I have been playing Star Trek Online for a few months now and I have a few suggestions that I feel will make the gameplay both more realistic and more fun:
Ground Combat
FIrst of all, I feel the ground combat system is flawed. The problem is in how damage is hamdled. In all Star Trek Films and TV shows, one blast from and kind of phaser, disruptor, or any other weapon will at least seriously disable the person hit. I realise this would not work at all for any game, but my suggestion is change the "Health" bar to "Armor" then, once both the shield and armor have been disabled, one more shot will end the enemy. Second, I propose that enemys have more power in their shield and less in their health (armor). This provides realism by simulating the fact that a shield will take more gdamage than any kind of armor. Finaly, I do not believe that anyone should be able to simple recharge their health (armor) unless that happens naturally. In the current system, people whip out a medical tricorder and are better, but is this realistic at all? I do not oppose the ability to recharge shields at the touch of a button (with a cooldown of course) but doing the same to health (armor) doesn't make sence
Ships
This suggestion is regarding the new retrofit ships. I feel that all Vice Admiral escorts should have cloak, all Vice Admiral cruizers should have saucer sep. (or something to the same end) and all Vice Admiral science ships should have access to ablative armor (I realise the models are a lot of work, but I'm sure It can be done)
My reasoning for this is as follows,
The three "types" of ships (escort, cruizer, and science) each have their own "focus", science, tactical, or engeneiring, and each type has 3 classes, each of which has a "subfocus" such that every T5 ship has a Commander and Lieutenant Commander of one focus, and a Lieutenant from each of the other focuses, along with and extra ensign slot for the subfocus. he only difference between an advanced escort and a defiant refit is (or should be) the focus of the extra ensign slot, however as it stands, the refits give up a console for a special ability. I believe what should be done is to change the ship configurations such that the only difference between the three classes of any type is the affiliation of the extra ensin slot and extra console, and that the cloak, saucer seperation, and ablative generator instead be the perk for becoming Vice Admiral in general. I believe this is good, because it provides more room to customize exaxtly what the player wants the charachter to have, instead of having to confor to a certain class simple so they can obtain some special perk.
Any and all feedback from the community is apprechiated, thank you.
You are just substituting a health bar for armor, you could look at it like this. That the lower bar is your armor bar and when it gets near to empty, one more shot finishes you off. I personally don't have a problem with the way it's set up now. It's like every other game I've played where you don't get realistic damage from weapons like guns and swords. You think if a warrior from WoW hit you with some massive sword you'd still be standing there? Even if you had armor on? Or that if you got shot as many times as you do in COD you'd still be up and running?
Well the cloak is still a hotly debated item, but now that we have the Galaxy X with it, I would imagine you'll see it showing up for other ships soon. And the saucer separation has been talked about since the open beta, and while yes it would be cool, there are a number of issues that would have to be worked out, like how would you control the other part? Would you be in command of the saucer or star drive sections? What happens if one of them gets critically damaged? We might see it someday, but I wouldn't hold my breath that it's going to be any time soon. I too hope that we someday get the ablative armor, though I think since it will be used in the correct time, that it's not going to be as strong as what we saw in the last episode of Voyager.
