Logged in the other day for the first time in a long time and wonder of all wonders, I actually *had fun*. Not sure why, I think it might have been the accolade system and maybe the changes to memory alpha. I am a goal-oriented person and having something other than nebulous promotions every 11 or 10 levels or whatever seems to be doing something nice for me.
Let you get me wrong, I still have a plethora of problems with the way Cryptic does things. I know one should never say never, but I'm fairly certain I will probably never spend so much as a nickel on another one of their products.
But I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same experience as me, wrote this game off totally and then logged in to be pleasantly surprised?
I think that's going to be do or die time for a lot of Cryptic's remaining customers. It seems like quite a few have written so.
As for me, I'm surprised I'm having fun.
It's probably the difference between seeing the changes little by little and not really being wowwed, and seeing them all at once after months of being away.
I've certainly had more fun once I got involved into PvP (I had only dabbled in it for a few dozen rounds prior to RA) and Dailies (I never understood the attraction until STO).
However, I can definitely sympathize with the content drought as at least two STFs were pushed back (Into the Hive and Children of Khan) - not to mention Weekly Missions (now slated for Season 2.0).
However, I've seen new subscribers on the uptake and I imagine Season 2 will ameliorate some (not all) concerns.
That said, I've never disliked it - just had it fluctuate from Fair to Good to Fair. I'd level my alt but I really want to experience as much Klingon Content the way a new player would to get an accurate comparison between the two.
Not really. Still havent played in weeks. Wasted money on a LT sub. Dont even know if I want or can give this game a chance when there are games out there that are released with seemingly full content and with less bugs.
This game is a good example of how not to launch and what not to do when it comes to creating an MMO. Also, cant find a copy on the shelves at the local Gamestops (they have them just in the back) but I can find Lord of the Rings Online still.
Hoping things pick up with season 2. Just doubtful that it will be anything to tell my friends and try to convince them to play or change the poor reviews or cause a revisit of any of the numerous poor reviews. Just going by Cryptic's track record and their MO in creating MMOs.
Its impossible to get players to come back once their bridge is burned. So many quality games out there, why play this?

A lot of MMOs seem to have this trend where major content patches are "do or die" time for them. But MMOs are glaciers. They plod along. At a slow pace. Eventually they leave a gash in the landscape of the industry filled with the rants of those it left behind, but as they surface, more and more of their mass is revealed over time.
In any event ... I'm having fun doing my usual. I decided a long time ago to tie my two highest level characters into the B'Tran cluster. My main, a human "captain" who runs a sovereign class cruiser is on a semi-diplomatic mission but has found himself trapped in a 4 way interstellar war between the Phaonians, Crimto, Starlians and Strekellans.
It doesn't help that the Borg keep cropping up since they invaded Gamma Orionis space. Nor does the ever present threat of the Klingons or the Undine help matters. But he basically runs between Pike City over on Cestus III and the B'Tran Cluster.
My other "captain" is a Strekellan. Who has joined Starfleet. And he and his team have helped reconfigure a Nimbus class science vessel with Strekellan technology and they are at the forefront of the first major diplomatic bond between the Federation and any of the 4 major players in the Battle of the B'Tran.
So yeah, I can see how 3 dailies every day get boring. But I do my best to write a story and tie mine together. Makes them so much more fun. And I plod along with the game at a slow pace, since the game is slow moving.
Since Cryptic put up all the exclusiv stuff on C-Store it's obvious that they want to milk as much cash as from the community before this game dies.
Yeah that's a major let-down. It almost feels like the game's life cycle is super accelerated if you know what I mean.
I'm sure someone will come along to criticize you for pointing this out, to which I will tell them "I'll beat this horse until *I* know it's good and dead!
You guys realize that 2.0 is bringing 6 new levels. A new ship or set of T5 ships. Orion Female outfits. The Breen. A new sector. Possibly some Iconians. Ship Interiors.
The C-Store kerfuffle of the past few days will be a distant memory once all the new content gets pushed out.
6 new levels. That's a big step forward for a game that's dying?

It's 19 actually, according to dstahl's Engineering Report (which is going to be fairly accurate if the external build comes out in a couple weeks).
8 New Klingon Episodes
5 New Sector Block Episodes (Levels 46-51)
1 New Level 53 Fleet Action
4 New non-combat, diplomatic missions
1 New Weekly Mission
It's not if I have to count that one faction will profit from it most.
What Cryptic done yesterday is a serious offense for the customers how prordered the game.
Can't wait to see the Galaxy X in C-Store for 1500+ C-points
Funny how people assume this is just a cash grab and seems to not even think aobut the fact that A LOT of people actually wanted this, thas even the reason the devs have stated for opening up pre-order items on the C-Store.
Offense to pre-order customers? Hardly, you paid no more than anyone else who bought the retail version, you got access to the Open Beta, headstart and a "free" in game trinket or two.
It's not if I have to count that one faction will profit from it most.
It is, if you do the math:
Klingon Unique:
8 New Klingon Episodes
Federation Unique:
4 New non-combat, diplomatic missions
Faction Agnostic:
5 New Sector Block Episodes (designed for levels 46-51)
1 New Level 53 Fleet Action
1 New Weekly Mission
I know you'll "believe it when you see it" but that makes for 15 new missions for Klingons and 11 new missions for the Federation players. I'm not sure how that's insignificant or a sign of a game in its death throes.
This excludes minigames (not missions but definitely content) and exploration content (though we will see first contact missions too).
EDIT: TO CLARIFY - I believe Klingons need more content. This post is only created to illustrate that's it's not all Klingons for Season 2. By all means, Klingons should be fleshed out. He says "it's not" and I say "it is" regarding the balance of content for Season 2.
I wish I didn't need disclaimers but some users found difficulty reading what I wrote.
I believe the 6 levels referred to in your quote are character levels, as in 46-51.
No, no. You misread.
Those 5 missions are designed for the new Level 46-51 Sector Block in Season 2. THat's whyI called them 5 New Sector Block Missions (the levels 46-51 was to denote the designed play-level in the new sector block).
Really, the opposite. As time wears on, I write this game off more and more. I'm reserving final judgment for Season 2, though.
I'm in agreement with this mostly. It must be a worrying and potentially exciting time for Cryptic to see if what they're working so hard on is considered good enough to appease people for a time. Content and things to do are badly needed for those who are after a typical MMO experience. I'd be more than a bit surprised if they aren't already working on content beyond Season 2 already.

They are:
Weekly Episodes (start Season 2 - allegedly have 1.5 months of weekly content in varying stages of readiness)
2 STFs (Children of Khan and Into the Hive - both were postponed to focus on Klingons, Diplomacy, and Ship Interiors for Season 2. Gozer had done a good portion of the design for Into the Hive before he left, as it is a standalone conclusion to the STF arc he worked on.)

probably because the people that hate cryptic will see anything as a sign that they are greedy, evil and the game is dying.
others see that they are a business, trying to make money in a bad economy and their success is Sto success

I didn't, you did :P 6 new levels for your character to progress through. 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, and 51. If he was referring to the episodes or missions he would've used those terms. You can 'level' your character anywhere you can gain experience which might be the new episodes / missions but could just as easily be old stuff like Gamma Orionis DSEs or B'Tran etc.
I've taken a very long break, I think I will be returning very soon, I'm holding off till they put the Excelsior in, if it does come.
The dreamy Excelsior I hope that despite all that everyone says that it becomes available as a highest tier ship. I've seen people saying that it's tiny with stats listed at just over half the length of the Galaxy class but other places I find online say it's only about 100m shorter. Sure it isn't as tall but it's sleek and streamlined and very capable in a fight.

There is quite a bit of discussion over the size of the Excelsior, because there are some pretty big differences between the various Excelsior Refits.

Gah! Read what I said! You are pointing to levels / episodes / missions, I am talking about character progression from the current level cap of 45, up to level 51. You are only right in the way that you're talking about which is not what I was pointing out lol

What'd help is lots of missions, so you don't always have to do the same missions to progress; e.g. you have to help a relief effort instead of aiding the Azura.

A big look into the various size theories is on that link. From 162m all the way up to 467m in variation.
I think it's one of the most awesome ships in Star Trek either way
That and the ambassador class

What are we arguing about?
LOUD NOISES!!!!!!
For reference, there are six new levels in Season 2:
2. 47
3. 48
4. 49
5. 50
6. 51
What'd help is lots of missions, so you don't always have to do the same missions to progress; e.g. you have to help a relief effort instead of aiding the Azura.
