Here's the idea:

Specific premade versions of arenas that...
  • Accepts only teams of 5
  • Allows everyone to see who is in each team
  • Allows people to "ride along" with any of the players: they get the same data stream (read only) as that player so they can watch from that players POV with their own camera (changeable angle/zoom).
Cryptic run tournaments with Cryptic provided (free to the public) lite clients to ride along with certain positions (team A,B:slot1-5) so friends, family, and thousands in techie-bars can cheer for their favorite players.

P.S. I'm available as a creative consultant XD

    It's an intriguing idea, it could possibly work. However my only problem with it is the fact that we stil don't have enough people playing PvP in the first place.

    Guild Wars has 'Observer Mode'. It's awesome - watch ladder matches between ranked teams...of course, we'd also need rankings. And a ladder...

    %{chance of implementation} ~= %{need to promote the game and generate excitement and revenue}

    ^^

    observer mode was such an amazing thing, easily one of the best features about GW.
    • Really good at watching the metagame
    • Watching people to improve
    • Figuring out when someone actually did bot it up (because seriously, interupting a 1/2 second skill with a 1/4 second skill 100% of the time is actually physically impossible)

    Observer modes are indeed one of the most effective ways of improving and expanding a PvP community. However, live-streaming the feed is apparently not trivial (depending on how the game engine is built), and there are always concerns about Vent hacking (spectator feeding cloaked ship positions to the other team via out-of-game channels).

    Recording in-game demos as files is apparently possible already, but nobody seems to do it. The closest we get is the odd FRAPS video here and there.
