Hey all, I've never been a big pvp fan in MMO's but since i reached max level I ran out of things to do!
I'm curious as to how you think STO pvp fairs in relation to other MMO's, i've only ever pvp'd on STO so i'm not really sure how to rate it..It can be alot of fun but i find it quite repetative, i prefer space pvp battles but there are only a couple of maps and game types....which i find limited...or is that normal for MMO pvp?
I don't get that statement at all we are just regular players who wanna pvp that plays pvp, we do maybe get abit obssive about new builds and have more fun trying out skills but other then that whats the differance?

Some pvpers are also ganking - gate/spawn campers who take delight in tormenting the new players. I think he was refering to those type of pvp players.
Otherwise I like STO pvp very much and have found it the easiest (compared to EvE and CoX) to get into and enjoy with just a little bit of effort involved to learn a few tricks to be competitive.
I suppose I was purposely a bit vague because I didn't want to insult anyone or start a flame war/argument. There are some pretty cool people who only play PvE and the same can be said for the group who prefer PvP. . .but the sort of personality that PvP tends to draw over PvE are the sort that I do not often enjoy playing with. Having experienced AoC where every other post was an insult to PvE'rs or an epic about how awesome the poster was. . .coupled with the in game attitudes. . .It kinda perma turned me off of PvP. It's not nearly so bad here, but it still exists. It's simply the fact that those who have self esteem issues and feel the need to assuage it by being super competitive tend to gravitate more towards PvP than PvE.
Take a look at these forums. How many topics do you see asking what sort of build is the most fun to play? Nobody asks that, they all want to know what is the best. . .and that is mostly driven by PvP. PvP even here tends to focus on numbers and rankings and who is better than whom. That competition tends to draw the gankers, the elitests and those who's only goal is to win at any cost. By NO means is even portion of the PvP playerbase in STO falling into this category, most people here are cooll. But the adage about bad apples tends to apply here, it only takes a few people to ruin the fun.
I have a young son who's seven years old. He watches Star Trek with me and likes to watch me play. I was in PVP the other night when several klingons made a few comments referring to the Galaxy X and the cloaking issue and how it wasn't helping me any. (There's some ill will about the Galaxy X AND the Feds having cloak)
After I kept getting my butt handed to me a few times, some were mocking and one made the comment about my ship getting/being ganged anal TRIBBLE.
People can be very competitive, but I think "some" people in PVP take it a tad too far. Just my opinion.

Yup, agreed. STO does seem to have the lowest percentage of dillholes involved in PVP of any MMO I've experienced. Not entirely sure why, perhaps it's because there is no leaderboard etc, and many of the die hard dillholes are not comfortable existing in such a relatively casual PVP environment.
Whatever the case, the socially and developmentally challenged seem to be largely absent from STO PVP. Hope it lasts.
yeah the low lifes are a bit harder to find, the competition however is still very much alive. It can turn even the best of us into crazed blood thirsty. . .Klingons! :P
But the adage about bad apples tends to apply here, it only takes a few people to ruin the fun.
What you fail to either realize or acknowledge is that by and large, the rest of the PvP community hates those "bad apples" just as much or even more than you do. The stereotype of "PvPer=douchebag" is just as ridiculous as "PvEer=n00b" and it does little good to perpetuate either stereotype.
I would also point out that it is not your right to decide what other people are allowed to find fun - enjoying competition and finding excitement in optimization are not exclusive to "having fun", and neither you nor anyone else has legitimate ground to assert otherwise.

I did not state otherwise on any of your issues. . .what you quoted from me states it rather clearly, it's only a few people in the PvP community. The stereotyping comes from those bad apples who need to put themselves on a higher level than those around them, not me. Nothing i said has anything to do with people PvP'ing for fun. the only PvP I do is for fun, and I know quite a few others who do as well. Don't go out of your way to pick a fight by implying things that were not stated, that was exactly what i wanted to avoid.

No. . .no I'm not. I am making relevant statements based on my experience in computer games as they pertain to PvP content. There is a difference between commenting on a trend and making generalizations. Unless that is your looking at me to cite specific cases, but it is not my nature to call people out.

Actually, all "trends" are generalizations, especially when the identification of the trend itself is based on a subjective interpretation. You chose to identify "trends" such as:
It's simply the fact that those who have self esteem issues and feel the need to assuage it by being super competitive tend to gravitate more towards PvP than PvE.
Indeed, you chose to answer the OP's question about "maps and game types" with a commentary about the player base. In fact, you even said that your past experiences have:
Meh, I wrote all that up but had decided against posting, then I saw Roach's post and made the mistake of clicking the post button. I simply declined to comment on the game mechanics side and instead compared my PvP experience between STO and the other MMO's I've participated in. I'll be happy to step aside and let you comment on the game style, go ahead.
The game system of Star Trek Online PvP is well behind every single MMO I have ever played. The big issue I have with STO PvP is that the competition is over exactly - nothing. In every other MMO I have ever played - beginning with Ultima Online in 1997 - PvP was over property or ownership of something - usually territory. One would think such a dynamic would play perfectly into the storyline of STO - but alas it is not a priority with Cryptic right now.
The result is, PvP is a competition between players over nothing specific in game, so the competition spills into everywhere else to make up the difference. Whether in-game chat, the forums, some mythical ladder system, whatever - Cryptic has left it to the PvP players to figure out what the competition is over.
That, by default, makes the PvP system in STO total and complete TRIBBLE. When the prize is virtual instead of tangible - things like ego fill the virtual space. One only hopes PvP will soon represent the competition over some specific in-game tangible property, but until then PvP is basically tactical and pointless.
But I do think the tactical aspect of PvP in STO is fun - I still pay my subscription to PvP in STO in the hopes that one day the game will become more strategic.

I do agree that we need OBJECTIVES, besides trying to be the highest dammage dealer. C&H is ok but not enough to give a sense of accomplishment. The sector sweeping runs in Eve were always fun, attacking enemy bases, etc etc is something that pvp in STO needs.
I kinda hoped that STO would become a PVE game center with a PVP wrapper. Meaning that casual(er) players could enjoy the storyline aspect of the game, exploration and diplomacy and the "war" it covers, while the pvp'ers could be out in the fringe sectors fighting the bigger "war" defended the frontlines, oppossing fleets or just wandering the lawless areas of space attacking the enemy where they are.
Such a thing does not seem beyond the the Dev's and could even have a series of simple pvp driven missions to help the casual player slowly make thier way in to such sectors.
Is it too much to ask for a mission where I must compete against another player for the chance to contact a new species? If STO could ever mix PvP and storyline - I would spot myself.
I simply declined to comment on the game mechanics side and instead compared my PvP experience between STO and the other MMO's I've participated in.
Thank you for your clarification. That the gameplay experience is largely defined by the player population is certainly worth noting. I agree that many people have commented that their attachment to their in-game friends (or lack thereof) plays a larger part in their enjoyment of PvE or PvP content than the mechanics themselves.
Is it too much to ask for a mission where I must compete against another player for the chance to contact a new species? If STO could ever mix PvP and storyline - I would spot myself.
You know, once in an interview a long time ago, I remember somebody commenting that STO would feature some sort of "Competitive PvE" mechanic where players would, for instance, compete to deliver more medical supplies to an alien planet in order to gain their favor.
Thus far, the closest thing I've seen is the Borg Hunt warzone (Ker'rat), which consists of 2-3 UFO farmers doing the "PvE", and a bunch of other players free-for-alling it at the spawn point.
Is it too much to ask for a mission where I must compete against another player for the chance to contact a new species? If STO could ever mix PvP and storyline - I would spot myself.
Well - I wouldn't go quite that far....but.......
Very interesting - have to kill off another player (not of your own fleet) in order to advance to that mission.
Very interesting - have to kill off another player (not of your own fleet) in order to advance to that mission.
The though twas pvp linked missions.
Two different (unknown to each other) pvp players who are competing for the same planetary species to contact, subjigate, etc. Klink vs Fed or a house battle for the honor.
It could be done at random when two oppossed players try to enter a planetary system, when a player enters a system with an enemy player already in it (could be started by the ol' " Captain we are being attacked!! Beam back" or just controled by the server where it matches opponents together.
After the combat on ground or in space (could be a choice option) the winner gets the exploration, diplomancy, etc mission to run and acrues honor or prestige for thier faction.
PvP storyline missions - its an idea - may be possible.
Overall its better than in most games I've played.
In a lot of other games, you don't PVP until you are max level, because you will be completely useless until then. In STO I played 2 characters to 45 primarily via PVP, a KDF and a Fed and it was very fun (of course the low level queues are way too slow these days to do that again). And I could enter the queues at any point during my tier and be competitive.
I also like the fact that you don't need to switch up your entire build for PVE vs. PVP. If it works in PVP, chances are it will work very well in PVE.
Balance is always a frustrating thing when you're on the short end, but that happens endlessly in MMOs as balance changes back and forth.
Of course there are the immature players out there, and every game has them. But that is what the ignore feature is for. USE IT. Its sad how many people end up ignored, but it has reached a plateau for me as I don't need to ignore people very often now. And that means the chat in matches doesn't bother me now.

Sounds pretty awesome, Roach! Gets my vote.
To the OP I have no other MMO to compare STO PvP to, however, I've encountered only a handful of knuckleheads and they are mostly amusing IMO.
I primarily play fed, although I haven't logged on in a long while to pvp. Tribble server and other things kept me occupied in my play time.
I've had DBs just criticize me for playing an eng/fleet escort, or for beating them with my assault cruiser setup. One of them was very serious and reported me, claiming that "you can't do that much damage and have that kind of survivability in an escort! I'm reporting you for hacking!" Good times, good times, I just smiled ( ) back at him and wished him good luck in his endeavor to report me.
I've had other players just message me afterwards after we fought 1v1 for a long time. GG man, that was tough. Win or lose, it was fun for me. One klingon even friended me, after a close match that I won, saying it's nice to know where good fed players are.
The former are clearly in the minority; I've met more decent people who just like to pvp than I've met complete ******s.
To all the friendly pvp'ers out there, see you in the matches! (Although probably not until i'm VA1 in Holodeck. They made damn good pve missions this next patch)
EDIT: This has been my experience as a 75% PuG player and 25% w/ fleet. My solo (pug) plays are purely C and H, my fleet likes to run both C and H and arenas.
I find this game to be very unique when it comes to PVP because it has 2 forms of PVP: Space and Ground.
The Space PVP, is the more unique type of PVP that I've seen since I haven't played the more space/futuristic games such as Star wars, or other games that I know of but their names escape me. The Ship combat is fun. Fast paced most of the time. And stratigic sometimes as well. If I were to compare it, I'd compare it to City of Heroes/Villians or Champions Online with the way you can move quickly (depending on the ship) Though a battle, and how your briidge officer powers are so diverse.
The Ground PVP, how ever, is the less unique. It's very FPS (First person shooter). I'd almost compare it to Team Fortress 2. Only less zany and you don't have to be in First person zoomed in. Otherwise if you look at each of the "classes" in Team Fortress 2, you can probobly build a similar character in STO as either a Tactical officer, Engineer, or Science Officer. Weapons are diverse, sure, but not really as diverse as they probobly could be. And the ground abilities are not really always as useful as I'd hope. And sure the abilies are "customizable" but yet still restricted with in the Kits you find the abilities in. Not nearly as customizable as it is in space. There's also a HUGE kill count difference between space and ground. In the ground combat PVP you need 40..that's right 40 kills.. And unlike in space, there's no other type of Queue PVP map that doesn't require kills. Something to think about...
Overall, the PVP in STO is very fun depending on which form you like. But it does lack the Open Areas, as well as a more tangable goal at the end of a match, or goals for what your doing while in a match. Sure you are supposed to kill/blow up your opponents, but what about those capture points in Cap and Hold, or the Enemy Mine. Also, what's the point of capturing Borg Nodes? Sure you get something at the END of the "match" but you don't get any buffs, or any real insentive to capture those points beyond that end reward. No buffs happen to any side. No benifits.
I'd love to see the Devs one day turn to each of the Instanced PVP Zones, weither Queue or Open and redefine those zones to make the PVP Experience in them more fun both for the Casual PVPer and the Veteran "Elitist".

If fleets get their own starbases / fortresses, and the ability to set up raids with other starbases in a battle over the other guys' resources, I would like pvp so much more.
If my fleet are getting attacked by a klingon fleet, I would gladly warp in and help secure our base.
