A matter of curiosity

So, I happened to glance at a thread here, in which the OP was directed to do a trace route to the patch server. For the heck of it, I decided to do one myself. The highest ms I got was 143, which was a hop from what looked like Cambridge, MA to Los Angeles! Before that, it had started in Albuquerque, gone to New York, then Chicago, then to MA, and finally to California.

Surely there's a better way to do that. Why can't I just somehow get a connection from Albuquerque to LA?

edited to add: I only have a very rudimentary idea of what's actually occurring here.

Patch server as well? Either way, why can't I just get a more direct route, instead of going to Chicago and Massachusetts?

That is all depending on how your ISP is routing your connection to our network. Unfortunately there is not much you can do about it.

And this is only the connection going to the Server. Chances are that the return path is taking an entirely different route...

This doesn't normally happen. Asymmetric routing is avoided by the major backbone ISPs, it makes things awkward. It can happen, it's just uncommon.

I think a grassroots campaign to send hundreds of thousands of letters to my ISP might just work... maybe. Or maybe I can live with it, since it doesn't affect anything I can notice anyways...

    Thanks for the reply.
