Sorry to say it, but i think most "reports" are deserved. Sure there can be some bad looser doing it on purpose, but from my experience, those big mouthed rude people, deserve it.
If the rules say no bad language, then that applies to you too. Simply being a L337 PvPer doesn't make you a special snowflake that is allowed to ignore the rules.
If I am in a pre-made, zone is never visible unless it is for a GG at the end of the game or a brief "All your bases are belong to us"
Otherwise I tend to have zone inactive as soon as the PUG is established (i.e. I am watching a separate team tab) as I see little point in reading the juvenile nerd rages and sub-literate gibberish that are so common in PvP zone chat.
Why bother reporting a jackass for being a jackass when it is so easy to blank them out? It seems hardly worth the effort. Of course if someone is doing abusive tells, then sure, /ignore and then report them.
I'm not sure why Cryptic would address bad language provided the offender didn't go around the language filter.
If you don't want bad language keep the chat filter ENABLED.
Otherwise don't QQ about it.
Exactly...Cryptic gave you the tool to block all offensive language. If you decide not to enable it then anything you see and hear is partially your own fault. It's like tuning in to Cinemax or HBO at 3 a.m. and then being shocked to see a breast exposed...
Every sane person should be. I'm playing a game for my amusement not to read morronic people insulting me or others with rude gibberish. Now personally I don't care when people use foul language in global, but I can fully understand others that do and report them.
in pvp where you are fighting, people cuss and say nutty things,
but hey, i thought that was part of gameing,
i can reaport people no sweat,
but won't it be bad for the game ?
Those are not people, they are a more primitive ape-like creature posing for us and without any sense of self-control. There is no other explanation for certain MMO player behaviour or most youtube comments. In any case it most definately is not a wanted part of gaming.
anyway like i said bating harassment wile mean and wrong , is part of our game here has been sence i stared pvping,
mostly at first it was a normal, name calling and 4 letter word stuff,
but like i said, baiting players and harassing them to the point of tells and then ignor happens alot in pvp, why people would on top of that report you to is nutty,
i guess if at least pvp is going to all care bear from here on in i will reaport people,
God forbid people just grow up and act in a responsible way, whether they pvp or not.
Yes I am. That's what the report function is there for.
The entire idea of "no one likes a rat" is something that was started and is primarily upheld by schoolyard bullies, criminals and prison inmates. Those types of people don't like it when people snitch on them because they want to continue victimizing people. So they actively discourage people from snitching on them by supporting that childish idea of "you shouldn't rat on people."
I have no problem with it if that's the kind of person that you want to be. I just want you to know the kind of people that you're deliberately choosing to be like.
No it's not. You know what it is? It's a perfect example of "I'm safe on the internet syndrome."
I'm not a particularly big man, but no one talks to me in real life the way they do in many PvP games. You know why? Because they don't know me, and there's always that chance that I'll break their head open.
That's the reason why immature people talk smack anywhere online. Because they can. Because they don't dare walk down the street and talk to people like that in real life, cause they'd end up in a chalk outline somewhere. But on the internet they can! On the internet they're 9 foot tall and bulletproof. Because neither you nor I can reach through that screen and slap the marbles out the side of their head.
If you refuse to use these things, and people aren't circumventing them, you have no right to complain.
Given how easy it is to block people (kudos Cryptic for that aspect of the fairly crummy UI at least), I do not usually see the *point* of complaining about mere language.
If someone wants to make themselves look like a school yard jackass in zone, I am usually inclined to just /ignore and let them get on with making themselves look like a twit... but certainly people have the *right* to complain if someone is an anti-social boor.
That's kind of a no-brainer. It stops where the swearing ends. It's not like you're going to get anywhere reporting people for *not* swearing.
By the way, that filter to block language is not a doorway to the swear-zone. It's there as an added layer of protection, not as a way to get around the core rules:
In-Game Chat May Not Contain:
Language which may be considered offensive to any real-world demographics, including race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, and ethnicity
Reference to extreme or violent sexual acts
Profanity or inappropriate language
References to participation in illegal real world activities (i.e. drugs, violence)
Advertisements for real-world products or websites
Spamming
Real life information regarding another user (address, phone number, real name, etc)
Intent to scam another player
Are these terms really that hard to follow? Is it that difficult to get your point across without dropping an F-bomb?
That said, I rarely see people saying anything more in PvP beyond "gg", much less swearing.

Heh, true internet badass talk at its best!
If you cannot use the language filter or the ignore button...
Reporting looks like it is the least of the issues that should be addressed here.
I have no opinion on the report issue, but quite honestly I think most people start talking in zone chat during PvP for the sole purpose of proving how stupid they are.
I played 20 PvP matches yesterday and the only thing they had in common is that in every single match - including a match where Section 31 beat my side badly - one or more players on the Fed team whined and complained about something.
It would be healthier for the PvP community of STO to have more rivalries and more flame wars that fanned the flames of competition than what we current have - a large community of complainers and crybabys - both on the forums and in game.
that was a nice post, but i do wonder if you ever play pvp in this game, and im sorry you may be right with all the rules there and such but that hardy what happens in pvp in this game, i have no less then at least 75 or more people on ignor from my 4 player chr's, and maybe 13 or 16 are for spamming my email box for gold sellers,
the rest sence beta are for harassment of me or other players, there is and has been a ton of
rule brakers in the pvp of this game, wich i mite add is worse then playing shadowbane, wich
let anything happen all the time forever.
so ya i just wonder if some of you are paying the same STO that i am.
I think it depends on where you're PvP'ing. Space capture and hold, I rarely see any negative chatter, although there are always exceptions. The Ker'rat system where Klingon player's start each match parked 10 feet behind the Fed spawn point and open up their cannons the moment the match begins.. yeah, there's a lot of swearing.

I have to agree with my esteemed colleague

In my experience 'flame wars' (exchanges of insults) generate nothing useful whatsoever other than helpfully showing who needs to be put on /ignore.

Just one thing.. When the game starts, I'm in the same pile as everyone else at Kar'rat..
Goes to a cut image.. bam bam, then I see the game. I haven't been able to start where I wanted, unless I moved to the edle of map and space turned blue.
Star Trek Online is a PEGI12+ game. Anyone who plays this game has agreed to behave in a way that does not jeopardise this rating. So if you swear and cuss in zone chat you are in the wrong. And if you get reported you deserve whatever punishment you get.
Cussing in a very public zone will always result in a complaint by me. In a PvP zone you would have to accuse me of having sex with my maternal parent before I would reach for the complain button.
Its never occured to me to report someone for swearing, much less that cryptic would punish someone for saying something that was already censored by the profanity filter (speaking of, if swearing is against the TOS, why can the filter be turned off?), what a waste of time and energy this issue is. I truly cant imagine what would possess a person to go running to the "the authorities" to complain that someone said a bad word.. especially when you have so many tools at your disposal to handle it yourself. Sad.
