Is Sto seriously going F2P sometime? I bought the lifetime sub the day it was available! I would hate to think I wasted all that money. if it goes F2P this time next year, then it wont be such a big deal!
well it is hard to tell. they have hinted to it by supporting a DDO / LOTRO model but nothing is official. if they were going to go that way you would still get your moneys worth because the DDO / LOTRO model is a hybrid. it has free to play but it is capped off. then you have three options.
1. free to play: you have the option to buy content from the C-store.
2. subscribed: you get all of the content like missions, and areas , and you would get C-store points each month as long as your are subscribed ( DDO does 500 a month I think )
3. Lifetime membership: you get all mission, and areas for life, and you get points each month for life.
so it mite not be that bad.
as for them going I wish they would just tell us the truth because if they are going that route they still have a lot of work to do, ( double the amount of mission total ) and I'm willing to bet that if we knew what was going on someone us mite give ideas on how to make it better.
I bought a lifetime for LOTRO back in Jan, and it went F2P this month! I see. thats nice. We will have to wait and see what happens.
well going to free 2 play can be a fearful thing. a few months ago I was ignorant on what the DDO model was like, and I feared going free to play, but when I took time to learn about it. it was not as bad as I thought, and in fact I support it. look at DDO, it was failing, but it turned around after going free to play, and I think the same would happen here, but first they need to double to amount of content.

I think the DDO model is pretty smart. When DDO came out I purchased it and played for about 5 months.. So Turbine made around $75 off me in 5 months of subs.
Later, when they went F2P I decided to go back and give it a try. I saw all the great items, races, classes, dungeons, etc... for sale and purchased a number of things. I spent around $150 on the D-Store items. I played for about 3 weeks this time and found other things to entertain me more. But Turbine made $150 in less than a month off me.
I would have had to subscribe for 10 months for them to make the same money without the store.
Its pretty inevitable at this point but theres no concrete facts that they are.
It most certainly is not inevitable. Look at WW2OL, PotBS, SWG, PlanetSide... they've all been out for while, and with the exception of WW2OL, they've all had massive server consolidation, and not one of them is F2P. The ONLY games that have gone form a sub model to an F2P model were DDO and LOTRO... that's TWO for those that are counting.
Two out of dozens is definitely not evidence of an inevitability.
For crying out loud, spreading rumors like this should be grounds for a ban.

Global Agenda went from subscription to F2P w/ MT on June 26th 2010. So that makes 3.
Free to Play isn't a bad thing, the Corprate greed that goes along with most MMO's which you are accustomed too, however, is.
Guild Wars stands as proof that a MMO can run very successfully over many years. Without the need to charge anything more then the cost's of the disks - or a C-store for that matter... they lanuched with a full game, with varried quest's, missions, advanced storyline With fully acted cut sceenes, and a but load of end game content.... they have updated and added content on par with WoW through the whole life of the game. they relased expansions blow for blow with WoW (each of which can be played as it's own game without needing the basic or other expansions) . - - 4-5 years later they still have a large and loyal fan base. without ever charging a monthly fee, without charging anything for regularly added new content, and without reducing their project development team.
STO is as instanced as GW is, has a better known brand name, and is 4 years younger then GW is - and has less players on the server @ any given time then they do. I bought a lifetime sub here expecting that i would play this untill GW2 came out, and the cost would be equeal to what i normally spend on games over that stretch of time - needless to say i played STO for about 2 months and haven't loaded it since. first and last time i pay to play a sub game - there's something to be said about treating your players with respect, instead of as piggy banks.
I've hung around forums hoping for news that the devs here would get their act together and get this game up to snuff, and I hate to say it, since i like many of their other game, but Cryptic screwed the pooch with this one by chassing $$$$$ signs instead of player satisfaction.

Very smart those Turbine fellows.

we want the game to be successful, and we must be able to feed our devs.
why it is just a discussion, are we not allowed to have a discussion?
Sure, but the use of the term inevitable is a bit misleading, as is the title of the thread. This is not a discussion, it's rumor-mongering.
that is true, but i don't think they should be banned for it.
I didn't either, for the first 30 or 40 of them... maybe I'm just tired.
