Mac Version

Alright. This is... probably a dumb question. But I'm a dumb person, so I'll ask it anyway.

Is there any possibility of ya'll making a Mac OS version of this game for us Apple lovers? Or is that something extremely unlikely/not a chance in hell?

They've already said there were no plans for a Mac port - possibly because the Mac gaming community is too small of a percentage of the overall market, or possibly because Macs can already emulate PCs. The low number of games that become available to Macs is one of the reasons I 'switched over' to PCs a decade ago.

I run on a Mac with the unofficial WINE thing. Works perfectly, better than it would on my PC.

And Valve is a part of that low number. No need to pay for an overpriced computer if you're a gamer.

LOL... yeah gamers are all about the budget PCs aren't they?

If you search the forums you'll find someone did a bunch of leg work making it function under WINE. I run it on my 17" MacBook Pro under Bootcamp and it runs flawlessly. I do get an error message stating my drivers are unidentified, however I use it's default settings and have never noticed any issues. I'm using Vista on Bootcamp with no plans to switch over to Windows 7.

No, they're not. But comparable Macs always cost about $1000 dollars more. And most games will run fine on an $800 computer. And most of those games wont run AT ALL on a mac. EDIT: And I chose the word "overpriced" for a reason. Overpriced means more expensive than is necessary. I don't have a problem building a $1500 PC. I have a problem with building a $2500+ Mac (the Mac Pro, which is what you'd need to emulate a gaming computer)

If you're using a Mac, and you feel the price is justified, then you're mostly likely using software that runs better on a Mac (such as multimedia editing software). If you're not using said software, I'm sorry, but you fell into Apple's marketing trap. A strictly gamer has no need for Macs.

I would hope that Cryptic first concerns themselves with getting STO to run without issues on PC's before they bother to create a port for "some other OS"... ;)

As I've seen stated above, Cryptic has mentioned several times that there were no plans to port STO over for the Mac OS. WINE or some other emulator software would probably be your best bet in order to play STO on your phone, err, pad, err, pod, errr other calculating device... ;)

without access to source... and someone really really good with Wine, its unlikely a really good port will be made. If/when they do decide to do it, their cheapest and probably preferred way will be to work with Transgaming to make a Cider based port. If they go that way it should be able to be a very good running port and keep using the same Windows codebase, keeping costs drastically down.

They have a lot on their plate right now, so looking into anything like this is very low priority. I wouldn't expect a Mac port for years. Until then you can use the wrapper I made... link in my signature. I keep trying to make it better, but theres some limitations I haven't gotten around... some of those are going to be fixed around Oct/Nov, others... no idea. Its just a spare time hobby type thing :-)

It would be a lot better if they allowed me to distribute their code so I could make a Mac version you didn't have to worry about setting up the wrapper and getting your game inside of it, but they have legal issues to deal with.
