I downloaded the demo via Steam with no issues, but now when I try to patch it'll make a little progress, about 0.4%, and then my internet connection completely halts. Yahoo messenger disconnects, I cannot browse the web, and the STO patcher starts all over again. I've tried using the US proxy to the same results.
Edit: I even tried letting the patcher run overnight to not have to worry about it messing with me while it did its thing. No luck.
So I did a little bit of digging in my event viewer and using the netstat -no command in cmd shows that your patcher is trying to open too many concurrent TCP connections, which basically seems to halt my connection all together. I am at a loss of where to go from here. This is incredibly frustrating because I've not had a problem like this before with other programs patching, including other programs from Cryptic Studios.
If there's a mirror where I can download the patch, or use a different client (I've seen mention of bit torrent being usable for downloading the client, but what about patches?) links would be greatly appreciated, because I can't find TRIBBLE on your site for it.
Seriously, I had to do so much research just to find what ports needed opening, this is basic info that shouldn't be hidden away. C'mon, throw me a bone.
the game uses ports 7000-7500 and all must be unblocked. The patch I believe patches on port 7255 so if the port is blocked or filtered it will have problem downloading. also some 2 wire modems have problems handling the number of small packet connections the game required and locks up. you may need to upgrade the modem firmware or change setting on it.

I submitted a ticket the other day about Hughes.net 1,000 + ping causing STO to rubber band/freeze up completely (both concurrently) always On My Windows 7 Machine. But it was a bit more then that it was freezing up my internet connections completely disconnects as well then I started adjusting the networking card even using another PCI networking card same issue. I try it on my Windows XP machine witch can barely run it @ basic without graphic lag it is doing better then my 3.2 6 core 16 gig of ram with 2 1 gig nvedia cards in sli mode. But the XP machine doesn't suffer from the issue. although it is to laggy graphic wise to play on it. and a idea to go into the future release. Option for client/server communications to have more leeway for high latency connections maybe in options. under network. although it seems to be a issue in windows 7 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-loses-internet-connection-but-not/0014801b-7e82-4bb6-a8e7-e8867eb3fcee and yes I have been trying spectacularly hard to try to make it work tried to come up with way's to start the patcher up faster by disconnecting my internet by adjusting settings on the networking card to make it reset and sto drops back to the full screen login screen and that works. The patcher adds another whole 5 minutes after my isp drops to try to load the web based interface it should be a self contained .exe file as in the background can have the updates for games and current events but it doesn't matter if it loads or not like the login screen on the patcher ect. But, outside that hangup issue. STO does work decently on Hughes.net the client (STO) does allow for some leeway so with the latency so it doesn't feel ridged (Like your trying to fly a brick instead of a star ship if STO client stricky responded when the server told the client to let it happen) and quite playable. Hopefully a dev will see this though I tried to put alot of detail in this issue. although it can be better organized but not one of my strong suits although I can try if needed.

I just don't understand why this is happening with ST:O. I had no problems whatsoever patching Champions Online when I played it.
Whatever, just thought I'd give the demo a spin, but this is too frustrating to bother with.
