Internet Connection Disconnects

Has anyone been losing their internet connection during gameplay? I don't just mean server not responding, I mean your whole internet connection is disabled for a few seconds? I've only recently started seeing this since launch and was wondering if it was just me.

Sounds like an issue with your modem or router. Do you happen to be using a 2wire wireless Gateway, they have issues with many types of mmo traffic.

Motorola DocSis 3.0. Oddly enough, whenever this happens all the indicators on the modem say everything is recieving and transmitting as usual and when I diagnose my connection problem the connect wizard seems to think that it is a problem with the website, i.e.: microsoft.com and google.com are not responding rather than the expected DNS server is down. I've noticed this only happens late at night, usually between 10pm-11pm, or 12am-1am, independent of congestion or traffic, and only seems to rear it's head when playing STO. Any ideas? Windows 7 Ult., 64bit. No hardware changes since launch.

Cable internet right? Also what type of router are you using?

that does point to an internet issue.

    .
is your net diagnose using tracert and nettest during these hours? aside from that i would say that using speedtest.net and choosing a server near boston or california would also help prove that your download and upload speeds have slowed down versus other times of the day.
It is known that some ISP will cut out bandwidth to subscribers at night ((after midnight usually)) to give that extra bandwidth to major companies in the area so they can do thier backups and data transfers and not suffer bandwidth issues for them doing so. then slowly after a few hours they start to throttle the bandwidth back to residential users.

So, by doing those 3 test above and having saved files to show you can call your ISP and 'inquire' as to what is happening. of course the only other legitimate reason, is that they are laying down new infrastructure and/or fixing the existing ones and you are losing bandwidth due to re-routing.

Any ideas? Windows 7 Ult., 64bit. No hardware changes since launch.
i dont see how it could be win7. i use win7 ultimate and home premium to play and have never had any issues with what you are having......that is one of those things that makes it hard to troubleshoot w/o actually being there to visually inspect.

but i hope the net testing and inquiry fix your issues.

I've noticed the case with my Comcast ISP, that occasionally, they will cut the connection for a few seconds, then restart. I suspect that they do this to try to shake off persistent Bit-Torrent connections, as they are no longer allowed to selectively filter out these connection, which they tried to do in the past...

Yeah Cox Cable is my ISP. Linksys E3000 is my router. I'll do a comparative speedtest later tonight to see if my upload speed is significantly diminishing at night. If it is that could explain it.

As a Comcast user as well, I can verify they used to do that to me too. It hasn't happened in several weeks but around the time the cure came out, they would kill my connection for about 5 seconds then it'd come back. I verified this while pinging google while playing. I'd be going along fine, then they'd drop exactly 5 packets and it would come back. That was JUST enough for me to lose my STO connection. The time interval varied but it was always 4-5 packets that were dropped then it would come back.

However the nice customer support rep assured me that it wasn't intentional. At least she didn't tell me to just clear my browser cache ;)

I had this frequently with an onboard Realtek 8111C on my Asus P6T7 WS. Switched to a Killer2100, hasent happened since. The issue only occured in STO.

Oddly enough, this same thing just started happening to me over the last weekend. It only happens when I play STO or CO. I can make it about half way through a pvp match, then I lose my internet connection. It comes back a minute or two later. I can play BFBC2 all day long without a problem. I have road runner and an Ambit u10c018 modem, win 7 64 and on board nvidia ethernet. I have been playing CO and STO without a problem since they were released. I was thinkin about going to the cable co. to swap out the modem but thought it strange that someone else started having the same problem at the same time.

Can you post the results of the following tests?

    Run a trace route:

    * Click on Start
    * Click on Run, or if using Windows Vista just skip to the next step
    * Type cmd into the dialog box and press Enter.
    * In the window that opens type "tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com"
    * Check the speed listed on the return

If you see any hops over 180ms, this could be the cause of the rubber banding.

How to acquire, run and read the Nettest tool:

    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download the application and run it (Windows 7 and Vista users make sure to right click the icon and run as admin if you are having issues with the tool running.)

The Nettest tool checks that the ports required for patching and playing Star Trek Online are not blocked or filtered. Good values returned from the Nettest tool look like:

Column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate). If the values in these columns is less than what is expected you may have filtering or blocked ports either on your personal network or from your ISP.
