My ship name is the U.S.S. TRIBBLE-Yu which I named after one of my best friends and Cryptic wants me to change it because some one probably reported it as a curse word. When in fact there are several people with that name in real life look it up in a serch engine and there will be several community sites that pop-up. Right now I am on restiction because of that name where it does not break any of their naming rules. The only one that it comes close to breaking is the first one "Be designed to impersonate a real life individual or entity" but as I am naming a ship and not a person it does not impersonate anyone. In my opinion if any one thinks that TRIBBLE Yu is a bad word they are just simply uncultured.
Please let me know what you think on this subject.
Well we do have someone at work with that name. Of course we all use nicknames when talking to him.
Seriously though and not to be culturally insensitive but anyone that hass been in the US for more than a day will use a nickname with that name... just sayin'
Incorporate vulgar, obscene, hateful, defamatory language or imagery.
Now the forum policy on the same topic is more expanded:
8. You may not use vulgar, harmful, harassing, fraudulent, threatening, abusive, libelous, defamatory, obscene, hateful, sexually explicit, racially/ethnically charged or otherwise objectionable language. Abbreviations, self censoring, and attempts to circumvent our censure software also violate these Guidelines. If your post contains a word that is censored by our software, you must remove that word or the post will be removed. If you feel that the software censor is acting in error, please contact us.
*Underline is mine.
So, if you apply the more expanded policy on profanity then your name, of a real person or not, can still be interpreted as trying to circumvent the profanity filter.. Especially since it sounds and is spelled similar to obvious profanity.
In my opinion if any one thinks that TRIBBLE Yu is a bad word they are just simply uncultured.
On the contrary. A cultured person would realize how English speakers could take that name as an insulting phrase.
That said, I personally have no problem with the name (or really anything else anyone chooses to name their ship or crew), but I can see how some others would. It sucks (in my opinion), but I guess Cryptic is just erring on the side of caution.

I think I had the U.S.S. Azzrammer, the U.S.S. PorkchopExpress and the I.K.S. Da'Kock at one point... the trick is not to get reported

As you said it is the Forum policy and not the in-game policy but i do understand where you and cryptic are coming from, but it is a real name. What if I got my friend to play this game and wanted to use his real name I mean they could tell that it is his name by his credit card would cryptic say he can't use his real name? I am mostly mad because they put me on a 3 hour resrtiction from the game.
On topic, I know a few researchers I work with that have funny sounding names if you read it in english, they sound totally different when you say it. Pwe Yuo is is one... Sounds like "Pay Ywow" when you when pronounced correctly. From Laos, kool person. Accept diversity, embrace it, and don't forget to vote " More Klingon Content" in the next poll...
You want opinions on the use of childish names used in an obvious attempt to circumvate cryptics naming policy? I predict flames & moderator closure in short order..

Apperantly you havn't left your hometown and seen the world if you think that it is childish to name something after a friend

If a name sound's like a curse word, and I can assure you the one being mentioned here DOES and I don't need to say what it sounds like, then it's against the naming policy and should've been common sense to NOT use.
A cultured person would realize how English speakers could take that name as an insulting phrase.
[1]Incorporate vulgar, obscene, hateful, defamatory language or imagery
Apparently the OP isn't cultured enough to see that this violates this rule..
[2]Be derogatory towards racial, ethnical, cultural background, or sexual orientation
By using your 'friends' name to veil an attempt to violate rule 1, you have now also brought rule 2 into play..
In that you have used his name in a fashion that is derogatory towards both his race, ethnical & cultural backgrounds.
I also know someone named TRIBBLE-Yu, someone named TRIBBLE-Nhi Phuong and someone named Wei-Yu.
These a real names. And if Cryptic is not willing to cater to an audience from all sorts of cultural backgrounds, they should not have released a game that is open to the world.
ps. I saw the USS Hitler yesterday, so maybe Cryptic should be a little more worried about fixing their naming filter before going after real people's names.
pps. Yes I am still bitter about the name "Anichent" being disallowed by the naming filter....
It doesn't mater if the name used was a actual name or not. It is the fact that the name CAN be read as phonetically sounding vulgar in ENGLISH. Since the name can appear to be an attempt to get around the naming policy, it can be banned, rejected or whatnot. Wether or not you were using that name as a way to get around the naming policy or as you say as a tribute to a friend is immaterail. The fact that you can not put a sign on that name to explain to people that it is a person name is why it will get you into trouble regardless. Therefore, I would suggest just going with the policy and thinking about what the name sounds like in the future.
Just as an aside, I do believe that your intial post is in violation of the forums TOS rule #19.

Herein lies the grey area that exists around all 'naming' policies in MMO's..
'TRIBBLE-Yu' in English vernacular can be interpreted as vulgar or profanity. And when used in that manner violates several rules.
Just as you have interpreted the use of the name 'Hitler' as a reference to a infamous historical figure, can this not also be the name of someone's friend? I doubt that surname has been erased from existence. ( I am not in any way condoning the use of this name, as I agree it should be excluded by the naming filter. I am just using it as an example)
They disallowed "Anichent", I agree thats pretty weak....but it is an ingame NPC.

OKay.....but what if it was his name? just hypothetically speaking. I'd be pretty mad if my name "sounded bad" in a different language so it was banned from me using it.
Gotta love this. People who think they are being so cool using words that sound like curse words and when they get caught they come on the forums and cry like babies. Probably drunk when they came up with the name and thought it would be funny to use it in game. Stop trying to be slick and follow the rules and you won't have any problems. That simple. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to lay off the booze or whatever poseses you to do things like that.

No, it was not. The names of the twins from Austin Powers start with an "F" and are listed in the video since they are aparently bad words on the forums.. heh.

Then again; common sense isn't common anymore.
Name came from the launch days when the servers were really screwy, One had to have alot of patience at that time to play.
Glad its gotten way better since.
Where specifically in my post did I mention your 'ship' name as it relates to your 'friend'???
So now I will...

But its a first name, and I had it first...... its like them disallowing James T., Katherine, Tom, Montgomery or Leonard...
*hymph* I`m never gonna get over this lol.
I still have yet to meet this infamous NPC though
OKay.....but what if it was his name? just hypothetically speaking. I'd be pretty mad if my name "sounded bad" in a different language so it was banned from me using it.
North Wing of Memory Alpha (crafting sytem/planet)
And I feel your pain, your sig reminded me that I couldn't use the surname 'Garak' on my Cardassian Alt.
I totally agree!!

Spot on. Except the people who do this are more probably not drunk, just very young. I used to do similar stuff... when I was 12.
