You know 4~6 GB RAM is recommended amount for basically any level of gaming PC right? STO doesn't come close to using 6 GB RAM. I have 6 GB, usage doesn't go above 40% when playing any of my games and without anything running it's 20~28%, with STO and FF up usgae is around 33~36%. So that's how you will play with 'only' 6 GB RAM.

As for how it fried, probably bad luck/faulty stick/weird voltages.

Okay, that's almost like saying "Hey, while I was playing STO lightning struck my house and fried my PC! Concidence? You decide". What's next, "I was driving to work today while talking on my cellphone and I got pulled over and got a ticket" or "I was drinking a Starbucks coffee and someone robbed me".

No offense to you hon but how the heck do you figure that a game, which many thousands of users have been running, fried your RAM???

AFAIK there is no way for anything short of the RAM controller firmware itself to cause hardware damage directly. Not even an OS bug can do that, let alone a game. It is possible that you have cooling issues though, maybe check your system temps.

yeah i agree, it is most likely temp issues.

Little Tip it might not work for you but i found whenever i played STO my laptop was getting a little too hot probably from the additional strain and kept turning off every now and then to avoid damaging itself, However if you close down explorer through the task manager when playing i've found that i've had much less heat issues (Running Windows 7) Then you can use task manager to start explorer up again soon as you finish playing =]

    Terra~

I'm starting to think that STO needs a basic computer course as requirement before playing it.
Too many people trying to blame dodgy hardware/configuration on a game.

Like the man said, definitly temp issues or faulty BIOS setup, or possibly latent hardware damage like from an ESD.
Also, one thing i have learned is NEVER let let the system automatically detect settings, because more often than not it will overvolt.

I heard some babies got eaten and cattle were rustled while someone was playing STO. Coincidence? You decide.

I seem to do just fine with 6 GB of RAM and if you watch the system resources you'll see that the game doesn't come close to using all of it. If you can't play this game w/ 6gb of RAM, then I'd suggest creating a dual boot with one OS strictly for gaming and another OS for everything else. If you've got a bunch of stuff running in the background of your OS it will cause game latency and could take up extra memory... though it's still kinda hard to make an impact on 6 even 8 GB of RAM on a desktop with background stuff. Background processes can also make your hard disk a bottle neck in performance if they're accessing the disk frequently. As mentioned earlier in this forum, there is no piece of software that can burn a memory DIMM. Only a hardware or cooling issue will do that. Try to avoid boxes with tons of fans... I had a case with 8 fans once, installed them as recommended and had tons of cooling issues, then I got a case with 2 fans, one big one in front and one big one in back and the system suddenly ran grate. I'm not a cooling expert, but don't believe the slick marketing designed to separate you from your money when building a PC. There's plenty of good information out there on the internet, the trick is finding it.

As for the rest who are poking fun... seriously? This guy probably doesn't know much about computers and simply blamed the game. Software puts load on a system which can cause issues to surface. He simply saw that the RAM failed while playing STO and doesn't realize that STO was simply the catalyst that exposed a flaw in his hardware that existed all along. Rather than poke fun try to be a little supportive and heck you could even try to educate.

I'm sorry but I do not buy the entire "doesn't know much about computers" argument for two very basic and important reasons:

    1. Ignorance is no excuse for any kind of behavior be it breaking the law or computer usage. My mom, Goddess rest her soul, did not know a lick about computers either yet she took the time and effort to learn with my help not only to use the system she had but to build ones for herself and those at her local church who were less fortunate helping them as well. If my mom can learn how to pickup a book and learn so can anyone else and using "I R St00p1d" as an excuse indicates a lack of desire to learn which I will not encourage.

    2. The OP by the very language that they used in their post opened the door for such teasing. Had they not known better they could have simply said such instead of trying to blame something that they genuinely really had know knowledge about.

I know a lot of this sounds harsh but this entire sense of entitlement and "o woe is me" for behavior that in some circumstances could get someone arrested or worse needs to stop especially considering how rampant it can be in these very forums on some days. If you wish to get help take the time to learn, research, and ask polite and intelligent questions otherwise do not expect many to help you or even sympathize with your plight.
