Has anyone at STO given any thought to creating a live voice chat so that fleets, teamates & others can actually communicate in real time? It's always difficult to communicate to a team in the middle of a battle, having to stop fighting to type in an urgent message (which usually results in your death & subsequent respawn)... specifically in tough mission like Terradome & Infected.
With all the existing alternatives, I'd just as soon that Cryptic focus on the game and leave voice comms up to the individual user/fleet. There are many voice comm soultions available (Vent, Team Speak, Mohawk, etc).
In games that I've played that provided internal comms, there are always issues (player-side). It' becomes one more headache for support. Factor in that even when provided, a majority of users will still prefer (and use) third-party voice applications.
I seriously doubt that there is an active fleet out there that can't find or afford a third-party solution. Voice servers can be self-hosted or leased (for pennies a slot). And third-party voice applications each offer a wide array of features that suit any comms requirements.
Who knows. Maybe someday. But for now I'd rather see Cryptic focus on content.

Yes they have.
Prior to closed beta one of the devs explained why they decided not to create their own integrated chat system. And even went on to basically say - It isn't going to happen.
As much as I'd like to see a Voice over internet program with in Star Trek Online, I'd rather wait for them to fix other bugs or release new content first.
Having played D&D Online, which has a VOIP, while your teamed, I do enjoy it and I hope that the feature eventually makes it into Star Trek Online. Call it a Comm system if you want..

I agree have a comm system would be wicked cool but there are more importing things for them to be working right now.
I can give a very long list as to what is wrong with them, but the number one issue would be communication in STFs. By having 3rd party VOI protocol programs handle the team voice aspect you start to run into the problems of "group requirements". ie, you need to have this specific VOI program inorder to join this group regardless of how experienced you may be in the mission. I myself have actually been a victim of this type of mentality, I have run Infected at least 10 times and was booted from a group once it was known I don't have teamspeak.
Another problem is harddrive space. Each of the VOI programs take up a certain amount of memory on the harddrive. Realistically speaking it's not practical to download each and every single VOI program out there onto the harddrive. Too much memory would be taken up and would start to affect system performance.

Same, I miss not having team voice chat immensely.
Just makes a better overall community b/c you get to know more peeps.

Can't pug with that.
I'd rather be one click away from being able to talk to anyone in any PvP game I join or any group I join.

As to the size, I find them both to be pretty small applications. D/l'ed, installed, and setup in just a few minutes each.
Vent installed = 4.97MB
TS installed = 27.4MB

pugs wouldn't get any benefit so no, probably wouldn't cover 99% (PvP)
