"Hey Great Britain, you know how we totally saved your asses from Hitler? Well if you ever wanted to repay us for that, we could definitely use a hand over here in Vietnam."
"No way man, we totally gave that place back to the French, we've done our job here."
A bit over the top I agree however US Army air corps pilots did volunteer and fly for the RAF prior to pearl harbor. Though they were recalled once the US officially entered the War and rerouted to the Pacific theater.
Of course the US landing in France and pushing Germany slowly east was directly responsible for pushing TRIBBLE airfields back from England reducing the amount of time fighter escorts could remain with the bombers. Of course that push was multi national so the US could hardly claim sole credit for it's success.
The whole idea that the US save Britain from Hitler is misleading. The British saved themselves. The RAF defeated the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Yes there were French and Polish and Dutch and Canadian and American pilots too. But the majority of them were Brits. Lets not forget that Monty was fighting Rommel in the desert of North Africa long before the Americans arrived in 1942. So lets give the Brits credit where credit is due. As far as the French, go ahead and rag on 'em all you want.
The Neutrality Patrol, yes, and I completely agree, England owes a debt of thanks to America. However, the point I was trying to make (other than Haz was wrong and I was right...but I'm always right!) was that the Soviet/Germany conflict was much larger than any other part of the war. I believe it was roughly four times the scale of the Western Front, with the Soviets suffering eight million deaths - over 20 times the American casualties (not factoring in the 13.7 million civilians), and anyone who claims it was because the American troops were better deserves a knock over the head.
Because of my rather...strange family tree, I can certainly see the US side of things. I celebrate July 4th, despite having been born and raised in England. However, the ignorance, or willful ignorance that America won WW2 single-handedly is not just ludicrious, but offensive. Ignoring the fact that America joined the war officially only after they had been personally attacked, they also turned a blind eye to the Holocaust until 1944. Hardly the actions of people who proclaim themselves to be dedicated to freedom and civil liberties.
And no, that isn't a personal attack on anyone on the forums, or anyone I'm specifically thinking about. Just making random crazy comments. NOW DANCE.
