*I attempted to search this topic, but searching the word "maps" .....well, you get quite a few unrelated posts.*
This game is making strides since launch. Diplomacy, STF's, and the cap raise are either here or soon will be. One area of the game that I believe has been neglected so far is the mapping technology. I would love to see the maps get significant improvement. I'm not sure how easy/difficult my idea would be to implement, but I wanted to share it.
I think it would be great if the map we use in sector space was controlled somewhat like using google earth. Where you can start very wide and zoom into an area that you want to see closer. It would be cool if at a certain point, the map became more of a 3-D hologram as you zoomed in. Maybe even a search bar could be added.
The area maps are all pretty bland imo. If they we cleaned up and looked crisper, maybe even a little 3-D added to buildings and such, they may become a little more user friendly.
I guess what I would really like is if the map seemed a lot more intricate. I for one would love to be able to spend time on the map screen really charting the galaxy. Seeing what has been explored and what has not. We all use the map as a tool to play the game, it would be awesome if the map would be something to really lose an hour just playing around with.
I would love to hear any comments or suggestions you guys have...
thanks

The maps seem like an afterthought.
The maps sort of zoom in now but they leave a lot to be desired. I would like to see some clear legend. There should be a master list of systems and planets as well so instead of having people ask in zone where "X" is, you can see it on the madter list and realize how many systems you will have to travel before it appears on the system navigation map. THere are so many areas where it can be improved.
Hell some missions could be all about cartography. "Drop X number of probes these points to help map the planets surface." While down there come into contact with local indigeonous populations, wild-life, environmental hazerds ... you know like Star Trek.
