Especially when you're up against potential participants like this...
Considering he stated he's not with CBS or Cryptic
people say alot of things. personally I don't buy it. when companies 'give permission' for someone to do stuff like this theres a reason for it. especially when that permission isn't required, as in this case.
Not saying your wrong, nor am I sure why your worried? So what if it is cryptic getting feed back? That's a good thing surely?
because if it is cryptic and they are getting feedback in a manner like this they would be doing so dishonestly by claiming to be something or someone they aren't? it would make me wonder what else they were doing or capable of doing if this is the case.
But I would point out the Gentleman has provided more than enough material for to enable anyone to do some serious checking that could blow this wide open if it was false.
ehh not that i'm saying hes 'fake' per se but you'd be suprised what you can get around if you put some thought and effort into it.
I don't believe it is fake
fake? no neither do I. but I do believe theres more going on here than hes saying
there are players who think this is just another idiotic attempt by Cryptic/Atari Marketing or want something else in return.
its more common than you might think. wouldn't be the first time its happened.
I am interested in MMORPGS, virtual worlds, and games in the virtual and aspects of the interactions that take place there. CBS and Cryptic were kind enough to allow me to undertake this research project, for which I am grateful.
see, the thing is you don't need their permission to research anything or to get peoples opinions on a game. which is the reason I find this whole thing a little odd. they couldn't legally stop you from doing so, so....like I said. fishy.
LOL to those who think this is fake or not who he says he is, maybe you should actually read the original post and click the links. You will then realize that you are a moron for posting such things. But hey i do love to see people making idiots out of themselves
means absolutely nothing. as I said, theres ways of convincing people you are someone you aren't. not saying he is but I can think of quite a few people that have done it in the past.
Umm, you did read the part where he stated he's NOT employed by either CBS or Cryptic studios, right?
and my ex claimed she wasn't married when I met her. whats your point? doesn't mean thats true
Good Point! I'd actually love to get the input of those under age 18, however, when one conducts research like this, in my case through my university, they have to get permission of the research board that overseas the activity to protect the participants, and to study underage populations means I would need the consent of their guardian, which would be very difficult to obtain in an online environment,
which doesn't mean much unless you're planning to put all this in a book and sell it or something to that effect. theres plenty of places online that don't worry about under 18 people taking their surveys
you people do what you want, but i'd be cautious with this.
Oh give up. Stop being so paranoid. Let people believe what they want in regards to Dr. Otto and move along. As a survey contributor I actually don't care who he is or who he works for. I was happy to help. Now please go away and stop trying to start trouble to prove that your paranoid delusions are real (whether or not they are.)

who's being paranoid? frankly I don't particularly care. now whether or not this is legit or not it doesn't change the fact that companies DO do this kind of thing. nobody is trying to 'cause trouble' the fact is if this is atari or cryptic or cbs or whoever else doing market research and painting it as something else you should be concerned. not because of the research but because it would be pretty clear proof they wouldn't be a company you could trust. would you really want to do business with someone that did things like that? I wouldn't. i'm just saying be careful
I hope that cryptic reviews your findings and takes the feedback to heart. This game has a lot of potential and I am a fan of it, but so far the developers seem disinterested in the feelings of those they are marketing the game to. I do not have many complaints but those that I do have are rather large. I am not sure if I have ever had a support ticket answered, including cstore purchases not received. I have played the PTS and checked to see when the Dev's are supposed to be online, but have never seen one. There are no representatives of the game who are regularly online, many MMO's will actually recruit players to fill this role. Those folks act as moderators, disputes are resolved by them, complaints and suggestions accepted and passed along.
The biggest failure of the game is the basis of your survey, community, there isn't much here and the developers do not seem to be willing to do anything to help drive community. Fleet/clan support is nearly nonexistent, there is no fleet v fleet, no fleet ranking, no player ranking, no fleet held territory or anything to justify the existence of a fleet other than to chit chat or do team stf's. Teaming can be done without clans, clans are there to build community. No contests, no events, no anything except for a chat box and very limited PVP content for community building.

Hmmm,
There is alot here, but essentially it seems that you think I may secretly be working for Atari or CBS or Cryptic and that this research is some attempt by them to gather information.
This is utterly untrue. I do not, in any way, shape or form work for any company of a any kind any where. I work for East Stroudsburg University, in East Stroudsburg, PA, in the Media Communication and Technology department.
It seems that one reason you have come to this erroneous impression is that you find it odd that I obtained permission from CBS and Cryptic to undertake this study, and thus, since I have this permission, there must be some quid pro quo between myself and Cryptic or CBS or Atari. There is not. As I have written I do share my results with Cryptic, not because I have to, but in the hopes that the responses people have been kind enough to offer are in some way helpful to Cryptic in making a better game, which would seem to be of help to those who have generously taken the time to take the surveys.
Also, it would seem only polite to ask a game company for permission to undertake a study about and in their game world, and since I do plan to publish this material in academic papers, provide forum members access to results, and possibly a write book and publish it with an academic or mainstream publisher, it is always best to be upfront and honest about ones intentions from the beginning.
You are welcome to your opinions, but I am who I say I am.
Have an excellent day,

Professor: Any estimates on when we can see the results?
Hmmm,
Well, I need to finish stage one of the research, which I am hoping to have done by December. Then I need to write up the results, submit it to a journal, go through their editorial process, and when this is done, see it in print, at which time I will provide links to the article or articles. Therefore, it could be awhile till the results are available.
Now you may ask, why not just provide a link to the data now?
The answer is, that were I to do so, I would most likely taint the responses of those who take surveys in the future, and of the interviews I will conduct, and thus damage the entire research project, thus nullifying the use of the data, and rendering all the time the respondents and myself have put into the project in the first place.

Postponed this way too long. I've done the first, so I figured I should do the second survey as well. Just hope it's not too late yet and my answers will still be of any use.
I'd really love to take the survey, but seem to be running into technical issues. My first attempt (at this one) timed out on the third page and now I get no response from server I am pretty sure this is due to my country's crappy internet, so I would like to know if there is any other way/form that I can complete it in?
Also is completing the first one still of relevance or have you finished with that data?
I am actually currently doing my Honours research project on gaming addiction and psychological effects, it is just a literature review at this level, but I'd love to see how you are going about this research and to help you expand in the game research area. I am very tired of the absurd amounts of papers out there going after violence in games compared to those looking at community development, improved spacial perception etc...
I filled out the survey and hope you find my comments useful ...also hoping Cryptic find them useful (and constructive).
Having worked on extensive and detailed application go-lives as a techie, and being a fiction writer I really do appreciate the difficuties Cryptic are going through trying to please everyone.
Once again Doc I filled out your survey. Good luck with it.
To the conspiracy theorists out there...seriously...if Cryptic, Atari or CBS wanted to know how much we love/hate this game...there are enough people on this forum who have given their voice they can get the picture for free. Censored by moderators or not.
I am sure your going to insist that Georgetown University is in league with Cryptic, Atari and CBS also...because they have a course about Star Trek.
Many Doctors, Scientists, Astronauts and other fields do so because they were inspired by Star Trek. I guess Cryptic is paying them too, right?
Good luck again Doc. I hope my input serves you well.

I am conducting research about how Star Trek Online players perceive their interactions within STO, at present and in the future. The first phase of this research is in the form of online surveys/questionnaires, with interviews to be conducted in the future.
I have the permission of CBS, and Cryptic Studios to conduct this research; however, I do not work for either CBS or Cryptic Studios, in any capacity.
The overall plan is to publish the results of this research in various forms, such as academic papers, as well as potentially in book form.
The results will also eventually be shared with CBS and Cryptic, however, any and all material that potentially identifies a research participant will be removed prior to any and all forms of dissemination.

Hello,
I understand your reluctance to submit information over the internet, there are many scams and viruses, etc.
This however is not one of them.
This is a quote from the other thread about the first survey, (phase alpha) its #23 on page #3 of the thread...
He's legit. Many thanks to those of you who help him out.
Thanks to all who have posted and taken the survey thus far, a new one is in the works (and yes, I have shared some of the information you have all been kind enough to submit with Cryptic, and I hope it is useful to them)
