Lag and Rubberbanding

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Has anyone else encountered lagging or rubber banding since the last couple of patches? My system ran the game fine before with little or no lag...now it's becoming quite a bother, especially in PvP!! I have made sure I have the most current drivers up to date...any thoughts or comments would be welcome.

The past day or so has been real bad regarding connectivity. I was dropped repeatedly today. I think it is another server overload issue.

We are not experiencing any load issues on the servers. If we were we would tell the public (we try not to keep secrets when it affects players.). Post a nettest and a trace route, and we can see if there are any issue on your side that might be causing the issue.

    Run a trace route:

    * Click on Start
    * Click on Run, or if using Windows Vista just skip to the next step
    * Type cmd into the dialog box and press Enter.
    * In the window that opens type "tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com"
    * Check the speed listed on the return

If you see any hops over 180ms, this could be the cause of the rubber banding.

How to acquire, run and read the Nettest tool:

    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download the application and run it (Windows 7 and Vista users make sure to right click the icon and run as admin if you are having issues with the tool running.)

The Nettest tool checks that the ports required for patching and playing Star Trek Online are not blocked or filtered. Good values returned from the Nettest tool look like:

Column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate). If the values in these columns is less than what is expected you may have filtering or blocked ports either on your personal network or from your ISP.

I've also had symptoms that appear to be delayed/dropped packets. (No disconnects, however.) My ISP is ATT; any chance they are 'shaping' this stuff?

I've been getting a lot of pausing/lag rubberbanding and server disconnects if I'm playing on the Klingon side today. Fed side runs okay.

Testing the tracerouting from Telewest/Virgin Media, the highest I got was at hop 15 of 16, but that's not enough to cause the above issues.

ok I do not usually post in forums but read them as much as I can. I returned to the game a few days ago having had a break after beta and initial launch. I am experiencing unplayable rubber banding which leads to a server disconnect. Or I cannot get past retrieving maps before I get disconnected. I assumed that some of my settings were wrong and started to search. Nothing found and I began to think it was server overload. However the last 2 mornings Australian time 8am - 12 noon I have had not 1 issue with with the playability of the game and had great fun doing so. However my main playtime most days is anywhere from 5pm to 2 am AEST The game is unplayable and I am just about at the point of giving it away. My rational leads me to believe the problem is not at my end else I would not be able to play in a morning would I? I would appreciate an explanation as other mmos cause me no problem.

Cycling lag problems usually is an indication of traffic shapping by the ISP or one of it's routing partners. They change the type and amount of filtering during peak times and reduce it during slow times.

    run the tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com

and the nettest both during the time you don't have problems and when you do and post all the results.

Using a cryptic proxy EU server helped. I observed that I was having a lot less "lag" during 3am and 7am (GMT+1, UTC 1am-5am), wich are low peak hours. I did see more and more people talking and having problems in fleet now, that live in completely different parts of the world, that are experiencing one or the other form of connection problems (rubber banding, dc'ing). Could be different causes, coincidal perhaps. Have it on my kling now too. But less with a proxy, havent done any more testing (more times a day, log network data bla bla). So it could be nothing and pass like the wind.

Still getting some weird DC's, fleet mates are getting them too, and they live on the other side of the universe. When we team, when we solo, not beginning to see any patterns.. yet. But it sure is weird this has only be happening since last week, and its not just me. Proxy or not. Klingon side, and fed side. Any ideas anyone? It may not be the game servers, but maybe its some other part of the network somewhere.

There were some hicups this morning, but they should have been cleared up by now. Are you still having these issues?

No more issues connecting normally without using proxy. I was having some trouble with the proxy now tho, random and suddon disconnects. Things are happening the other way around. But thats fine, the game works, without using any "tricks".

    Thankyou!

I am on Shaw Cable internet, connecting wirelessly (for the next week or so) wirelessly through a Linksys WRT610n router. My system never gets a real load on it even in game with the following spec:

    Core I7 860 2.8ghz quad core
    4gb DDR3 1333mhz
    AMD 5850 1gb @ 1680x1050
    2x 1tb hard drives
all system temps are kept below 40degrees other than video and it maintains expected temps. I have played WOW without ever running into any lag issues, as well as many other multiplayer games. I am at a loss for what to do.

you are having some problems on ports and shaw does traffic manage but I believe you problem may be your wireless. The game does not work well on wireless connections and vista and win 7 scan the wireless connection every 60 seconds and on some routers this can cause lag and disconnects.
if you can not connect directly to router and you use vista or win7 you can try

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1380507 this is for vista not sure if the same will work on win7

or use the program for vista and win7 (though I have not used the program heard it worked for some)

I do use Windows 7 64bit but trying with one or both of the above suggestions does not make a difference. I still get regular rubberbanding, especially bad on ground missions but in space as well. It gets very annoying when you fly around in a fight for some time unable to fire but still appearing to take damage and then suddenly having the ship bouncing back and forth for several seconds and no ships are where they were a second ago.

:( I have tried playing at various times (1am, 6am, 12pm, 5pm, 9pm all PST) and no change on the amount of lag or bouncing.

I thank you for the suggestions above and had really hoped one or both would work. If there are any other suggestions, I am more than willing to listen. Thanks in advance.

Can you do me a favor and post a DXDIAG?

To create a DXDiag report, follow these steps:

    1. Click "Start" menu, then click "Run"
    2. In the "Open" box, type: DXDiag (hit enter)
    3. If this is your first time running DXDiag, click "Yes" to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
    4. Click "Save All Information" to create a DXDiag report.
    5. Choose a name and location for the dump file (recommend desktop) and click "Save".

I have tried to upload a dxdiag report but the system refuses the file saying at the top of the screen that the file is invalid. it is a standard ZIP file made from 7zip at default settings and is readily readable on other computers.

I have also changed to a direct connection to the switch instead of through the wireless and the problem is no better. All last night till the server was taken down as well as this morning and afternoon I have played with constant lag issues. at one point in battle, I had over 45 seconds where I did no damage and saw constant damage being taken on my ship with nothing happening. Immediately after that 45 seconds, there was a massive amount of jumping around on the screen with both my ship and the enemies ships moving all over the place and one ship was destroyed. it is not quite a regularly occuring thing but the lag is always there. I can play for no more than 8 minutes or so without a fairly major case of rubberbanding.

I have also been running the nettest regularly the results appear variable, here is the last test I ran:

I have just tried recreating the zip and dxdiag files to see if that would fix the upload but it remains an invalid file. If there is a workaround you can suggest to this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

I also tried using speedtest.net to check my connection and tried going to the Boston site to see if that was a problem. My test came back as this: 866027702.png which admittedly shows my download being a little over a third of what it should be from Shaw (15mb down). Testing from a closer server gets me this result: 866042295.png

:) I have tried the basic trouble shooting, shutting down the comp and restarting, rebooting the router and the cable box. I have also made sure there was no downloading or torrenting happening on the conneciton for any of the comps in the house.

Just attach the txt file I have made changes to allow larger dxdiag files. Speed test does test how quick your connection is, but not the stability of your connection or paths that your ISP routes your signal to our servers. Can you post the results of the trace route?

You can make sure that the ports on your firewall are open to outbound TCP traffic on ports 7000-7499. Have you tried the proxy option in the launcher?

Also are you using a wireless connection. Since it is random on the ports timing out it could be
your wireless connection is losing connection, or if you are using vista or win 7 , it's normal rescanning of the wireless connections every 60 seconds is affecting it.
baring that it may be random filtering scan on the ports by your ISP.

Initially when I started playing, I was using the wireless while waiting for a network run to be finished up. as of last week, I am running on a wired connection and the wireless software is removed and the wireless autoconfig is not started.

My ISP could be the problem, but it hasn't been for any other game I have played. They do play network traffic management games and that I can't get around.

As things stand right now, I set it to use the US proxy and the problem seemed greatly diminished, all the way to playable on ground missions but after about 2.5 hrs, it crashed hard and took half an hour to send the crash report. I will let you know how things continue going.

    Has anyone found a solution?

Can you provide us with the diagnostic information? We are looking for a nettest, trace route, and a dxdiag!

Looks like you are playing from outside of the US. I would recommend you try the EU proxy option in the launcher, but keep in mind that it may not solve the issue. Your latency is starting to be on the high end so there might not be anything you can do to correct this.

i have no serious lag (just a tiny little bit, if i fly in formation with someone else or an NPC the other one is allways jumping just a few pixels forth and back).

    But that i have "0 KB/sec 0 KB/sec " everywhere kind of concerns me...

i forwaded the following Ports in my FritzBox allready

    Star Trek Online TCP 443 192.168.178.20 443
    Star Trek Online TCP 7000-7004 192.168.178.20 7000-7004
    Star Trek Online TCP 7255 192.168.178.20 7255
    Star Trek Online TCP 7499 192.168.178.20 7499
    Star Trek Online TCP 7202 192.168.178.20 7202
    Star Trek Online TCP 7224 192.168.178.20 7224
    Star Trek Online TCP 7399 192.168.178.20 7399

no firewall is installed on my PC, Windows 7 Firewall is deactivated as far as i can tell

    any ideas?
