EVE Online has a feature they call "Look at" in their space Overview menu. What it does is anchor the player's camera onto another ship/object. The only real purpose is to allow the player to get a really good look at other ships and objects, allowing the player to rotate their camera at any angle around the new focus. If the other ship zones out, the camera anchors back to the player's own ship. There is also a button/menu command to return the player's camera quickly back to their own ship.
More than once I've wanted to check out another player's ship without trying to fly circles around it awkwardly. And trying to get a good look at NPC ship in the middle of combat is fleeting at best. It would really showcase STO's artists' work to allow us to reassign our camera focus to other ships from time to time. Consider it the equivalent of "put it on the main viewer."
I am in total agreement on this. I play Star Wars Galaxies as well and in there is an option to "/examine" any targetable player/object and bring it up as a window to you to get a TRIBBLE look at that player or object. i go around all the time and do this in that game to get a good look at some of the characters/toons.
I would love to see some of these customized or NPC ships up close on a personal level to zoom in on and rotate around. Either in a camera view to their ship or a window would work.
