I've finally given in and ordered myself a juicy new HDTV, 1080p, and it claims to have these options for PC input...
HDMI PC Signal Capability
PC Input (15pin D-Sub) + Audio In
I currently have an aging but very capable GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB graphics card in my system with 2x DVI outputs. I'm basically wondering if buying a DVI to HDMI cable will be enough to have STO on the TV or if I'm trying to do something silly. I'm limited in knowledge of doing this with an HDTV so I'm hoping someone can give me more insight. I'm aware that the DVI to HDMI cable won't provide audio. Oh and this is related to STO.... vaguely :P
Certain Sets do strange things when putting DVI over HDMI. Apparently they aren't expecting raw, unformatted data from DVI (even though HDMI and DVI use the same type of digital signal). My set does this. It also has the 15pin D-Sub (Aka VGA input), and when I use a DVI-I to VGA converter, it instantly knows what to do with the signal; no oddities arise.
It is my experience that one thing you will need to do is make sure you set the game to windowed fullscreen in order to play. I had nothing but fits with SC2's beta and tv output because the frequency would go out of range for the tv. My only other issue was that text is exceptionally hard to read on the screen. Bear in mind though this is output to a 56' screen
The TV is a Sony Bravia so I'm hoping it would be fine with DVI to HDMI but if anyone else has thoughts I'd really appreciate it.
Well if its upper end, you shouldn't have problems. That extra thousand you pay for name brands usually just means no hassles like PC must be over VGA rather than HDMI, etc, for most people (as most people can't discern much video quality difference on the upper ends/ diminishing returns).
