so what's the point of the runabouts? seems that should have been the ships you start with in the game rather than miranda class. just wondering why anyone would ever buy one.
They start us off with the Miranda starships because the whole point of the game is that you're captain of your own starship from the very beginning. Not an oversized shuttle...a starship.
I mean, yeah, that's a design decision a lot of people don't like. Fine. But it's the decision they've gone with.
That means the runabouts are essentially just toys. They don't do anything. They're vanity ships. Now, I don't like that - I'd have preferred for there to be some meaningful role given to runabouts and shuttles in the game.
But eh, whatever. Clearly it's not important to the devs.

There are only so many dev resources to go around.
As a fan of DS9, I appreciate their inclusion in the game, and I can live with not having any real purpose to them.
yep they're vanity ships basically. Their usefulness is the same thing you eventually ask about other lower tiered ships really, about the only reasons for keeping on with them is either the extra challenge or the love of the ship.
On their own i don't see the use but attached to a larger ship they could be used for specific missions that in some way require a shuttle, like laying mines beside a hidden fleet of Cardassian ships as Riker did or even as mundane as an ep that has you shuttling down to a planet instead of beaming as we saw quite often in the shows.
In terms of it being a lower tier ship i think they could do some interesting things with pvp and ship tiers. give maps a set amount of each tier for each side, so you could have 10 tier 5s, 10 tier 4s, 10 tier 3s and so on. This way the group who also has people in lower tiered ships will have a clear numbers advantage to the side that just has top tiered ships, i think this would make the lower tiers more valuable and sought after in pvp than they currently are.
Some Runabout only missions would be a nice addition. A situation in which a starship would be too much of a presence. Or an undercover mission of some sort.

That would be cool. Just pick one BO to go with and roll.
It would be nice to see runabouts 'equippable' if you are flying certain ships that could hold one (T4-T5 mostly) so that you could switch out from your main starship, hop in the runabout, and do some pew-pew-ing in it on the fly. As it is now, you constantly have to go to the major starbases to swap out which just makes using the runabout a hassle.

They are there to make your team lose in pvp extra quick... Seriously you see so many people get ****ed in arena and capture and hold when i guy shows up in a lower tier Ship or Runabout... Devs need to fix this in PVP...

but it gets hard to beat mishs in them later. i think they are made of paper

It's fun having one of the most(or the most) maneuverable ships in the game equipped with weapons that can one shot a Negh'var(at Lt level).
Comparing the runabout to other ships its like 3 decks high when compared to a intrepid class.
they were meant to be dockable inside most starships being only slightly larger than a shuttlecraft
