Must Be Doing Something Wrong

I have been playing for a short time. Now at Lieutenant Commander 8. I have a ship with several upgrades in engines, weapons and shields.

Every time I play and other players are in the same area, they all seem faster than me, even at lower ranks. When I played in one of the arenas, I only lasted about five seconds before blowing up.

I guess I do not understand the effects of each component on the ship and each skill set of the bridge crew?

Doing okay in the normal missions, not about to try the higher levels if the player vs player arena is an example.

A lot of times when there are other players in the same map, I lag behind and they do all the killing and I get to do nothing. I cannot find any manual or place where it explains the game system in detail.

Are you using Full Impulse? Hit Shift-R to use it. Other than that, for PVP, try using the ability "Reverse Shield Polarity". It will give you added protection from energy attacks.

What ship are you using? Escorts are the fastest. Cruisers are the slowest. Science ships are in the middle.

If you are talking about their speed when traveling from one spot in the map to another (not during battle) then they are probably using full impulse. To do this you have to press the button on top of the impulse bar. It only works when not under red alert.

Do not panic. This happens to everyone when dipping their toes into PVP for the first time. It takes awhile to get used to how PVP works and how to survive. Your experience is normal.

    Lt. Commander, using Escort Vessel,
I have enhanced impulse engines (MK IV), I set it to full impulse on the buttons on the lower edge of the screen. I also use the boost that lasts only a few seconds, but still cannot seem to catch up to some ships played by a player with a lower rank than me.

This is the speed in the map and not going from one system to another in the Galaxy Map, but in the system itself on the way to a planet or asteroids.

I am also trying to find better equipment, but have a hard time. Each vendor or cargo ship has a different load of items, so finding stuff is difficult.

As for equipment that is dropped when you blow up an enemy ship, this is often taken by the faster ship. So, I miss out on that too. I slowly have accumulated some stuff, but do not always know if it is good or not. I had three of the Dual Plasma Canons Mk IV, one being just a little better. I am not sure if Phasers, Disrupters, or Canon are what I need. I have a Beam weapon, A Dual Canon and a Quantum Torpedo in the fore. I have switched the aft several times and still have all three: Photon Torpedo Mk II, Photon Mine Launcher Mk II and another beam weapon. Of the two beam weapons I have, I think one is a plasma beam and the other is a disrupter beam. I think I sold hte Phaser beam. The Beam weapons have a better arc and therefore can more often shoot. Sometimes both the fore and aft can shoot. The game will not always allow me to put a weapon into a different weapon slot. I tried putting Canons in the aft and it would not allow it (box turns red).

Maybe I will buy a Phaser Beam and add that in the fore instead of the canons.

Got to find a better place to buy one though, or just get lucky and find one dropped by a destroyed ship.

Most all NPCs have a tendency to fight at 1/4 impulse. Players on the other hand, are quite random.

Unfortunately you'll find tons of people that run away in PvP. High speeds are usually a combination of things though like putting full power into engines, popping engine batteries, evasive maneuvers, some engines also have increased speed as well.

As for getting gear for yourself, it's probably easier to do the cluster exploration missions. You'll get badges from completing those missions that you can turn in for gear at the Earth spacedock.

Also if you plan on sticking with an escort, it's better to stick with dual cannons just so you can maximize the damage you deal. Again, you can get all of that stuff by turning in the exploration badges. You'll need to do the mission several times though as it rewards 75 badges per and that's roughly the cost of one ship weapon. Engines, shields and deflectors are quite a bit more though but it seems like weapons are your priority for now.

Dont worry. You get loot that is supposes to be yours, its not the fastest ship to the loot that gets it.
Btw when flying a escort rapid fire and dual heavy canons are your best friends.
For healing i would use hazard emitters and sciense team and engineering team. In battle just push F1 to target your self first unless you want to help others by targeting them.
On a lt com escort i would use in the front either two dual heavy canons and one torpedo or replace one canon with a beam bank. And remember if you really need to fly superfast for a little to get away to survive hit evasive manuvears and a engine battery.Btw when doing enemy encounters dont join a team, the only reason some "players" want you on they're team is so they can have you do all the killing while they take all the loot. Btw starbase 39 you can but commen weapons etc for you lt com ans com ship. And DS9 you can get commen weapons armor etc for you captain caracter just to help you in the start each time you lv up.

Btw when doing enemy encounters to lv up many players after killing those enemy ship will leave the encounter to sector space to find a new one to complete 3/3. Just hit M for map and use change instance. That way you can find one that has allredy started. When you reach lt com 7 you get a mission to go to celles system in regulus to pick up damar or what he is called that will take you to romulan space, and open up missions there.Hope this helps alittle , have to run to work now :)

What damage types? Have you allocated skill points? Right now it's just phaser/Disruptor at the start, but you get many many more.

Getting the right skills is fairly critical. Pick one damage type and stick with it, it'll pay off. For me, I've settled on 2 Dual Heavy Tetryon Cannons on my escort front, with 2 quantum torpedo launchers. The higher you go, the more skill points skills take... and polaron is fairly useless, and antiproton is just too expensive for my taste. Proton torpedos are nice, they recharge quickly, but I use 2 torpedo tubes, so my quantums cool down as fast as I can fire them. 3 DHC adn 1 faster torp could also probably work well. It's relatively hard to TRIBBLE up too much.

    Use. The. Exchange.

Escorts can keep enemies in their front facing, if you have no trouble keeping people in your front arcs, cannons in the front and turrets in the rear work wonderfully, they all hit at once. If you have issues turning, you may wish to use dual beam arrays in the front- you get more DPS than standard beams (but less than cannons) but the arc is wider, so your steering is a little less important.

Oops, I knew I forgot something!

At Commander 3, doing a bit better, getting used to some things. I now know where to get a lot of equipment. I actually forgot to check out the ship requisitions room, at the second level ship, a bit more and could not remember that this is where to get consoles and other equipment not found on the first floor.

I have rotated around with canons and beams weapons and seem to do the same for each. It seems, the more beam weapons you have, the more you get to use in a broadside, in case you cannot face the enemy all the time.

I also like the idea of having different types of weapons, plasma, phaser and so on.

I am finding it also difficult to collect badges of exploration. The 4th and 5th order do not seem accessible right now. I know where the areas are, but cannot get the actual mission despite talking to the right people.

I saw a listing in this forum that describes each, I will have to locate it again.

Thanks for all the help, it has given me a better idea what to llok for.

well you also need to know that some impulse engines work better on high and some work better on low power. Hyper impulse engines only work well on High engine power settings while combat impulse engines have the exact oposite =]

Check your power levels. Full impulse throws 100 power to engines, but higher engine power also makes you faster in normal impulse. Higher weapon power kills faster.
