Server Disconnects on Clearwire

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
So I have been having a lot of disconnects playing the game. I ran nettest and it seems 7003 hangs up. All the posts I've read have said if its not local then it's the ISP and I should contact them. Now, I don't believe I should have to do this. I think Cryptic should make the game work despite port blocking. I have other online games that all work fine.

That said, I also understand that so far Cryptic has not done this so I do need to contact my ISP. This is where I need Cryptics help to "slap" them. :) Here is a partial transcript of the chat I had with Clearwire.

Your question is: Port 7003 seems to be blocked and causing Star Trek Online game to disconnect from server. Using nettest.exe to see this: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showpost.php?p=2740097&postcount=26
You have been connected to Amanda Jones.
Amanda Jones: Hi Jason! I'll be happy to help you today!
Jason: Hello
Jason: Still there?
Amanda Jones: Yes im here
Amanda Jones: The reason it is not working is because some things are not supported with clear and some gaming sites are not supported.
Jason: So Star Trek Online is not and will not be supported? There is no way to get these ports opened?
Amanda Jones: No it has to do with a contract between the companies.
Jason: between what companies?
Amanda Jones: The company who provides the star trek.
Jason: They have a contract stating you can not open those ports?
Amanda Jones: No. The ports can not be opened because we do not have a contract with them,.
Jason: Why do you need a contract to open the ports? Why are the ports being blocked? You are basically saying you want Cryptic to pay you to open ports.
Jason: This is not legal and I will be opening a ticket with the FCC on this
Amanda Jones: No im saying that some sites are blocked and not able to use.
Amanda Jones: In the terms of service with clear it explains that.

Really?!? When I signed up I specifically said I would be gaming online. I did put in a complaint with the FCC for all the good that will do. I'm hoping maybe Cryptic can contact Clearwire too and get to the bottom of this. I'm currently in San Antonio TX.

The "interesting" thing is my Nettest results are suddenly working well. (or I think they are) at least they are getting past 7003 now.

contacting nettest server..

    oh well...

I cancelled with them and told them this was why. Luckily I had a choice and was able to switch.

Still pretty sad that WoW, LotRO and Lego Beta all worked fine on Clear but STO did not.

It basically breaks down to a popularity contest. Game companies with a lot of money and resources can make ISP's bend to their whim, but small organizations get less attention. It's unfortunate that the world works like that but alas that is life!

That really sucks. It'd be nice if my FCC complaint did something but I'm sure nothing will come of it.

They'll just say "resolved via competition" since you moved to somebody else.

And for what it's worth, the issue there is that their tech support people are morons. The guy in the callcentre who answered your ticket has got no comprehension of how your ISP works and is making stuff up.

For what it's worth, Clearwire has an abominable reputation for this stuff, and the size of the company doesn't matter. They make up similar excuses for WoW players who are having performance issues. The real problem is that their network is overloaded and all applications are suffering because of this. You're well rid of them.
