somewhere after the last few patches my pc seems to completly freeze after a while on ground missions.
Never had any problems bevor. I could easily play STO on max without problems.
Only thing i can do is to shut of the pc via power button and then turn it on again.
I've upgraded my ATi driver to 10.5 and it didn't help eighter. Somewhere i've read something about turning down shadows and dynamic lighting. Didn't help eighter. My card and cpu core temp never go passt the 50°C mark no matter what the outside temp it is. The system isn't overclocked.
It's really weird because it seems that something has changed during the last patches. In space everything works fine but on the ground it really seems as if the freeze occures after the same amount of time or maybe it is bound to something i'm missing.
Is someone else having this kind of problem?
My system specs:
core 2 Quad 2.83 GHZ
Ati Radeon HD 5870
8GB DDR3 Ram
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

Can you post a DXDIAG just so I can check a few things?
I allready run a check on my graphics card and so far there is no fragmentation or any other problems while running a benchmark. Seems as if everything performs nicely. What doesn't tell that their is no hardware problem somewhere. Maybe there is and it just get's visible while running STO on a ground mission. But let's wait for the dxdiag
Yeah I had this problem myself, turn off Dynamic Lighting in the game options and you should be good to go.
I know it sucks, since doing that removes a lot of the pretty from the game, but it's either that or rampant crashes. Seems to be a problem with ATI cards.
@Winterblink
I allready tried..didn't help. Even turned shadows off. Something surely went wrong after the last patches somewhere because bevor them i had no problems at all at maximum and everything turned on.
I even made the RAM check in windows 7 and passed without errors.

Ok so one thing to ask is what do you have you detail sliders set to (this includes world, terrain, character texture, and character detail)? One thing is the sliders that have the option to be moved over 100% really shouldn't be unless your running a multi card setup.
The sliders are all at 200%. So far those settings worked without performance loss nor freeze. Even cpu and graphics card temp under those settings stay around 60c.
Ill test it with 100% but it should be the same result if i'm correct
Have tested it with the sliders all at 100% and it still freezes the pc completly.
If it helps. Im currently in the mission "setting a trap" and it freezes when i have to close the portals. Happens always sooner or later. Never managed to destroy more than 2 of the 3 portals. Sometimes it allready freezes while shooting at the first portal.

Well when it comes to hard locks or freezing it is typically a conflict with your hardware or OS. If it was the game it would just error out the application or crash. I suggested lowering those settings as the card have been having a hard time processing those requests. Try running some high level memory diagnostics, and a stress test to make sure your hardware is functioning correctly.
Hmm...good point. Is there some programm/s you would recommend to make those high level stress tests on the hardware?
Software Side i only installed MS Visual C++ 2010 express with MS SQL Server in the last 2 months but i don't know if a SW conflict could cause such a lock up. Nor do i know if this sw would be this powerfull to achieve such a lockup.

if i get a solution i'll give you feedback to it.
Unfortunately no I cannot recommend any as they are not products that Cryptic owns or supports, but some of the users on this forum can. Reach out to PegasusMD they are always full of awesome answers.
memtest86, sisoft sandra....heck even google search: free, stress test {do your mem, hard drive and GPU as those fail under load or when temp is too hot, despite what teamp reading say}
I get a similar problem, though it doesn't hardlock my machine, the game crashes and the crash reporting program loads up and it is ALWAYS during ground missions.
I currently have:
Intel Core i7 920 (2.67Ghz)
6GB DDR3 Triple Channel 1066Mhz
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB (running 10.6 Drivers)
I never overclock my hardware, i have the settings that you talked about past 100% but the game has been 99% smooth, even with AA at 4x, so i don't think its that, but i can try it all at 100%.
I've run stress tests with no result. Hardware seems to be ok.
I've fixed some errors in my registry and reinstalled directx.
Seems as if my system is more stable now regarding sto and crashes with errors.
Regarding the freezing i have a feeling that i know the answer to it. I turned of some settings like shadows to reduce the load on the graphics card. It helped greatly but freezes still occure from time to time.
The problem is that on such hot weather my card has 58c on idle. Cpu never rises above 50c but my graphics card does. The fan speed should be higher but it isn't. I suppose that the freezing is a protection against to much heat. Seems i need a solution for better cooling the card.
Ok my friend has been experiencing this since the Beta Everything runs smooth until planetside then he can play for varying amounts of times nothing over 2-3 mins and it completly locks up on him with no cryptic error.
his running windows xp sp3 nvidia 6600gt 256mb, 2 gigs of ddr2 ram pentium3 3.0ghz
At first we though it was limited Ram so we just got an extra gig today and still no luck Easy test bed for this problem is to start a new character and goto the first planet, we tried variousl resolution changes graphics options and trouble shooting options and all we did was make the crash worse and happen quicker. So we reset to default settings for his system and manadged to get it back working again for 2-3 minutes of play but crash still happens.
Its weird but explore missions where you have to gather 5 scans on planetside seem to run fine with no hitchups.
Not 100% sure but the only thing i can think of is that its something to do with hostile enemy AI that causes a conflict!

Well his card is not support so it is likely that added new feature have move the beyond what the card can handle in ground combat. (more details and particle affest ect) he should reduce shadows, particle affect and world details . It may help (or play in safe mode then slowly increase graphic settings and option until there is a problem)
Also be sure he has the latest driver installed
also the game is very cpu intensive and if the CPU on the low end It may not be able to handle the game.
he is running the game completly with everything off including all the different shadows and particle effects, what is this safe mode you talk about? and how do you get it to work.
Somehow i have the strange feeling that my problem isn't related to heat. It also freezes sometimes if i do nothing inside the game but always on ground missions. Sometimes a can play all day long without freeze and sometimes it freezes after half an hour or even less.

Well if you are freezing there is a conflict some where in your system. Could be OS, driver, or hardware related. The game cannot hard lock a system, but the game can be a catalyst if there is something else wrong. If your system was healthy and there was an error with the game it would just crash, but windows and your machine wouldn't freeze or crash.
but for my friend it only seems to do it with assighnment ground missions, we were doing explore missions on the ground with enemys and with just scan 4 objects at he experienced no crash at all. tending to suggest its a coding error with the ground missions throughout the story starting off from the first planet you beam down on in the tutorial.

Can you get him to post a dxdiag?
To create a DXDiag report, follow these steps:
1. Click "Start" menu, then click "Run"
2. In the "Open" box, type: DXDiag (hit enter)
3. If this is your first time running DXDiag, click "Yes" to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
4. Click "Save All Information" to create a DXDiag report.
5. Choose a name and location for the dump file (recommend desktop) and click "Save".
Zip this file and attach it to a post in this thread.
Right well We got him to run it in safe mode after he crashed out just after beam in and when he returned he didnt crash out once, Whereas before when we did the same mission he crashed out at 3 seperate points, so fingers crossed we have sorted out the problem, Hes liooking at upgrading his system for his birthday to dual core so as long as it runs fine now thats the main thing for the time being. will keep you all posted if anything changes or if the problem doesnt resurface again!
It was related to the graphics card. Because the GPU temp wasn't to hot it could be due to the heat blowing twards other components or something else got hot that wasn't measured.
I just had the feeling that the problem was there so I exchanged the stock fan against an arctic cooling twin fan and since then no freeze occured. The heat also is blown in a different direction. GPU heat also went down by nearly 20c on max settings.
Trust me, this ain't a problem with temps.
My rig is almost all water cooled + some airflow through the system to cool any leftovers (like ram, HDD).
I'm having the exact same problem, crashing left and right on ground missions that involves a lot of character in an area. For instance, going to the DS9 Fleet action would almost 100% crash when I get to the point near the exchange.
The crashes are quite variant. Most crashes are gameclient crashes (aka. I return back to desktop), a few are complete crash (ones that require me to turn off the computer), 1-2 times are something to do with 2d texture or something.
I noticed that another person who got the same problem with ground missions is also on ATi card and creative X-Fi sound card.
My vid card is a 5970. Is it possible there's some incompatibility?
Since safe more seems to work (haven't tried it myself... lowering visual setting is already a horrid experience... and it still crashes ... I just bought this video card 1-2 months ago)
yeah thats the same as my friend except his card is a nividia one so it must be a problem with the game itself, If you havent tried yet start in safe mode my friends alot happier now even if he does have to run it in that mode!
I suppose that's the only viable solution at the moment.
I hope this issue gets fixed soon.
Being restricted to run a game in it's most basic visuals doesn't sound very appealing.
Especially if you got a good rig in the first place.
My problem was no crash but a complete system freeze and it vanished with a better cooling system for my graphics card. So it was related to heat. Your crash problems aren't related to why i made this topic.
After i upgraded my cooling i had no more system freeze. I never really had CTD or BSOD or something like this. I just had a complete system freeze with only being able to do a hard reset. With my new cooling i haven't had any troubles.
When i think about it. The freezes started with the hotter weather althou i didn't see any GPU/CPU Temps over 60°C. But my modification worked like a charm.

I did mention I do encounter complete system crash 1-2.
So it's not 'entirely' unrelated.
No system crash whatsoever after you upgraded cooling?
