How many times have you seen someone ask a question then someone answers it and says "you should get to know your game lore." I don't know if it's just me or what, but I've seen it too many times to count and frankly it disturbs me.
Star Trek is its own entity unlike any others. Its grown from a cheesy scifi show (the best if you ask me) to a living breathing mass of movies, spin offs, novels, and more. It was established long ago and has grown to what it is today. The stories and history within Star Trek are a result of this. Treaties, Wars, Characters bios and history are just a small part of this ever expanding entity. If anything it is Star Trek History and not some game lore that was just made up for the release of a game (no matter how good such a game is).
I'm just tired of someone referring to things that has happened (such as trouble with tribbles, the romulan war, or even little spin offs of episodes) as if they are things that were thought up for the game because they are not. It's not lore, its history.

I can't be the only one who feels this way, am I?
I think I know what you are trying to say but the community defines it as the same thing. This is simple case of semantics.
look if you have not seen every single article on the game, read the book, and memorized every part of the path to 2409 then you should not post on the forums, learn the game's lore.
Lore is fine, it helps with the storyline. But STO pretty much gives players not really affiliated with Star Trek to get involved.
But there needs to be more, like getting to know the races and understanding their cultures more. And Cryptic is doing a fine job with it regarding the Undine and the Iconians.

This. I'm just flabbergasted at the amount of posts I see citing the age of a ship, or how it fits into this tier or that tier ... when if any of those posters had bothered to read, pay attention to, and mull over the STO timeline, they'd realize that these "old" ships aren't old ships at all. They're brand new, top of the line, 25th Century MODULAR ships that captains can design to their own tastes. So it LOOKS like a Constitution or a Stargazer or a Defiant ... but it's not the same thing Kirk or Sisko flew. Inside it's a 25th Century ship.
And this is explained in the GAME'S LORE.
I'm also equally flabbergasted at the amount of people who completely dismiss the idea of having the Enterprise NX ship in the game ... but never ONCE make the same argument about the Raptor. Which is from that time period.

But that's where we differ. The whole modular thing and how they apparently LOVED 150 year old designs SO MUCH that they just had to ignore logic and make ships that look exactly the same but with modern tech... That's called "Idiotic Lore".
It's so stupid in fact I choose to ignore it.
They over explained the ship customization much like George Lucas has over explained the Force. There was no need, I know it's an MMO. I know there will be customization like vastly different uniforms. I know I'll respawn when I die. I don't need to know that TRIBBLE that's poorly written lore that just tries to cover up simple game mechanics.
I can ignore game mechanics. There's no need to explain why there can be a U.S.S. LOLCATS. Just give me good stories. I'll suspend my disbelief for certain things.

Oh really? Then why did I find "Kirk was here - hit it and quit it" carved in the hull inside the ladies bathroom on my Constitution light cruiser? HMMMM?:p

this is not a laughing matter, if you have not memorized memory alpha, and you can't name all of the rules of acquisition backwards then your not a star trek fan, and you need to get out of here. get out now before I nerve pinch you. :D
Yeah exactly. And more frustrated at ignorance then mad.
Oh. Alright. But i still see it as people quoting canon, and when they talk about game lore its.....game lore. You know like the ship customization thing.
From my OED, these definitions seemed most applicable but if anyone has ever used an OED, you know the definitions get a bit long with lots of research to back it up. Lore is actually the better term for fiction, history would apply to

Zodi as usual is SPOT on here. If you don't know your LORE, you're not going to be able to advance in th new Diplomacy XP system! They ask trivia questions. And they're no joke. Really hard questions. Like is there a stable wormhole in the bajoran system? Who were the four species that formed the federation? Why is Wolf 359 so important? They're not playing around here people. You're either well versed in STO's game lore, and thus you'll totally PWN in Diplomacy ... or you're some WoW-playing Noob fresh off the Tutorial with no idea that you just listened to Sylar from Heroes guide you through the entire thing and then say he wants to be your daddy.

Seconded.
Er.....whats the difference between lore and history?
Also, i've never once even seen the phrase 'game lore' on these forums in 2 years. Isnt it always canon this' and 'canon that'
lore is fine, its just not game lore

Think he's mad because we called it "game" lore and not "trek" lore. As if these things were created for the game.

Learn one thing. On the internetz, you get nowhere by writing ****ed-off posts. Be polite, and write with a calm tone.
Here's a hint.. whenever you're posting, think that you're Spock.
