The first thing you should do is explain exactly what happens. Use screenshots if necessary.

You don't click on the patch button patching is auomatic if the game
    1. you have an account that is authorized to play
    2. the patcher can connect to the patch server. (e is not being blocked by firewall/antivurus, router or ISP)

Server has not been down but sound like you do not have an account that is authorized to play the game. Not a demo account or a full paid subscription account.

how come the patch is such a larger file-like size i.e. 1700mb and 11 gb?

Because the game when fully installed is around 10 gig. also there has beeen several upgrade patches since the intial installer was created.

Sorry, but for some unkown reason (probably DRM or user tracking), Cryptic is forcing everyone to use their launcher. They are not providing a completely patch version for download, and they are not offering alternative methods for download. The mosly likely cause is a major problem with the server-software and/or network. The problem has been ongoing for over 2 weeks now, with no end in sight.

There are some other potential causes, though most of these are smoke and mirror attempts and fixing the problem rather than a real fix:

It's not unknown. Performance and reliability.

There haven't been any particularly major issues with it lately.

The 30 days is not a free trial but a bonus for setting up a subscription. If you use credit card or paypal you are not charged for the subscription until the end of the 30 days. if you cancel before then end of the 30 days you are not charged at all.

if you use a gametime card because those items can not be refunded the 30 days is added to the time on the card. ie 30 days timecard plus 30 day bonus equals 60 days before you have to enter another timecard to play.

so what you're saying is, that in addition to the 10gigs i've already downloaded on my hard drive i have to upload an additional 11 gigs of a patch in order to play this game again?

patching is done by looking at your system and downloading and patching the files on your system that have changed. so while a patch may say large file downloaded it may not downlaod all of the files. also the files download are compress and the size shown is the uncompress size.

I am very new to this and I was letting the patch run it's course and after about 2 1/2 hours all I could get out of it was almost 23% of the patch. I am on a laptop does that matter? Is there any way to contact the people that run this game?

No. The numbers in the patcher don't mean what you think they mean.

Patching is done on port 7255 if that port is being throddled or filtered it will affect the download. You can try using the patch by proxy option in the launcher option. Don't worry about losing what you have patched . even those the patcher inidcated it is starting at 0% it is actual 0% of what you have left to download. It remembers what it has already downloaded.
