That's right: I think ships should take kinetic damage when colliding with big rocks (and other items such as ships, starbases, planets, whatever) in space. Obviously the magnitude should depend on the speed and relative mass of the ship vs the rock.
Admittedly this might not make it as a priority #1 item for the dev team, but I have to say it kind of breaks the mood when my ship suddenly stops on a dime with no damage when running into an asteroid at full impulse... either the rock should move or my poor little escort should be flattened.
Bouncing off based on the angle/force would be super cool, but that sounds like a lot more work with physics and whatnot that might be outside of the capabilities of the engine (right now I'm pretty sure the items in space never move except ships)

thats what we got deflectors for...warping into them is a diffrent story though
You're right.... lots of rocks in space. Too many in fact. Ever wondered how planets in STO could sustain life when there's enough rock in orbit to destroy all life about a thousand times over, which - by the way - the laws of gravity should constantly be pulling down. Much to the dismay of any life there.... but no... they just hang there and it looks silly.
In fact... remove 99% of the asteroids in the game. They are only in the way and don't do anything for the game. I know know ... fly through the asteroids to get to the base. I get it.
I don't think the engine supports physics. In fact I am quite sure of it. But I would love an achievement that you would get when you hit one of those darn things (which everyone does - you know - frequently). It should proclaim in Archer's immortal words from the Enterprise pilot episode: "Great... you scratched the paint."

YES!!!!!! Better deflectors should allow you to ignore damage from larger objects! Excellent point!
yea becasue you know for fact that 20+ years in tech advancments wouldnt allow them to do that, in a game about a fictional TV show
yeah... but... ze cannon said so!
maybe
or something
i duno whatevs... Bumping into rocks = BAM!

Arachne
Or the immortal undocking scene in Galaxy Quest.
@OP: No. This game isn't a hardcore space sim.
