Prior to leaving, Zinc mentioned in one of his interviews that Cryptic is planning on adding a Leaderboard (which I personally think its a bad idea for now). But it occured to me, wouldn't the current shared kill system give people more credit than they actually deserve?
For instance, a group with high supportive skills is going to have a high kill / low death kill ratio over those who PvP. And most of those people are assisted kills than the real killer.
And then there are those in the Capture and Hold or the Assault maps, that do the real work in winning the match, while others are busy fighting. (Similar to the concept of the old Navy, "Fighter Pilots make movies, Bomber Pilots Make History", addage.)
In short, shouldn't the real PvPers get real credit for kills or should it stay as-is with shared kills?
And should those who do the Capping in the C&H and Assault Maps get some sort of PvP credit as well?
Since almost any kill on a ship is a team effort by anything other than an Escort after the 1.2 patch (excluding Ramming Speed), a system which awards a "kill" to only a person that takes a ship from 100% hull to 0% hull wouldn't work.
Right now any ship that lands a couple of hits on a ship that eventually is destroyed gets credit for the kill, which is equally worthless. I'd like to see something like a "kill credit" awarded for every ship that does 25% or more damage to the ship that is destroyed. This allows all those who contribute to the ship's destruction to receive credit but only if that contribution was significant in nature.
Perhaps both types of kills could be on the scoreboard, where if you get a kill by yourself, it's a "Kill". But if you get help, then it's an "Assist Kill" (with contribution of at least 25% damage).
The current scoreboard is somewhat messed up anyway. I have noticed that I sometimes do not get a point, even I did 10K damage to an opponent, and other times I get a credit for doing less than 1K.

I'd have said it should remain as shared kills, the way it is now. I could understand a new category for killing blows, but surely no one would take that seriously if a lucky torp takes out a target at the last 1%.
Leader boards are inconsequential really aren't they? I admit, at the end of a match I have a look to see my stats in relation to others, but the team win is more important.

I would surmise that the first and foremost goal should be to decide what the Leaderboard represents. Is it simply e-peen stroking? Will it be used for tournaments or ladder rankings? Is it used for some future leveled match-making system or data logging and analysis system?
If it's just for fun and games and e-peen stroking then you can use any statistics you like as everyone will disregard it anyway as worthless and it will have been a waste of time and effort. But should it be used for one of the other purposes, then I'd suggest a player statistical breakdown which runs off the existing tracked information within the game such as:
Wins / Losses / Win:Loss Ratio
Kills / Deaths / Kill: Death Ratio
Total Damage / Energy Weapon Damage / Kinetic Damage
I'm for sticking with the shared kills counter. Perhaps an adjustment to how much someone must contribute in damage or debuffing, as was mentioned above, should be made but the actually skill shot doesn't seem particularly interesting to me. I've also had the kill shot with the lucky torp, or been just enough added attack to finally pop a tanking target and credit isn't always awarded as it is.
As Bounty said, in most cases it's the support that allows for a kill shot.

Yes, a system would have to be put into place to narrow things down.

Thats the main reason why I don't like the idea of leaderboards in the first place, because that does E-peen stroke and on the other hands it points out those who aren't good at PvP and publicly humilates them.
And there is the fact that Cryptic knows nothing about PvP.
Honestly, I think that the players running support should get more credit. They keep me alive long enough to be really effective.
Now, whether that means separate boards, one for kills, one for repairs, one for shield heals... whatever, that's cool with me.
Support is a totally thankless job, lol.
Just ask any Old School WoW Pally
That being said I can't tell you how awesome it is to see the boards after loosing is seeing that you have done over 400,000+ points worth of healing, 250,000+ damage, and have all but one of your teammates leave the match complaining about not getting any support.
What I really want to see on cap-and-hold score board is "time on capture"... i.e. who spends time actually trying to WIN the match.
Unlike arena games, where the object is to kill and not die, in cap-and-hold the object is to, er, cap-and hold... so why can we not see who was actually avoiding the temptation to pointlessly pew pew and actually spent time capturing the damn bases?
