Cryptic Patcher Fixes

Undoubtedly, there are many people out there having the same issue I am: getting the game to patch. There are some basic things to do if you're having issues with the patcher, and this post is meant for suggestions and fixes.

PLEASE DO NOT POST HELP REQUESTS.
IF YOU FOUND A SOLUTION, ADD IT IN HERE.

Once again, if you post anything like, "I did this, what do I do," or any other useless gibberish that IS NOT a helpful hint or solution, your post will be deleted.

(The majority of the information here is a refined collection of methods from http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=61666.)

All of this amounts to troubleshooting, and as with any problem should go through 3 major steps: Observation, Analysis, Action. You may have to go through that cycle several times before you fix your problem.

First Steps to a Resolution:

1. Check connectivity
Run http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe to check ports. You should see something like this:
contacting nettest server..
Local IP@86.159.27.170
Ping 130.5 msec
Port 80:.. 228kb/sec 13kb/sec 322kb/sec 500
Port 80:.. 44kb/sec. 14kb/sec 550kb/sec 500
Port 443:. 353kb/sec 10kb/sec 460kb/sec 500
Port 443:. 351kb/sec 19kb/sec 480kb/sec 500
Port 7225: 223kb/sec 19kb/sec 322kb/sec 500
Port 7003: 223kb/sec 19kb/sec 322kb/sec 500
port 7202: 223kb/sec 19kb/sec 322kb/sec 500
port 7499: 223kb/sec 19kb/sec 322kb/sec 500

You should get at least 50kb/sec in BOTH columns for EVERY PORT, and anything less than about 5kb/sec in the middle column could suggest a problem. However, as long as none of your ports get a "timed out" message, you should be fine here. If you DO get a timeout, read below regarding PORTS.

2. Ping patchserver.crypticstudios.com
Click START > Run...
type "CMD" and hit Enter
type "ping patchserver.crypticstudios.com" and hit enter. (or you can copy, and then paste with right-click)

You should get a quick response of 4 lines of numbers. If you get "request timed out..." There are MUCH bigger problems going on. Make sure you can access google or something, and once there hit ctl + F5... if it loads there's probably a problem with the server and you should try again later.

PORTS
If you received a timeout error in the nettest, you need to check your hardware AND software firewalls. The ports required for the game are not open, which means either your computer, your router, or your ISP is blocking those ports.

RESOLUTION:
Turn off any software firewalls
Open the ports in your router (if you have one)
Run nettest again.

If you still have timeouts, you either missed something, or need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider)

TESTS WENT SMOOTHLY, AND YOU'RE STILL HAVING ISSUES?
1. Make sure the launcher has administrative access (run as admin, or right-click, Run As... pick a user with admin rights)
2. Post a tech-support ticket complaining about the Cryptic Patcher (maybe they'll get the hint and actually fix it if they keep having constant issues and complaints)
3. There's one more thing that MIGHT work:

Find "Star Trek Online.exe"
D:\Program Files\Cryptic Studios\star trek online\
OR
D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\star trek online\
drag and drop a shortcut to it onto your desktop
right-click the shortcut, click properties
In the "Target" box add the following to the end:
" -autopatchtimeout 10000"
so the whole target should look like this:
"D:\Program Files\Cryptic Studios\star trek online\Star Trek Online.exe" -autopatchtimeout 10000

now double-click the shortcut.

If that still doesn't work, well chances are you're boned. Cryptic Studios has some major issues with their Network and Server Software that causes alot of these issues. Guess what, it probably won't get fixed any time soon.

The Patcher uses only the 7000's ports for download, so as long as they're ok, you should be able to patch.

PORTS I've seen the patcher using:
    7004
    7255
    7399

There is also the second failure mode, which nettest was actually designed to check for: all the numbers in each column should be roughly the same. You need to not be using your internet connection for other heavy stuff at the time when you run it; shut down the patcher and your torrent client and wait 60 seconds before you run nettest.

The first two tests (ports 80 and 443) are the baseline for comparison. The 7xxx ports are the important ones. If these are significantly lower than the baseline numbers then you have an issue with your ISP, and it's likely to cause problems with playing STO, and sometimes also with patching. Run nettest again, and if you get the same results, post them on the forums along with the name of your ISP and which service you have from them, and ask for advice. (Be prepared for that advice to be "get a better ISP", because sometimes that's all you can do)
