... how about a nice 'No Thank You, O Vast and Awe-Inspiring Armada of Enemy Vessels, I'm Just Passing Through and Don't Have the Time or the Desire to Fight You Right Now' toggle for those of us who are no longer quite so... entertained... by them?

Preferably not in the C-store, thank you. Maybe an accolade: "DSEnuff Already!" granted (account-wide and retroactive) after the 25th Close Encounter of the Unwanted Kind.

How about it?

Here's my DSE Challenge: revisit this thread in, say, five months and see if you still feel the same. :D

My best friend is here; and takes your challenge. He was in OB and CB, screennamed Great_Milenko, and accetpt your challenge. Yes, he HAS been playing that long, and yes he STILL does feel that way.

He's the one that got me the neat avatar lol

I on the other hand have been here a week or two; and while you may be correct that my mind may change, I currently dont think so.

If the DSEs were more like random terrain encounters in most MMOs I would agree. But they're Diet Fleet Actions that suck you in from anywhere on the map into the same giant armada for the whole sector via a loading screen... there are so many levels on which they just **** me off.

and completely getting rid of them would make it better how? So that you dont have to worry about getting attacked EVER unless you are in a mission?
    Um, no thanks.
Reminds me of (no Im not saying its the same thintg so please take this the way its meant) a PVP server vs a non PVP in WoW. walking around in contested areas as a low level is always more fun cause other than the mobs, you have the chance of a random PC ganking you. Same thing with 0.0 in EVE vs Empire space.

If you dont just jump back out, you can go for fun an profit for killing the things. If your idea of fun and profit isnt killing ships, then you might be in the wrong game given that from what Ive seen thus far thats 90% of the game. Even the exploration missions are combat missions a large % of the time lol

No. It's not just that. I have had them pull my captains in when my captains were...

...exiting a mission. Look out! Ship-jacked.
...trying to enter a mission. Click on the button to enter a system and look out! Ship-jacked.
...just coming out of a DSE and look out! Ship-jacked.
...checking the map. Okay, where to next? Look out! Ship-jacked.
...hail Starfleet to turn in a mission - what reward to take - look out! Ship-jacked!
...actively avoiding one enemy contact only to be ship-jacked by another one coming from a different direction.

I'm tired of it. It's not fun anymore. I'm not asking for them to be removed from the game, but I would appreciate some means of toggling them OFF for those of us who have had enough of them.

I HATE being dumped into those DSE's !!!

Traveling sector space takes so long and you basically have to sit there and keep an eye on your ship while it plods along from point A to B. That is time that could be spent making a kitchen or bathroom run...

But NO... I have to play dodge-ball with those things.

That reminds me of the other thing...

A 'no-DSE' toggle option would be perfectly appropriate. It would be a quick and easy representation of ordering your navigator to avoid contact with the enemy at all costs, as opposed to the more difficult proposition of making the autopilot competent enough to dodge the DSEs.

I further submit that the DSEs we currently experience in-game are illogical and not at all representative of the Star Trek IP. Let us compare.

    What we have:

An enemy vessel approaches. It alters course, closes in - and suddenly we are in the midst of an endless array of opponents, of which we are asked to defeat ten groups.

The enemies change, depending on the location, but the format does not.

    What I *wish* we had:

(These are examples of Deep Space Encounters from TOS and TNG - these two being the Trek series with which I am most familiar - feel free to add others from DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise - presented in the form of quotes taken from various episodes. See if you can name the episodes. Note: many of the TOS episodes are available on the CBS channel on YouTube.)

    1. "Eyes... in the dark... one moon circles."

    2. "My function is to probe for biological infestations, to destroy that which is not perfect. I am Nomad."

    3. "I can't tell you how delighted I am to have visitors from the very planet that I've made my hobby. Yes, but according to my observations, I didn't think you capable of such voyages."

    4. "I remember a voice. Did I hear it say I had been sleeping for two centuries?"

    5. "We look for things to make us go."

    6. "Is anybody out there?"

    7. "Rai and Jiri at Lungha. Rai of Lowani. Lowani under two moons. Jiri of Ubaya. Ubaya of crossed roads at Lungha. Lungha, her sky grey. Rai and Jiri at Lungha."

    8. "Please, dear, you've had a high fever for three days. You mustn't push yourself too quickly."

    9. "To any and all space travellers passing within range of the planet Scalos, I send you an urgent appeal for help. My comrades and I are the last surviving members of what was once a thriving civilization."

    10. "We do not colonize. We conquer. We rule. There's no other way for us."

    11. "You have left your plains and valleys and made this bold venture. So it was in the beginning. You have made me proud. Now you can rest."

    These were the voyages...

I've agreed with this sentiment since beta, but Cryptic hasn't agreed yet (maybe it will get somewhere this time). It's been brought up periodically by other posters as well.

I know. It makes no sense :(

Back in CB, when first encountering the DSE battle-door I thought they were going to be built into the focus of major event battles - maybe even PvP gateways - rather than the only form of 'wandering monster' encounters in the game.

There should be encounters with smaller, individual patrols and raiding parties:(

    IWhat I *wish* we had:

    Yes... that would be nice.
Increasing the complexity of the Exploration structural madlibs and adding the possibility of random Exploration encounters - and tossing in a few full scripted ones, even Episodes that show up from an encounter - would go at least some way towards getting there.

    1. I've had that happen maybe twice. You must have rotten luck if this is happening often enough to get annoyed about.

    2. Try paying attention to where the DSE's are instead of flying blindly towards a system, you can avoid this every time. I know, I do.

    3. Again, your luck must be terrible. I avoid almost every one of those kinda of ship-jacks, it's not hard. Full speed in one direction and they can't whip back around on you.

    4. Are you really staring at the map that long? I've never had it happen while looking at the map...

    5. ...this on the other hand, I have had happen enough to note, because I was stupid and forgot to turn the mission in before I left the zone.

    6. Again, this is largely due to sucky piloting, but those DSE's can be clever *******s occasionally.

Seriously, all I do is what where I fly, and I've got it to where 95% of the time, if I'm going into a DSE, it's because I wanted to.

Perhaps you complete the first "Defend Sector X" mission, then after that, the enemies don't seek you out anymore, but you can still chase them down and engage them if you so desire?

I'm happy for you that you are so proud of your skills in avoiding DSEs. That's quite an accomplishment, indeed, perhaps even worthy of its own accolade. Here's a question for you: would a toggle for those of us who are either too slow or too stupid to avoid DSEs and/or just plain sick of dealing with them will affect you adversely in any way?

Not in the least, I'm simply saying that it's not a real issue with a bit fancy flight and not something the dev's should focus on dealing with at he moment.

Once they fix the obnoxious flagship mobs that always seem to spawn right on top of you when you zone into a DSE, they won't even be worth fretting about. No needless damage on higher difficulties, simple and clean warp-out if you get sucked in.

So, I logged into the game for the first time today. Here's what happened.

I pressed the J key to see where I needed to go to get started on The Long Night...

    Then I saw IT coming...

    I tried to get away...

    Too late...

    DSE'd!

All within, oh, about seven seconds.

So. I ask again: how about a No DSE toggle?

Yes, I've seen there is a 'Diplomatic Immunity' thing coming. Can anyone tell me what it does?

I team with Mayhem a lot, every day I am in STO actually. I swear he has a "kick me" sign tacked to the back of his ships, he gets DSE'd that often.

What I love is getting DSE-jacked, havign to hit not ONE but TWO! buttons to extract myself from said DSE only to end up back in sector space........and blow up because there was a fracking Armada parked on the spawn point.

If the Devs cant figure out how to move the spawn points, or give us a way to get away without getting blow'd up.......then they are not trying very hard.............

So... how about that 'No DSE toggle'? Hmm?

this treead makes for good entertainment.

But lets see I am back to the game for a couple of weeks playing a lot and I got pulled in against my will exactly once because I didn't pay attention.

Seriously its not that hard and also toggle the option to keep you moving during convos avoids the contacting starfleet one.

Glad that you are amused! Seriously, it warms the cockles of my heart that I've been able to entertain you. And I'm just downright ecstatic that it's so easy for you to avoid these things (except for that one time). Unfortunately, not all of us are as abundantly gifted as you. Some of us - poor pathetic excuses for human beings that we are - just don't possess the unidirectional awareness and resistance to tediousness required to avoid these things quite so easily.

So, please, don't stand in the way of our enjoyment of the game, limited though it may be by our pitiable sensorial deficiencies. You can be a rainbow - not a painbow!

Why would the Feds just let giant fleets roam around their space? It is funny to watch players go around and run away from DSEs when in reality, a 45 ship fleet of Klingons by a Fed planet would be a very serious event.

Plus, I feel the Kingons would cloak their fleet if they were going to launch what amounts to an invasion of Fed space. They just really make no sense. DSEs should be in their OWN territory, patrolling their turf.

I am all for deep space encounters but they should be creative and fun. Why do I have to come back to my ship burning because I grabbed a beverage or drained Godzilla?
