I bought the game hours ago via steam. I have activated the key. It will still not let me logg in. Do I have to wait 24 hours? this is how I feel :(

you need more that the retail key you also need to select a subscription option and enter the payment for the subscription credit card , game time card or paypal.
and have the payment validated. you will not be charged for the subscription until after the 30 days are used up on credit card and paypal but it must be set up to be active.

I also set up the monthly pay and it was validated. For some reason whenever I try to log in it still says "Connection to server timed out"

it timing out recheck your firewall and antivirus permissions. Sometime after a patch they will flag the game as new a require to be reautorized net access, also check IE that is is not set to work offline or using a proxy in the internet options cannection lan settings.

do a tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com and a nettest and post results

    Nettest:
    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download this file and run it
A command prompt should appear running the test automatically

For good connections, column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate). If the values in these columns is less than what is expected you may have filtering or blocked ports either on your personal network or from your ISP.
