since you are using Win 7 which directory do you have the game installed? If it is the program files directory, I would reinstall the game in a different directory.

Since it keeps happening the nice thing I would do is an extensive check of the memory and hard drive to be sure niether of them are failing.
(hard drive eeror coupld also happen if you have a weak or over worked power supply)

This is the same issue i am getting in my thread listed a a couple above this one. It seems like a lot of people are getting this, but that cryptic refuses to admit it as an issue and is trying rather hardly not to deal with it....

    i don't get it.....

We can only tell you what the error dumps come back with. If the error says it's a hardware related issue and then a seasoned programmer confirms this, then this is what we can do for the moment. PegasusMD dose typically have some good suggestions for high level diagnostic tools, but since none of them are Cryptic's I cannot recommend them. I will continue to ask around about this but for the time investigating this further is the best course of action.

Writing on bad sector blocks on a hard drive will cause these issues when later trying to read from them.

HD Tune is your friend! HD Tach is a good second opinion.

    Good!

When you say corrupted, are you unable to launch the game? Does it die when loading?

Queen_MAB has another thread and in there, she (he? sorry no idea), ran memtest86+ and found strong evidence the memory in (their) system was bad.

    You could try that?

I was having the same problem and I fixed it. here was my problem. I have dual ATI Radion cards. STO has a problem with ATI cards if you turn on dynamic lighting. The fix is just turn it off.

    Hope this helps.

dont have an ATI card, and it just randomly crashes anywhere in the game, sometimes takes an hour , sometimes 10 min its pretty random and weird, im using a Geforce 8800 GT, but ill try putting off Dynamic Lightning :) lets see if it helps.

Sure that was the first thing i checked, but it a new computer !! anyway notting is wrong all works. but game keeps crashing !! i blame Win7

yep i have the same problem its totaly random, somtimes i can play days and other time i need to reinstall the files every 15-30mins. i'm 100% sure its NOT my computer or hardware, it might be windows 7 that foks this up.
ohwell i have a "fix" wel its not a fix but more a patch/repair trick ^^ simply rar/zip the folder and wen one of the files errors replace it with the file from the rar/zip it takes a fraction of the time then to wait to redownload, then wen you start the launcher make sure you put out the "v" infront of "force check" in options and voila you can play again minutes after the error :p i know its not the way it needs to be but at least its a fast repair tip.

ps: the force check is not working if you ask me cus wen you don't delete the file that has the error the check don't even find or replaces the file lol, imo the "force check" is a joke ! even more somone toled me the files that give the error are som what temp files Oo like what the F the game won't even start if a temp file is corrupt ... i"m not sure if it is a temp file but if it is "LAME".

If it only seems to happen when running Star Trek Online and not other times, it could an issue with the heat the graphics card is generating. I would recommend making sure all the fans in the computer are working, any grill is free, at least a couple inches between the grill and any obstruction (desk, wall, etc.). Make sure any cables inside the case are not blocking airflow, most cases now are designed for air to flow in certain patterns inside the cases for better cooling. Also, if you're motherboard supports it, find a program to display the temperatures while the game is running.

It could also be a power issue, if your power supply is not big enough, or getting older and not putting out the same level of power, the extra juice needed by the card to run a game like Star Trek Online could be causing other devices to lose the voltage they need to run properly. You might want to use a power supply tester or volt meter to see if the power supply is working ok.

Another problem that could cause random file errors would be disk fragmentation. If your disk is highly fragmented, Windows can have trouble writing all the information correctly with all the drive seeking required. I have seen numerous instances where files (including vital boot files) were corrupted beyond repair because of fragmented hard drives.

Overall, I would guess it is the heat issue. If your hard drive, motherboard, memory or CPU are bad, the errors may only get bad enough to notice when the heat inside the case is increased beyond a certain point. You can try running Star Trek Online with low graphics settings. This will keep the graphics card running cooler and might help determine if the heat is a factor in the errors you are getting with the files.
