Proposal: Tying Starship Stats to Character (Customization)

I posted this previously in the Tribble Forum, but since it didn't really belong there I've taken it upon myself to repost it here hoping to get some general feedback about the idea's from the community. Hopefully it can catch the attention of a few of the Dev's as well.

I've thought about this a bit and even tho it would require some tweaking I thought if the devs were somehow able to tie a ships settings to our character as opposed to specific ships it would allow for far more diversity and variety in abilities/llooks.

I'll use Rear Admiral for my purposes here, so say as an example we have acess to Tier 5 level ships we could choose our ship type and basic tier I'll say 3rd tier ships just because they're ugly and nobody likes them.

So I chose my basic 3rd tier ship and I want to fly a cruiser this is auto retrofit with the basic stats of a 5th tier ship. And through advanced customization options not unlike Uniform and current ships customization we can choose which ensign BOFF slot and additional console we can have on the ship say for arguments sake I wanted to choose the science ensign and tactical console. The skill set would reflect which ensigns you have so it would be considered a Star Cruiser.

Now since this would be a Tier 5 ship at VA we might gain the option to fully retrofit our ship with the current available ability ie. Saucer Seperation. At which point (and this is pretty thin since I'm not entirely familiar with how the new setup for the Cruiser refit is) Gaining the SS ability would remove desiganted hull/turn rate/console or whatever it is thats different about that specific ship in exchange for the SS ability. This would also move the skillset into the retrofit catagory.

As I said the idea may require some tweaking but I think if it's possible to go this route it might make it easier down the line to upgrade ships without having to worry about making older designs obsolete, and could reduce the ammount of work they'd need to do in the long run to create new ships/tiers ect. Which would leave more time for pumping out content as opposed to cosmetics and refits.

This would also give the feel of an Admiral being able to hand pick and refit thier ship to thier liking as we've seen before and many people have shown an interest in doing. Now I'm not saying this should be something that available from the start but it would be cool as players reach RA and beyond.

(For Klingons just replace Ship types and Rank names accordingly in what I've written out as I'm not familiar enough with your level progression and ship styles to make side by side comparrisons.)

Now just to be clear here the main idea is to allow for a more diverse look between ships and not to mess with balance in any way. By attaching our ship stats to our character instead of each individual ship I believe it would allow for an easier flow between tiers and would make things a bit easier for the Dev's to come up with new skins for ships. This would also allow players to use skins from older tiers or ones they've spent money on in the C-Store for as long as they wish without them becoming dated or obsolete.

Just thought about this as well. This might also make it possible to further customize the look of starships. Say if you want to use a nassel type from another tier as long as it would fit with your pylons, or a saucer even. This might make things more difficult for the art department initally tho.

I look forward to seeing what ya'll think,

a complaint that seems like it is fighting a losing battle as they sell ships

since one cannot craft a ship, you have to buy one

they need a "poor man's" choice, like a guy that can;t buy a porche but he can take a vw and makes a dune buggy

makes no sense across the board for the player- the ships are the costumes - not the uniforms-
but makes perfect sense if your selling ships

This wouldn't prevent them from selling additional skins on the C-Store if they chose to do so. It would just make previously released skins also usable regardless of level. If anything it would allow them to more easily release skins later on since they wouldn't have to worry about coding all the stats onto each ship individually. Thus lessening the time it takes to create a new ship either for normal advancement or the C-Store. Making the players feel like thier money isn't wasted on short term flashy accessories is always a good thing.

I do hope tho that Iit's not comming across as me complaining in this thread. Thats not my intention at all. I'm simply trying to put forth an idea that I feel would be mutually benifical to the players and the Dev team as a whole.

I thought there would be more people with an opion on this. Maybe I should have put the word Retrofit in the thread title. That words seems to be sparking some solid debates and discussions around here lately.
