A few weeks too late, it has been mentioned in other topics.

I wouldn't normally advocate that everyone use a clearly broken skill, but this has got to be fixed before the game goes under, and apparently the only way to make that happen is to get everyone to see why it's so "awesome" so, here's to victory! *toast*

by the way, welcome to metagaming. We've been doing this since day one; enjoy your read.
Metagame as a technical term refers to the strategies and reasoning used by players in a multiplayer game. In the context of Star Trek Online, it refers to the landscape of builds and skills that are being used in PvP.

As the game evolves and changes over time, and especially as balance patches and more content is released (not yet but it will happen), different builds and tactics come to dominate the metagame. For example, if RSP is being used often, other teams may decide to carry it as well (since it is a powerful skill). Soon, carrying RSP stacks on a team becomes commonplace. At this point, the metagame will be shield defensive heavy, so anti-shield skills such as TSS or SNB will become a key strategic element. Eventually shield countering will become so common that carrying RSP stacks will be a waste, so teams will replace this skill with other skills that exploit the opponents' over-preparedness for RSP stacking. For example, if teams bring an additional shield removal skill at the expense of a hull resistance skill, they will be underequipped for fighting debuffs like APB. If enough teams start to replace RSP with APB, then both RSP stacking and TSS stacking will exit the metagame, which will shift to being hull resistance heavy.

Reading the metagame is a key ability of a successful PvP player. This can be done in a combination of ways: playing matches, observing matches, communicating with others in-game in PvP outposts or off-game in PvP-centric forums. Successful PvP players therefore tend to have good awareness and presence in the PvP community.

A major aspect of the metagame is the Flavor of the Month (FotM) builds. A FotM is typically a gimmick build for which strong counters are not yet known, so these builds often dominate the metagame quickly. However, once teams begin to figure out how to defeat a given FotM, it will quickly go out of favor, or mutate.

Drastic changes in the metagame are rare. They happen after large game updates (such as the release of campaigns), or when a new viable FotM build is discovered.

Roughly from launch, heres a basic idea of the STO metagame and how it's adapted. (not touching photonic shockwave or anything else, just overarching themes)
    1. RSP stacking becomes popular
    2. TSS counters RSP and shields, RSP stacking becomes less popular
    3. Top fleets develop into hull tanking and Shield level buffing, TSS becomes less popular.
    4. - Scrubs complain and nerf TSS into the ground -
    5. RSP stacking becomes popular again due to lack of TSS
    6. Hull healing is viewed as weak or super strong, based on the opinion of the user.
    7. SCV and ramming become popular
    8. Top fleets develop countermeasures against SCV, bad fleets don't
    9. SCV is still popular because people can't understand how to fight it like they did TSS stacking.

There actually are a good number of counters to SV already but most people are so slow to try new tactics.

    ........... K............... K
    .....................................
    ...........................................
    K ................ FFF ............... K
    .....................FF...............
    .......................................
    .......................K

now the K team fires CSV..... the F team stays close to heal each other of course INSIDE the AOE area. fun^^
the F team could also use evasive maneuvers to get out there... attack one weak end... np.
F and K are just random, could also be F and F, would be hard to distinguish though.

    if its like

    KK...............FFF
    KKK..............FF

then you could spread out and use CSV yourself^^

... what i wanna say is use tactics. nice that we have working AOE´s now that encourage this.

Nothing is wrong with CSV or Torp spread that I can tell from both giving, recieving or countering it in combat.

I don't believe C:SV is broken so much as it can be highly problematic when used with certain other abilities... and when your target(s) forget where the throttle is. The same can still be said for C:RF under the right buffs and circumstances.

FBP and a proper formation are good tools vs. Cannon Volley.

That being said it's not as much of a "clean" hard counter as TSS vs. RSP was pre 1.2.
