I was curious what people thought about ship varients differing interms of weapon slots and capablities opposed to just apperance an example of what I mean in simiplified form and yes i'm takeing liberties here is this as example we have a light cruiser DER - Destroyer Escort from SFC 2 its essentially the same tier and essentially the same ship cosmetically as this ship
DER - Destroyer Escort
http://www.sfc2.net/fedshipdetail.asp?Type=LightCruiser&ShipID=32
DD - Destroyer
http://www.sfc2.net/fedshipdetail.asp?Type=LightCruiser&ShipID=35
Notice while both ships are of the same class there consols and weapons load is quite different. I was wondering what people thought of adding somthing like this in terms of sto ship varients for example the Differerece between ships like the Costitution class refit the Vesper and Excalibur as am example. while still allowing customization of weapons ect.

I like it as is, aesthetic only. That frees the players to be creative without gimping them in any way.
then after saying that they added gal x
Galaxy-X blows that away
Up-coming nebula and Excelsior on the C-Store also blows that away.
Result: Cryptic are complete liars when they claim only cosmetic options will go on the C-Store
Regardless, the idea of encouraging more of this behaviour is just insane stupidity. If different varients are going to get different stats, start with the basic configurations we currently have ingame. Unfortunatly, anyone with intelligence will see the obvious flaw here.
3 varients per class + the ability to customise into kitbash mixed designs = No chance.
There would be nothing stopping someone from building a Gallant class Tactical Escort but having the hull configuration like the Defiant unless each section somehow grants individual modifiers. That is just simply going to be an INSANE amount of programming to achieve and balance.
I don't think they're complete liars, i only think that they're a little unexperienced. They were caught with their pants down.
I really believe that they meant what they said, that they didn't intended to put game-changing items on the C-Store. But then the game probably didn't sold as well as they had hoped, so they had to look elsewhere for income.
Cryptic say they would only put cosmetic items on the C-Store.
Galaxy-X is not cosmetic, Excelsior is not cosmetic, Nebula is not cosmetic.
Result: Liars that continue to lie
Cryptic Apologist: "But, but, its not Cryptics fault they are lying, its our fault because we arent giving them enough income "
Hmmm, what have I heard THAT kind of apologist attitude before ?
Hmm.. don't think you understood exactly what i've said..
The problem is that they are not doing well with STO and I suspect that CBS is breathing down their collective neck to show a profit just as hard as some of us are for a playable and fair game. How they achieve that profit however, is entirely up to them.
So, they chose to manipulate the CStore instead of spending money on advertising to populate the servers. Foolish and shortsighted? yes, definitely. Inexperienced? not even close.
Trying to backpedal now, eh ?
Lets take a look:
Cryptic said they would only put cosmetic items on the C-Store. They did.
Thus they lied.
The rest of this is just useless apologism in the attempt to justify their actions...
They were caught with their pants down in offering the Galaxy-X as a C-Store item so now they intend to add MORE non-cosmetic items ?
Once can be attributed to being an accident,
Twice is an indication of intent
Thrice is an indication of policy
Yet they continue to do so... thus they lied.
End of story.
Oh noes... they arent earning enough !
Mmm, turns out people arent too happy buying a product that was launched incomplete, a company that cannot keep to deadlines or keep content coming that keeps players satisfied.
Oh right, none of that is Cryptic's fault. Clearly its the fault of the players...
Yeah that's right, i meant the current team behind STO. An experienced team leader or director would NEVER say "never". They wouldn't make promises that they didn't know if they would be able to keep.
I'm not really disappointed at this, i'm not a kid.. **** happens and people make mistakes. However how they choose to roll with this remains to be seen. dStahl said that he is trying to make game-changing itens such as the Gal-X and the Exc/Neb to be avaible through in-game means, so he has the heart in the right place.
I agree. There is no reason to give stats to the individual parts of the ship. Let us customize our ships so they appeal to us visually, and bugger all to the stats of it.
Exactly. Some people choose to believe that everyone at Cryptic is an evil sith lord or some villain from a mexican soap opera.
This whole industry is plagued on both ends by kneejerk reactionsts. There is no way around that but there must be a middle ground where mediation can take place. It seems that neither side is interested in that though or there would be a division in place for that purpose.
Cryptic is not interested in hearing about where they are going wrong and the community is even less interested in being organized to the point where we can even begin to negotiate. I swear, controlling mmorpg communities is like herding cats.
