Does Romulan Neutral zone matter in 2409?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
It seems like the Romulan nuetral zone which is very big and extremely important part of the Star Trek universe. So why in STO is it only 2 feet wide and Romulan space easy to get into?

I think they should add about a sctor's width between Federation space and Romulan space and make that the neutral zone. Also I would like it if you could'nt go into Romulan space, or at the very least have a couple rommie ships start following you.

Um, the complete collapse of governments tend to void treaties. Same reason were putting cloaks on the new model defiants with impunity.

Well the Federation for all their peaceful talk, sure loves cross non-chalantly into other Civilizations and tell them just how they are doing it wrong.

Seroiusly, Cryptic here is a Game angle I wanto you to do. Seriously have someone kick the Federation back a few light yrs. I mena really beat the hell out of them. Maybe then they'll learn to respect boundaries....

Not exactly with impunity. All of the Federaion ships that have cloaks are Admiral+ Rank. I like the explain that yes, Federation ships can get cloaks, but then can only be operated with Admiral level authorization.

Ever since beta, I always thought they should have put more emphasis on the neutral zone areas. One of the Fed missions even tell you to enter into the Klingon Neutral Zone (the PvP area), but the Neutral zone is never referenced anywhere else and it's not outlined on the map.

If it doesn't actually exist, fine...just don't talk about it. If it still exists (story wise) then put it on the dang map

We are in war with the romulans now I think.Cryptic just equipped the half federation with cloaking devices so we broke that famous treaty. We already had a 2 front war, looks like +1 is not a big prob. for the federation, they can handle it:cool:

(I thought that the federation seeks peace, silly me)

i sort of understand why they did it like they have, as its not much fun having fights in romulan space if you cant enter it, or fighting romulans ships because it would violate a treaty, but i would have preferred a more realistic approach with you playing cat and mouse games against them like the shows or fighting against romulans who have broken away from the empire.

doing patrols in the heart of their territory and blowing up their fleets as they patrol theirs seams wrong.

Wait, there's still a neutral zone? Thats news to me. I thought with the destruction of romulus and the central government, replaced by independent colonies crying for help and a badly broken successor martial government....

the borg did... then they were wussified

the dominion did... then they were wussified

the ... the list goes on, till writers wussify them all in the end

if Cryptic did this, it would be nothing new, just the same 'ol plot device they would eventually need to write themselves out of.

U might appreciate the Destiny timeline of books. SPOILERS for Destiny timeline: Both the federation and klingon empire are decimated with hundreds of worlds burned to the ground by the borg, with deaths close to a trillion. All other beta and alpha quadrant factions also suffer heavy damage. I cant remember if its 25% or more than half of starfleet destroyed. Now that would've been a good place to base STO in, other than we have no borg to fight, and technology is stagnanted at 2380s levels for quite awhile. Really answered what would happen if the borg got serious about killing us off, instead of assimilating us. Total wipeout.

Two fronts? My god, I only wish.
Let's take a count of who we're fighting now and please do let me know if I missed any:

Borg, Klingon, two different Romulan factions, Terran Federation, True Way, Undine, and only because they don't care about factions even though they are technically allied with the Romulans, Hirogen.

Did I miss any that wage war against us?

Ah yes the typhon pact. The destiny timeline really sounds much more fun than STO's.

Actually that would've worked. Klingons would be either part of the federation, or in some kind of formal alliance, and on the other side we have the Typhon Pact. What a great setup for an MMO.

i'd better stop that train of thought before i get overwhelmed considering that lost opportunity.

Well, I have no idea how much of the storyline stuff runs through CBS/Paramount and by proxy their media wings. It is entirely possible there is stuff in the pipeline that will detail this. Also since I haven't read that far(still on the 2nd overall book of that 'season') has the Destruction of Romulus already taken place? I am unsure from here what the timeframe is for those events.

The time for these events are in the 2380s. It all happens pretty much within the decade after nemesis. So the hobus supernova is still very far off, and im not even sure it will happen in this timeline, because there's no reference at all.

Much as i would love to see a proper Fed-klingon alliance versus the Typhon pact, i already detailed in another thread how hard it would be to make that F-K alliance come together again, and theres the fact some Typhon pact members are in the Klingon faction now.

Ladies and genetelmen may I welcome you to a star trek universe designed to offer good game play.

    *shows STO universe*

May I now welcome you to a star trek universe designed to offer good story line for tv shows.

*shows random star trek series/movie universe*

Thank you all I hope you enjoyed the tour.

Considering there are Gorn, Romulans, and Klingons running around in Federation sectors I would say..no. No Neutral Zone. Should there be NZs? You bet!. Throw them out in between faction space and call them free roam pvp sectors: Enter at your own risk.

Its safe to say as a boundary they don't exist anymore. Consider if you will the fact that if they did, we have already violated them so badly with our missions that its a moot point.

I say yes as well, but a simple "exclude from pvp" player tag should be allowed for those who don't pvp but need access to Romulon space for pve missions.
As and addition I say make each zone have a pvp mission based on its faction and who it doesn't belong to.
Such as for Klingon space a Fed player could acquire "Defend against Klingon advances" and be tasked to kill or be involved in "x" amount of klingon players deaths.

I just finished reading that series...they were pretty good.

It brought the crews of the Enterprise (cpt Picard), Titan (cpt Riker), and Aventine (cpt Ezri Dax) together for one story...and explained the origins of the Borg!

So you propose the neutral zones be laid out like Klingon sector space is? IE systems the need to be entered in order to participate in PVP as opposed to sectors?

sadly they didn't have to be separate... not in the least.

They decided to make it this way based on... umm it sure wasn't play-testing and feedback... so, it maybe has another base...I wonder what that was??

No. I propose an open pvp sector, but with the ability to allow those who don't pvp access to travel through unmolested.
Yes. Allow pvp-based mission to those who are willing to take the risk.

The WoW system then. Its a good idea, but should be for the klingon-fed border. The neutral zone there's still sort of up anyway. But the Rom one really should be gone. There's no government to hold the treaty to anymore.

    Nice new avatar btw, roach.
