How to make Crafting Viable again, and make ship crafting possible!

First off, it's way easy to get any ship that's a standard ship. Crafting in STO leaves much to be desired.

Memory Alpha items that are created are no better than items that can easily be obtained through mission running. So, this is my suggestion for our crafting system.

We need something unique to crafting, yet something that works to fit into the confines of the Star Trek Universe, as well as the MMO world as a whole. My suggestion is to allow us to custom create items, using a point system. This would work for any item created, as well as ships.

By developing a well balanced point system to be used in the creation of items, we can custom create items from consoles to ships to ship equipment, and even ground based equipment. We can see ships that have all one type of station, or perhaps ships that have 5 officer stations instead of the standard 4.

The general concept is you start with a pool of points depending on the level and type of item/ship. Each additional item/slot/officer station added takes away from the overall pool of points available. Standard specification can be exceeded, but at a point cost penalty higher than what would be normal, so that ship with 5 bridge officer slots may not have as strong of a hull, or may have to sacrifice console or device slots, or have a weaker hull, etc etc. I believe I have relayed the concept rather well.

Another aspect to custom ship building is we can perhaps design a ship whos weapon arcs and slots can be customized. Let's take a star cruiser with 4 rear and 4 aft slots. Well, standard ships those arcs are from the front for any weapon, but what if we were to start that arc 45 degrees off front/rear? So the weapon itself retains it's true arc, but the overall firing arc has changed from the 315 to 45 degree radials to the 270 to 360/0 radials, offering some options.

The ideas are limitless here. Weapons/items/ships can be so custom made that it may be hard pressed to find two of the same custom items that are made alike.

Think about it. The options are limitless on what we can do. DEVS merely need to listen, and I do hope this post does get noticed. If I knew of a way to send this directly to a lead developer, I would, as I really think this idea has strong merit, and I don't know if it's been discussed as of yet.

Also to add, those points also relate to which and how many data samples are used.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I'm all for improved crafting as long as it doesn't turn into what it has in so many other games. A way for people to 'buy' their character invulnerability in pvp. I played City of Heroes before this, another Cryptic title before it was picked up by NCSoft. The crafting in that game essentially BROKE PvP. Once people could manufacture Purple sets, all they needed to do was spend $50 on credits from some credit farmer and they could pimp out an almost unbeatable toon in PvP. The casual player never stood a chance.
I enjoy PvP in this game. I enjoy that I can compete against people even if their equipment and gear is a bit better than mine. I like that there are no sets or crafting 'cheats'.

So, while I would like to see crafting expand into say purple items and other types of ship weapons etc. I am wholly NOT for giving players a way to cheat the combat system. I am tired of broken games.

hum... No offense but a good crafting system is not a way to cheat. A good crafting system is there to add flavor to a game and allow player more option. Right now the crafting we have is a joke at best. I almost maxed out all my level in crafting but i do not see the use for it. You can not craft lots of stuff (or what i want to use) and the lvl of item are not really worth it... They are not really special.

Any way i also find the difference between common, uncommon and rare for some item to be also stupid and not worth the price put on them.

ya know .. I was just about to start a thread about crafting vs Cryptic Store. IMHO if crafting were done properly some of the items .. ( and some things that would be unique to crafting) would be a genuine way to employ "crafting skills" . IMHO it would be a good way to build specialized body designs or weapons or even defensive articles to make the STO experience unique to those who enjoy crafting in a MMO.

Well said. I've always enjoyed crafting in an MMO, not because I get 'pimped' out or become invulnerable, but simply because:
    - It takes time and effort to do well.
    - It brings a great sense of accomplishment to a game
    - It brings a sense of player control to a MMO, as apposed to NPC control
    - It allows for player customizations and looks that give their ship a sense of pride and ownership
    - It allows for other customizations that would otherwise be impossible (example: customized consol specs; customized ship weapons etc)
    - If done well, it allows for greater variation of ship tactics and actually lessons the ability for people to create 'pimped' out builds. The more customizations, the more variations, which equals less people playing the same way with the same items, in the same-looking ships... silencing the fears of the vast majority of PvP'ers

In my opinion, a great crafting system has been long overdue in this game, with opportunities that could be endless and very entertaining.

No offense taken. I am all for crafting and even being able to make things as long as it doesn't turn into a way to beat the system. Let's face iot, it's in the nature of many players ... I knwow some of them to exploit every advantage. Give them an inch they take a mile.
I like the playing field as it is. Yes, the crafting leaves a lot to be desired and yes, it should be expanded. On this we agree. I'm just saying to not overdo it. It's too easy to go over the line and end up creating a monster. Perhaps being able to craft unique items for ships would be cool but only allowing one uniquely crafted item per ship, so you don't end up with the Juggernaut problem you had in CoH.

I dunno, perhaps it's your goal to break it ... to test the limits and see if you can out-special everyone in the game. No offense meant. But as Alfred said to Bruce Wayne "Some men just want to watch the world burn." ... just because they can.

Crafting doesn't need to make better gear, it just needs to make different and more varied gear. I would personally love to be able to upgrade armor and weapons not only for stats but also for appearances too. Kits actually are the highest on my customization wish list. Let us buy tactical/engineering/science kit belts and then use crafting to add abilities to it.

I agree as well. Just as certain aspects of the game (finding rare drops or "buying hulls from the C-store" ) IMHO there can and should be available items through crafting. Those items can varry in design from uncommon to VERY RARE (just as items found in game. ALSO (IMHO) some of those items could reflect a cosmetic enhancement as well.

Crafting would not have access to "better" drops than other players, only another avenue of obtaining items to play the game, some of which would also be seen through cosmetic varriants.
