some of you say, that would suck eggs.

I already had the feeling that when we get UGC it'll suck. I want something at the level of at least the WCIII map maker (minus the ability to add your own models, sounds, whatever).

I want to build my own maps. I want to customize everything. I want to do it all.

I bet I'll be horribly disappointed with TRIBBLE levels of customization.

    I completely agree.

Cryptic, if you want players to have more of a role in the expansion of this games universe then give us real un-instanced territory and resources to fight for. Thats all we need for players to create their own stories. Missions are repetitive enough as it is without US making another thousand of them.

If this game goes all UGC for updates, it will be dead before the world ends in 2012. I feel they are gonna ditch this on the players to keep funding their new Neverwinter Nights MMO..... Sad, how the Star Trek IP has been trashed.

You might see the following options for UGC in Star Trek Online:
    • Clicky Items
    • Details of Items
    • Kill Item
    • Portal Selection
    • Rotate Function
    • Spawn Points
    • Talk or Dialogue Tree Options
    • Door Options
    • "Rooms"
    • Start Spawn Locations
    • Options for Start/Finish

    My Rationale:
    • There are icons in the current Season 2 build on Tribble for the above and more

Now this doesn't mean that all these features would be included, it just means they're being tested internally. We may see more - we may see less.

    The Baumer has spoken.

As a follow-up. I don't see why UGC has so much backlash - especially since dev resources from Cryptic's other projects are being used for it...

As long as the servers were still up if UGC was any kind of good I'd just start treating it like a multiplayer game with a map editor, not an MMO in any way.

Funny how UGC means the developers can focus on new game mechanics, improved Genesis missions, and PvP (as it should tie over PvE players for a long time).

Heck. UGC would hold over virtually all the Feds while the Devs could could even do another set of Klingon Missions and New PvP-Oriented Content for the Klingons. :D
